In the 8 or 9 years since YM, he said he's written like 300 tracks, of all genres. Prepare for more weird off the wall sounds coming from him. He's got chops and courage. I dig his creativity and willingness to experiment and put himself out there.

I actually dug his Dissociative's material with Paul Mac. I think people mistake changing one's sound as a bad thing...it's just evolving. Frogstomp is written in the eyes of a 15 year old whereas Young Modern is completely different people ie matured.

I have no qualms with changing one's sound... but when that change isn't good...

That said, I really enjoyed Straight Lines, Those Thieving Birds (etc), and Low. The rest of the album is just not my taste whatseover.

I am listening to Young Modern past few days after a multi year hiatus...it really is a very good album.  I liked it then and still now.  I can’t even describe it, just...quirky.  Anything new from Daniel as of late?!

He has done a song with a producer, What So Not, but I wasn't impressed, unless you liked his solo album, I can't see Silverchair fans liking it.
Young Modern is  great album though - completely agree

It would nearly be my favourite Silverchair album. Still dig a lot of their early stuff but Young Modern set a pretty high bar! I remember listening to it the first time and when If You Keep Losing Sleep came on I just smiled. Those
Thieving Birds is also right up there!

  • I would put Young Modern third in my personal list. Diorama will forever be the best. It's such a perfect album. Then maybe Neon Ballroom before Young Modern. It's close though.

Definitely agree on Diorama, their best and also one of the best albums in Australian Music history. All the others are pretty close for me as I still love Frogstomp and Freak Show as well.

  • I always thought Young Modern was a solid album. Diorama is my personal favorite. The SRC pressing of Neon Ballroom is fantastic

They could cut it live too! Saw them numerous times across their career. From small theatres to arenas. Their ‘Live from FarAway Stables’ is great too! Even with a change of musical direction over the years they could still rock the shit out of their older stuff like Israel’s Son, The Door et al.

Didn’t Daniel do something recently with Eddie!? I’m sure he did but I’ll have to look it up!

Edit: that’s right, they did some work together on the Beatles tunes for Beat Bugs tv series.
