And all I said about the people in attendance is that the majority will likely not be more than casual PJ fans (no disputing this)....and that they either won't be paying, or money will be no object. I'm sure there will be some very well-off people there. Probably more 'millionaires' than your average concertference....it's the Tech industry, afterall...and I'm sure some people are going for business purposes. But I would be willing to wager that most of the courses/workshops/seminars being offered could be found for a lot less money or closer to home....I'm guessing that a lot of the people there will be people who were able to 'greenlight' the trip themselves, or deserving of some kind of perk.
I always love the whole "I'm business networking" line of bullshit that upper management types love to give. I hear this all the time about those golf course meetings, strip club expense claims, liquid lunches, etc.....yes, there is a business aspect to all of that, but don't try to convince me that the actual POINT to going golfing was businessYou'd get your business done a lot more efficiently in an office. Just admit it - you're building personal relationships while pretending to work. And that's ok too...just don't try to bullshit me about it, ya know?
No, I was not specifically talking about you, more of talking about some general themes from this thread.
You are correct, not everyone in attendance loves Pearl Jam like the people on this board. I personally do not care if the person I am sitting next to is rich or struggling to make ends meat, I am there to see a concert, not to look at the watches they are wearing.
This conference is an annual event, and while a course/class may be available in a local market, the pure scale of options for the attendees is not available anywhere else, full stop. I personally build agendas for the customers that I am responsible for, and I can say that they do take it seriously. They attendee break out sessions, demonstrations, network with other users, and seek out partners that can help them with their day-to-day activities, while managing there workload at home. Do they have fun, too, yes. I went to dinner with my customers, spent some time on a Harbor tour, and I went to the concert with them. We had fun and I built a better relationship with them while I was out there than I had in their office environment. Do people do other things, sure, but they do those things anyway. You just need to realize and understand that building relationships is part of many people's jobs, and those that are effective at building relationships are more successful at what they do.0 -

Do those fuckers even go to concerts? I mean, they'd have to mix with the plebs then.
Not that that is the point of this thread, lol. Pearl Jam... don't play any more corporate gigs please. Can't you see what it's doing to us?!?!  :shock:With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0 -

It always drops my opinion of the band. Leave those shows to the Black Eyed Peas and Justin Beiber, even Elton John. But Pearl Jam....my heart breaks.0

If we’re going to look at PJ as a business (and not as the group of artists they forever wanted us to view them as), we can analyze their actions using capitalist terms: risk/reward.
Out of all of the things people have called PJ a sellout for: YL on Friends, the Target stuff, Ed marrying models, playing CEO bday parties, attending black-tie circle jerks, making videos, ticket prices, meet n greets, etc….this is the first time I just can’t justify the optics to myself….I don’t like the end result of examining the risk/reward of the Oracle gig.
Nearly every sellout accusation against PJ can be justified as the band looking to stay relevant via increased marketing (Target), personal favours (bday party, possibly YL), changing music biz (ticket prices), or none-of-our-damn-business (who Ed married). At least with the Target gig, with the risk being fan backlash, there was a reward in the business relationship that allowed them wide, hassle-free distribution….which benefits fans and exposes the band to potential new fans. And they HAVE to KNOW there is going to be a backlash, after their decades of preaching against the man…….With this gig…the risk is the same (fan backlash)…but the only reward I see is a big payday. Maybe there is a personal favour angle or something....but even so, at face value, I can't see a reward that justifies the risk. There is no benefit to anyone but Oracle, a few employees who are fans, and PJ’s wallet. So reading between the lines, it’s a selfish act that they KNOW will tarnish their image and piss off a lot of their long-time fans…and they don’t give a shit. Fuck ‘em, right? They’ll get over it, right? I dunno….
I’ve never looked at Chris Cornell the same since he cancelled a show to play for some jeans company execs. I still listen to him and support him….but I lost a TON of respect for him from an integrity standpoint. At least PJ didn’t cancel on their fans to do this show instead. That would be damn near unforgiveable. Wait, when was that second night in Missoula supposed to happen? I’m pretty disappointed by this. No fuckin Messiah indeed.k, that was more like $20 -

do you know what inflation means? $20 for a show 15 YEARS AGO is the same as $80 for a show now. I have paid way more for bands that are inferior to Pearl Jam over the years. And none of those bands play for nearly 3 hours and play 30 songs.
NONE.
Um...$20 in 1994 (when I first saw them) is equal to just under $31 in today's dollars.

ding ding ding!!! isnt it funny how actual facts get overlooked so easily nowadays?0 -

Yo, band members and band management... and some of you "grab the money and run" fans of the band...
i will cut right through the thick of it... no matter how big of a payday it is... even if they were the best corporation EVER and rainbows shot out of Larry Ellisons ass that cured cancer...
playing a business conference is fucking LAME... and you know it...
wtf happened to your balls?0 -
and if any of you need proof of this statement above... why do you think there will be no official mention of this "show", or any listing of it under a tour or setlist index?
because they know it's weak0
