whats wrong with live concerts these days...

When I was 16, moshing and pushing your way to the front was part of the deal - an expectancy if you will. Beer was spilled and we didn't care, but now, I just don't know....
Oh wait, I do. People keep getting killed at shows for being too drunk, too aggressive, too doped up, or too violent. Give me a seat in a massive venue where I can see the band any day, ensure my safety and still enjoy one hell of a show.
It's not what's wrong with shows, it's what's wrong with the people that go to them and ruin it for the rest of us who can handle GA attendance and not be idiots.1998: Barrie 2000: Toronto 2005: Kitchener, London, Hamilton, Toronto 2006: Toronto 1&2, Paris, Milan, Torino, Pistoia 2009: Calgary, Vancouver 2011: Canada 2013: London, Wrigley, Philly 1&2 2014: St. Louis, ACL 1, Detroit 2016: Lexington, Quebec, Ottawa, Toronto 1&2, Fenway 1&2, Wrigley 1&2 2017: EV - Louisville 2018: London 1&2, Milan, Padova, Rome, Prague, Krakow, Berlin, Wrigley 1&2, Fenway 1&2 2020: Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton 2021: London 1&2 2022: Hamilton, Toronto 2023: Chicago 1&2, Noblesville 2024: Seattle 1&2, Noblesville, Wrigley 1&20 -
I've been in my share of "mosh pits" as well and i will take a seat any day. i agree. personally i dont wade into the moshpit that much, it depends on the crowd. though i do like to get as close as i can without being sucked into the vortex. the reason is cause im claustrophobic and after awhile i get anxious and cant breath. i also like to drink and you cant do that in the pit. so more often than not i stand back where i can watch the guys and girls go nuts. and yeah i wish i was down there among them. but i get a kick out of watching them go wild. must be the anthropologist in me.hear my name

I have seen Toadies multiple times, one of my favorite bands, but at all GA only shows the crowd just does not behave reasonably. :(
DO NOT PASS ON THE TOADIES.
I saw them 2x recently at small New York GA venues (Webster Hall and Bowery Ballroom)
The crowd was well behaved and the shows rocked. Minimal moshing, mostly just bouncing and fist pumping.
At the last one, (Webster) I was concerned because I am pregnant, and I didn't wanna have to hang in the back the whole time.... I found a nice big block to sit on (An unused speaker, perhaps, about 6 feet high), 8 feet from the stage with a perfect view of the band and the crowd. (Right on Clark's side!)
i repeat, do NOT pass on the Toadies!!!"Find myself singing the same songs every day....
ones that make me feel good when things behind the smile ain't ok...." -Hoon0 -
moshing is fun when you're 15... not so much afterwards.
I don't want to stand there with my arms folded, but I don't want some fucking prick hitting me from behind. Quick way to get my foot planted up your assholeHello, I love you. Won't you tell me your name?0 -
Screaming drunken nonsence. "I love you Eddie" "Go Cubbies" "Yellow Ledbetter" (during the 1st song of the night) "Pardon me, can my friend sit here". This all sucks.

Yeah, the Toadies got back together and just put out a new album called "no deliverance" back in August.
I have met the band several times (Todd has even given me Backstage passes to a few shows).
The first time I saw them was a one off reunion in Dallas for the St. Patricks day parade back in 2006. That was the worst pit ever. I only lasted 5 songs front row on the rail and had to get out, and trying to get through that drunken fueled pit was a night mare.
I love the Toadies, I just don't like seeing them in a standing room only environment becuse the crowds do not behave and people start fights. When they play Verizon wireless, I can get a seat, but the last 3 shows they played there I got VIP area seats / backstage pass with their working crew and management.
I'll probably go, I just hope the crowd behaves. I have heard as of recently the Toadies have been addressing the crowd to rock out but be nice and respect each other which has toned the behavior down some. I hope that's true. I am just scared shitless of pits cause I am not very big, and I literally thought I was gonna die/ pass out at the first Toadies show. The new album is awesome, you should check it out, if you get the chance.PJ: 10/14/00 06/09/03 10/4/09 11/15/13 11/16/13 10/08/14

I was just at a Bob Dylan show in NYC last week and there was a guy who was unbelievably intoxicated coming up the aisle of the orchestra. I was in the back of the orch, he was coming from WAY up front (lucky bum!). As he's making his way towards the back, we're all standing and dancing and he's shouting, "Why is everyone standing up back here?!" My best guess is because we weren't falling down drunk like he was.....
I think it's lame when people go and just sit down (acoustic shows excluded). Go home and put on a dvd for that....Why go home?0 -
as "principal vedder" said at Borgata, "its called growing up"
i realized my moshing days were behind me when i saw a dude get a bloody lip during a goo goo dolls show.those undecided, needn't have faith to be free0 -
when moshing first came about it wasnt what it became with the body smashing...moshing used to be a huge group in unison going around in a circle dancing around and having a good time...then some idiots decided to evolve it into smashing into each other which caused alot of injuries and fights
i used to mosh back in the day then it turned into what it is now and i have no part of it now..i would rather just sit back and enjoy the show from afar if thats the case0 -
I miss the days when you could get a contact high from just being at a show. The good old 70's when seeing bands like Pink Floyd, Allman Brothers, Deep Purple, Robin Trower, etc. was a stone party where everyone just kind of swayed the same way because they were all buzzed on something good.0
-
Just cause its general admission doesn't mean theres moshing. The last couple shows I saw in clubs (North Mississippi Allstars and Flobots) either didnt have a pit or had a small one that wasn't all that violent. I'd say the real shame is that Pearl Jam isn't going to get to do GA venues for a long time if ever. I was so dissappointed to have my first pearl jam show in an arena, awful way to experience a band live (granted the show was absolutely awesome, but I still would have rather had standing room in front of the band, not the lame fold out chairs)0

Ive been in pits where everyone respects each other and there is enough room that your not struggling to breath and those are great! You dont have to worry about surviving. And then ive been in other mosh pits like RATM (yeah i should have seen it coming) where i got totally slammed and it took alot of the joy out of the show. I love going to a pearl jam show and having my own space that i dont have to fight to keep and i can just enjoy the music. I dont think there would ever be a "calm" pit at a pearl jam show so ill take the seats everytime.
But yeah i do not understand why you would go to a rock concert and sit down...that is beyond me. I wish those people wouldnt even turn up.www.myspace.com/allmankind0 -
Go to a Manu Chao concert! That will tire you out so muchA child's rhyme stuck in my head...

That still happens at plenty of the good punk shows (Rancid, Tiger Army, Street Dogs....). I'm a little old now to be IN it, but I love to see it and be near it.R.i.p. Rigoberto Alpizar.

What happenned to the good old days, hardcore shows, people flying around being carried, etc. Turns out you cant even have a beer in the parking lot in most venues without someone coming to bust ya...
Dont you miss that sometimes?
Thank Big Government for that.0 -
i didnt even bother to read the 3 pages of responses but i want to say to the OP...
...youre going to the wrong shows and seeing the wrong bands in the wrong arenas...I shit and I stink, I'm real, join the club...0 -

I don't know what shitty shows you guys have been to, but every show I have ever attended, me and everyone in sight is standing, singing, dancing, jumping and just feeling the music. I've been to a couple thrash metal shows with some of my thrasher friends before, and that's not fun at all. Getting elbowed in the head, tripped to the ground and stomped on is not a fun time. Then trying to get up and out with a bloody face a throbbing head while being stomped on and kicked is not a good at all. I will never mosh again haha.Nathan0
