    Hey all.

I had the chance to interview Tim Reynolds this afternoon as he will be in my newspaper's area (St. Charles, Ill.) on April 17. Some tidbits about the new album:

"We just got done working on [the new album] – the first two months this of the year. Lillywhite is a great producer and a great person to work with. I think people are going to be really happy with it. It's got a sweet feel-good kind of thing."

    • • •

"I think for most of the part, Dave came in with pretty fleshed out ideas. Each new day everyone kind of learns that song and then we record it and play it."

    • • •

"If [Lillywhite] is looking for a certain kind of guitar chord, he'll yell out a certain guitar player. On one song he was like, 'Pink Floyd,' and then I did that and it was great fun to work like that."

    • ••

"The music is all done but some of the lyrics and mixing is still to be done."

    • • •

And for good measure, about taking her daughter to the Grammy's after he was nominated for "Kundalini Bonfire":

"I really wanted to take my daughter to experience it because she loves Katy Perry. We've also gone to see two Katy Perry's concerts. She's a great performer and a ridiculous singer and I see why she's where she is."

    ---

I'll have the full interview transcribed later this week. He didn't elaborate a ton on the DMB stuff, obviously. He also said in passing that it probably won't come out "that" soon.

Also - has anyone heard any rumours of any UK/Euro dates? - I couldn't make their last concerts here as it clashed with a holiday

Jimmy Fallon tweeted that Dave will be playing a 'beautiful song off the new album!' Awesome news! Could see it maybe being Sweet, though, the song Dave has played on the uke a few times since 2011 about his son learning to swim...we'll see! Hopefully Dave does another skit with Jimmy, the Dave Matthews GPS was hysterical! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDaxjEu-Qck

Dave Matthews Band new album 2012: What we know so far

Thanks to the Dave Matthews Band new album, 2012 will be an exciting year for DMB fans.

DMB has been exceptionally tight-lipped about the new album, but some information has come out here and there. This list features all the confirmed details we have so far.

We’ll update this list with more Dave Matthews Band new album information as it becomes available, so check back often.

Dave Matthews Band new album 2012 details

DMB entered a Seattle studio in early January with producer Steve Lillywhite. The band played the songs live, Lillywhite took drum recordings from those performances, and then the band members re-recorded their parts over those drum tracks. It only took six hours to record all of the horn parts for the new DMB album.

In late April, Stefan tweeted that Dave Matthews Band’s new album would probably be released in late summer or early fall, but soon afterwards, he deleted that tweet.

The only song confirmed for the new album is “Mercy,” which Dave Matthews performed on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in April. That slow, acoustic version was not like the album recording, which Lillywhite said is “not just acoustic” and “not quiet.”

The new album is “about 55 minutes” long, according to Lillywhite, with somewhere between 11 and 15 tracks. The shortest song is “2 [minutes] and change,” and there is a track longer than eight minutes.

The last track on the new album is Lillywhite and Stefan Lessard’s favorite last track from any DMB album. Lillywhite described it as “very uplifting.” “Mercy” is not this song.

Lillywhite compared the album to DMB’s “big three” (Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash and Before These Crowded Streets) by using the term “Big 4” in a February tweet.

Tower of Power’s Roger Smith plays keyboard on “a couple of tunes” on Dave Matthews Band’s new album. His specific instrument is a Hammond organ.

There are no old recordings of LeRoi Moore on the album. The saxophone parts are “all Jeff [Coffin].”

^^^ Exciting news!!! I'm happy to hear that Mercy is different on the recording, gotta say I wasn't a huge fan when I watched the Fallon show.

SO stoked to jam to DMB at Alpine again this summer!!!!

  • ive never seen dave live. Seems like he was really popular when i was in high school, now he's still raking in the dough playing live, but his albums arent getting the attention they used to get.

The stereotype obviously is that his fan base is a bunch of drunk frat boys. For those who have actually seen him live, is this accurate? is their a large contingent of those folks at the shows?

I always found that stereotype odd, partly, or largely because a large part of dave's mission in the band and with his music is social justice, activism, raising awareness of causes, getting involved, making a difference, stuff frat boys aren't typically associated with. Im a straight edger, but i clearly remember reading those notes he used to include inside the albums, included with the liner notes, and he talked about how hemp should be legalized. Maybe thats where the frat boy stereotype meets reality.

i dont listen to daves music much anymore, but ive always been a fan of the sort of jam band style of the songs in the live setting that he does, and the diverse musical arrangements he has, as well the interesting vocal harmonies.

Just scored two lawn seats for the tour opener in Houston May 18th. This will be the first DMB show for my wife and I. Looking forward to it. On a side note, the tickets were $40.50 each and my total bill from Ticketmaster was $111.50. $30 in fees to sell me a pair of concert tickets. That's almost the price of a third ticket.

There will be drunk frat boys at any show where booze and drunk girls are available. I've seen plenty of drunk idiots at PJ shows as well. Get reserved seats to eliminate most of the idiots.

^^This. There will be idiots at every show, just do your best to ignore them and just enjoy the music! DMB makes that very easy! :) Also, since DMB have been around for 21 years now, your 'frat boys' are probably more like middle aged men by now

And norm, thanks for posting 'What We Know So Far'-- I was gonna post that but you beat me to it! Good summary including some things I had no idea about on that. Just is getting me even more excited for DMB!!

Less than a month for me til my 1st of 3 DMB shows this summer!!! Bring on Hartford 1 and both Jones Beach dates!!! :D:D

i am SUPER STOKED about the new record! i thought that Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King was a NICE return to form, and to find out lillywhite is on board....hells yeah! i've got the Big Whiskey blanket hanging up in my main music room, alongside a few PJ posters. i love DMB & sure, there are some asses at their shows, but there are asses EVERYWHERE... it's a great show & they're super-tight musicians, as well. my favorite record of his is The Lillywhite Sessions or The Summer So Far (as i've also heard it called). if you don't count that one, because of its boot status, then it's got to be Before These Crowded Streets. i've always liked his solo stuff with tim reynolds & stefan hit the nail on the head in the big whiskey dvd when he said that tim coming back into the fold brought their sound back "home". trey anastasios' playing wasn't bad on Some Devil or on the Dave & Friends Tour, either...wish i could make it to a show this year, but will have to wait until next year...new album soon!!!!

    Hey all,

I scored myself two weeks in Toronto for work and made sure it matched up with the Toronto show (June 2).
Does anyone have one spare ticket? I let my warehouse membership lapse, as I had low seniority, and wasn't a fan of the message boards.

If anyone has a ticket, please PM me!!!

New album in the FALL! From antsmarching.org: http://www.antsmarching.org/news/2012/05/04/DMB-Album-Clearly-has-a-Fall-Release-Date

"Stefan has already tweeted it. Rashawn mentioned it to a fan. What more do you need to know that the 2012 Dave Matthews Band album won't be here until the fall? How about if you read it in Spanish?

Boyd Tinsley gave an interview to ESPNDeportes (that's ESPNSports in English, which doesn' t look nearly as cool as "Deportes") and talked tennis and the new album. The English Translation, which is not perfecto, does basically say that the album will be released in the fall (it actually says Autumn, but we're not nit-picky).

Boyd also gives a mention of a film he's producing, entitled Faces In The Mirror. That movie will be appearing in a few months, so keep an eye out for that as well."

You're in for a real treat!! Full report expected after the show! :)

So happy the tour is starting soon because that means I'm seeing DMB soon!!! The highlight of my summer for the past 3 years has been seeing DMB with my best friends. Any songs that anyone is hoping to hear at their shows this summer? Here's my list:

Songs I've never heard before that I most want to hear: Drive In Drive Out (DMB holy grail), Joy Ride, Typical Situation, Minarets, The Dreaming Tree, Spoon (latter two would complete BTCS live for me, my favorite DMB album!)

Songs I just want to hear because they have rocked live: Stay, Granny, The Stone, Warehouse, Pig, You Might Die Trying, Write A Song, Kill the King (fingers crossed! ROCKED in Atlantic City!), Best of What's Around, Lie In Our Graves, Alligator Pie
