Can we all now admit....

Has enough time passed now for us all to come together and admit the fact that Backspacer was just awful! Yeah, most of us were in denial just because it was a new Pearl Jam studio album and at that point we would accept anything new - but come on guys! Compared to everything else its well below par! I cant actually think any time in the past 2 yrs that I thought to myself "I could really listen to Backspacer right now!"

Come on - just admit it and we can all move on...

If Ole and Of the Earth are anything to judge by, my hopes are not too high for the next album...

It kills me to write this by the way!

not at all.....still enjoy it to this day.

Its ok to dislike it though, and you shouldnt hide it. Im not overly fond of Riot Act, i wouldnt say its awful but its easily my least fave PJ record and I rarely reach for it. Thats just me though, there are people here who love it and that is the beauty of music.

I have very high hopes for the new album, in fact i cant wait

As a whole, I think Backspacer is OK. There are some very good songs like Unthought Known, Amongst the Waves, Force of Nature, and The End. Some OK songs like Got Some, The Fixer, Johnny Guitar, Supersonic, and Just Breathe. Then some bad ones like Speed of Sound and Gonna See my Friend.

I enjoyed Backspacer a lot. If I had any complaint, it's that it was too short of an album with only 11 tracks. A copule of the tracks were hit and miss (Johnny Guitar is one), but it has a lot of songs I quickly fell in love with (Force of Nature, The End, Unthought Known).

Ole I can take or leave, but I love Of the Earth ... it feels like a classic, rockin' PJ song. I really hope they release it as a single or on the next album ... or start playing it live at shows I attend.

Sorry I don't agree with you. :nono:

Avacado (S/T) is equally as bad if not worse.

I could not disgaree more! I know it is cool to dis Backspacer, but jeez, how about some respect and gratitude to a buncha guys who are not content on rehashing the same product every year. Do we really need "Alive Part II" or "(Still)Black"? It is no longer 1992, this band is now 20 years older, and if my math is correct, we also should be 2 decades older. I have applauded and enjoyed every album, soundtrack or single PJ has done, and I can't wait to see what direction the next record goes.

I am a fan of PEARL JAM, not just one or two albums from the early 90s.

    Rant over. ;)

I like Backspacer but feel that some of the songs should have ended up on an Eddie solo album (Just Breathe, The End, Speed of Sound).

I thought it was their most consistently good album in ages. Not a track on there I dislike.
And I planted my bolo knife in the neck of mad John Finn. I took his wretched life.
Now I'm over near the bandstand, every hand moving on John Finn's wife...

Of The Earth is way better then anything on Backspacer! Is probably in my top 10 songs of theirs and I hope they play it at Wrigley! I don't expect it to be on the next record cause I remember someone in the band saying they worked on it during Backspacer sessions but Brendan didn't like it. I think Backspacer is over produced and too poppy! Especially Speed Of Sound! Brendan ruined that song! Ed's demo of it was perfect and should have been left alone.

Why would someone who doesn't like anything the band has released in seven years waste time posting on the band's message board?

BS was great. I don't get what people want from Pearl Jam. They are growing and changing. I love Vs, its the best LP of all time. Would I want a Vs 2? No fucking way. BS stands alone as a great record in their history.

No one can tell me what I can or cannot like, I have a freedom and free will , and I am not in denial when I write this; Backspacer is an awesome album!
It may not be my all-time favourite Pearl Jam album, but it's definitely not my least favourite. As for Ole and Of the Earth both songs I'll admit are an acquired taste, fortunately for me I have very good taste and enjoy both those songs. So bring on the new album, preferably sooner than later. :ugeek:

I actually really like S/T. Not a fan of Backspacer at all apart for a song or two but I'm still holding out for a return to form in the next one. I know a lot of people see Backspacer as some sort of progression but I think it was a step back in some ways. As the band (and myself) is getting older, I would love more depth, not less. That's what made me fall in love with this band in the first place. Backspacer just has no emotional resonance for me. I wonder how many people would "love" it if another band's name was on it?
