Silversun Pickups rocked the Mondavi Center in Davis, CA last night. Lot of songs off the latest album, Neck of the Woods, filled out the 1.5 hour set with a lot from Swoon, maybe 1 from Carnavas? Boy, that bass player is waaaay preggers, I worry about those kids tomorrow night in Oakland! (lots of people with bad, bad cases of Glaucoma! hehehe...)
Panic Switch was fantastic highlight, but the encore was an equal match, first time they played one of the new songs on tour, Busy Bees, and then they just took requests and absolutely killed Out of Breath.
Great set, first opener Genius Atlas from australia were solid, daughter is googlin/iTune'n 'em. Next act was hoooorible, admittedly, their monitors weren't working, but overly layered textured synth/guitar crap, way self-indulgent. A peek at how that thick SP sound can go tragically wrong!
And sound was a bad problem all night, as beautiful and easy to get to as the Mondavi Center at UC Davis is, they have no clue how to host a rock show. The PA was hung about 5' from the 70' ceiling, so it all just went over our heads -- all we heard was the direct sound from the drum kit and the bass amp on the stage -- all the guitar, vocal and keyboards were lost. hella quiet too.
Mighta sounded fine in the balcony -- which was closed, we all packed into the front third of the place. Well a Monday night, but I expected SP to pull a bit bigger crowd. We'll see how Oakland does![sic] happens0 -
I saw them open for Pearl Jam at the Outside Lands Festival in 2009 in San Fran. I was front row. The drummer is unbelievably entertaining. I love his styleRyan Crooks insists upon himself0

yep! THat's where I first ran across 'em too -- but Built to Spill kicked my ass waaaaaay more that day! The daughter picked up on SP. That's why we always check out openers![sic] happens0

This album keeps getting better and better every time I listen to it.Alright, alright, alright!

missed them 2 times now in my town. But yeah the drummer is intense. Still have never seen another drummer with their crash that high up, its like he has to stand up to hit it0 -

What a difference a venue makes!!!
The Fox Theater has just got it goin' on! Certainly a Weds night in Oakland is always gonna kick ass over a Monday in Davis -- and last night was no exception. Place was just shy of sold out and the energy level was orders of magnitude higher (in every sense of that word)...
Even the fantastically horrible opener was passable -- because now we were hearing ALL the instruments and tracks and vocals all mixed together as they should be. Still just stunned by the Mondavi Center hanging the PA 75' over our heads -- rock is made to be in your face! And the Fox cranks it up, nice and loud!
Where maybe 1-2 rows in front at Davis were pumped, the whole lower level we could see from the balcony was rocking, and the band totally fed off that -- just validates what we know so well, bands feed off a crowd's energy.
Bummer in that Brian's guitar glitched and was out for 10 minutes, he first called for a drum solo while techs swarmed his pedal board and amps, then they played a number sans guitar, but he put in a bit of air guitar! Was hoping we'd get a few more encores for that, but nope, curfews and what not, house lights popped on at 11 sharp.
Pretty identical sets of course, cept the drum solo and guitarless song. Encore was explosive! Closed the show with Out of Breath (Neck of the Woods) and Well Thought Out Twinkles (Carnavas).
Looking forward to enjoying this band for many, many more years![sic] happens0 -
Huh, I'm looking over the two shows (Davis and Oakland) same amount of time, 90 mins, but I think even with the guitar going out for 12 minutes in Oakland, they played more songs! THAT'S a quality recovery!
And we got a 7 min acapella version of Three Seed, just drums and bass, while they fixed the guitar rig. Don't think the keyboardist was ready for it...
CATCH 'EM ON TOUR, great act -- and I bet they drop outta sight for awhile once those babies come, so....[sic] happens0 -
