Silverchair - Young Modern

  • They played a few new songs on a recent tour and said they were going to be on a the new record. I aslo heard they were going in more a more experimental direction where many of the tracks do not even have guitars. Not sure how I feel about that if it happens

Probably looking to meld the sounds of Silverchair with his former side project, Disassociatives (which started as I Can't Believe it's Not Rock), which was super experimental with no guitars. I wasn't into that project at all. Ben Gillies' Tambalane project was a fun listen though!

I handle Shawn's site, but I'm not him. I think I've passed along a message or two to him that I saw you post here before.

Young Modern took me a while to get into. Diorama I just LOVE, I always liked Silverchair but this album just blew me away and got me really interested in music. Daniel is a very clever boy.

I have been into The Chair since Tomorrow Ep days, and whilst I love Frogstomp, Diorama and Young Modern are brilliant. Certainly nothing like their earlier stuff, but most teenagers chnage their musical taste with time..and they were 14 when they started. So it's completely understandable that they sound nothing like they did on Frogstomp. It's also understandable they some fans don't like the new direction.
My only gripe is that they don't play anything off Frogstomp and only 1 or 2 off Freak in concert. Without Frogstomp, they may never have had the chance to make other albums, so give the fans (the ones paying the money) what they want ...and they want to hear Tomorrow, Pure Massacre, Israel's Son and others. You don't have to play them every night, just occasionally.

I love this album. Originally was into them early on then forgot about them for a while. Then one day a few years back I heard "Straight Lines" on the radio and couldn't believe it was the same band that made Frogstomp. I picked up this album, then went backwards to Diorama which I also thought was a great album. Even going back to Neon Ballroom, there's some traces of the more grand scale stuff they would get into with "Emotion Sickness". Favorite song on Young Modern has to be "Those Thieving Birds..." really crazy track. Glad I have this album on my ipod, going to throw it on at work right now! :D

I have to admit though, if I saw them in concert I'd be pretty pissed if they didn't play any of their early stuff. At least "Tomorrow", "Israel's Son", "Pure Massacre", "Blind" for me would be ones I'd want to hear.

Back in May they called it quits.

There were several threads about it. Like this one:

    http://forums.pearljam.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=158148&p=3673081&hilit=silverchair#p3673081

They did everything except actually say breakup, but they broke up. They said they're on indefinite hiatus for the foreseeable future. I read that the reason they used those words was to keep the possibility of playing for a good cause or charity event type thing open. But they said it wasn't fulfilling anymore and they needed to go their own ways, and they have. So they could possibly play again, but Silverchair as a recording and touring band is supposedly through. That doesn't mean much though, how many bands have broken up only to play again? My neighbor always rocks his 1982 Who "Farewell Tour" T-shirt on weekends which I get a chuckle out of.

Yep I think they're such an underrated band, everyone just stereotypes them for when they were 15 and did Frogstomp. They've changed so much though and for the better, the last 3 albums are incredible IMO.

  • Maybe it was just me, but I always found them a bit disappointing as a live act
I don't mean to offend anyone, a lot of what I say should be taken with a grain of salt... that said for most of you I'm a stranger on a computer on the other side of the world, don't give me that sort of power!

I think it was you, I had seen them over 6 times.. and the only show that sucked was with powderfinger.. due to the whole crowd being pro-powderfinger/anti-silverchair and some overweight bimbo kicking me and my mate in the back for standing up and singing to the chair...

Seeing them at the Enmore Theatre was probably the second best gig I have ever been to.. next to Pearl Jam in Melbourne...
    Sydney 8-11-06, 18-11-06; Melbourne 20-11-09, Sydney 22-11-09, Manchester 20-06-12, 21-06-12
  • damn! maybe I was at the wrong shows? I gave them I few chances, saw the four times with various friends and never felt a real stage-audience connection. Not that it wasn't fine just not up to my expectations

My favourite gig was Belvoir Amphitheater (Diorama Tour). I loved the 'Across the Great Divide' (with Powderfinger) concert in Perth - maybe being outdoors with plenty of space for fans/not fans to come and go made the difference? I also saw them NYE (with Ammonia?) must have been '97/'98?... Can't believe didn't hear about the break-up til now!?

Only saw them once back in '07 in Minneapolis. It was the same night as Pearl Jam at Lolla in Chicago. For a while I was bummed about not making it to Lolla, but when I heard about and got tickets to Silverchair for that night instead it was all good.

I really liked Young Modern, probably the only album of theirs that I repeatedly listened too all the way through. And when I made the move to Australia last year I was excited at the possibility of seeing them again in concert. (They never seemed to play the States much) But almost right after I got here, they announce that they are 'parting ways' or whatever the press release said. :(
