So some time, there ought to be a philosophical discussion about what marriage is beyond a partnership to create and raise children.

These people seem to dwell on the fact that same sex marriages can't produce children AS IF that's all marriage is about and for.

With people out of work, the economy in the tank, and war everywhere, I find it ridiculous that this is even up for vote.

Grow up people. It's not about you and your Christian beliefs. Leave people alone. They are not hurting you or your precious children.

another step forward for intolerance and bigotry.

way to take us back 50 years.

    thanks north carolina.

the people opposed to this really need to stop and ask themselves if the real jesus would have actually supported this ban.

he is forgetting that he also regulated and defined the only acceptable marriage as that between a man and a woman....

    The Law.

Definition. Nature. I just got back from a gay wedding. Probably the best meal I've had in months. Potluck. It was my aunts wedding in Illinois. She's the best.

    Woot
  • I will temper my words.

While it's upsetting that people would so Gleefully do a victory dance that they passed a law that does literally nothing but harm someone else, their time will come. And it's not going to be pretty.

But this won't last. A vote like this would have been 20-25% higher only about 10 years ago.

And what's really funny is that the people of North Carolina thought they were voting for a ban on gay marriage. They weren't. They already had one.

No, what they just voted to do was make civil unions for BOTH Gay and Straight couples illegal. That means common-law marriages are also now illegal. And that means that a couple that's lived together for years can't include each other on their health insurance.

But the majority of the people in North Carolina were so blinded by their hate of my family that they didn't' really bother to read the bill. Oh well.

Ive lived in the north and the south. Both have ignorance. I've known just as many yankees that think a woman shouldn't have the choose as rebels who think gays should be allowed to marry.

The common denominator of ignorance isn't where someone was raised, its religion.

I think it's just a matter of time. The younger people are so much more tolerant. As they get out and vote more, things will change.

(I say this because I teach in a university and I've noticed that the students are kind to transgender students as well as to same sex couples.)

Well said. I wonder if the people of North Carolina are going to revolt after finding out what the bill actually is.

I was born in NC.....still living here as well. Some of these comments are way off base. There are as many transplants here that moved from up north as there are "locals". At least we live in a country where you have the right to vote. Alot of people are not happy with the results but the "majority" has spoken. Keep up the good fight !

    marriage...
"the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc."

A proponent of the law yesterday stated perhaps the gay community could leave marriage as is
and establish a new amendment, giving a new name for the union of same sex couples
    with the same legal rights.

it's not just against gay people but straight, too. the amendment was
Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.

no more common law marriage or anything like that.

As above. Seems this has been overlooked by voters. Unless no one 'lives in sin' in NC. Guess people got fixated on/blinded byy the 'gay' thing and didn't realise how far this law stretched and what the ramifications will be for straight couples.

but see thats the thing a.m. women were shackled to men in marriage so they could reproduce legally. it all came down to property.

back in the early days of colonisation in here in oz, common law marriages that had existed for many many years werent accepted because the powers that be.. the british overlords decided it wasnt the way things were done. fully forgetting that those they discriminated against in most cases were irish or lower class and didnt subscribe to the rules of the ruling class. but then again they also didnt allow catholics practice their own faith and catholics were punished for doing so, so...

Thank you. Indeed. I voted against this amendment, and I am disappointed by the results.
