She has been ok so far tonight. I just do not get it! She has been so good in her kennel, until now. Not sure what to do? So when i left again today, she had no bed and no blanket, she looked at me like you really want to go in my kennel....She had to sleep on the hard plastic. I felt bad, but had no choice.

when i got norm, he chewed up the beds i put in the kennel too...i just ended up putting a couple old towels in there...he didn't chew on those...most likely because he couldn't pull them apart which i think is all he wanted to do anyway :?

Okay, this is sort of weird, but funny. We were at our neighborhood Starbucks with Brian the dog about five months ago when a woman approached us and asked if he was trained. We said he was still a puppy, but he could sit and stay and stuff like that. She said she was a producer for the National Geographic Channel (hey, this is LA) and they were looking for a German shepherd to be in a documentary.
can you ask if they have any need for a 3.5 year old golden who refuses to be brushed, humps legs when excited, jumps on visitors and rarely comes when called?

    she is pretty cute, tho.

Maybe my husband can be a talent agent - he joked about getting Brian head shots. At least I think he was joking. I bet he can make Gracie a star.

And you (and Norm) will appreciate this - as they were getting ready to shoot Brian's big scene my husband noticed that Brian was wearing his San Francisco Giants collar and he told the assistant director, "Um, you might want to get rid of that."

Towels are a great idea, why didn't we think of that (three dog beds later)? I saw in a catalogue some kind of "chew proof" dog bed. I think it cost as much as a car though.

gracie shredded everything we ever put in her kennel or dog run....beds, towels, carpet  . she ended up getting the hard plastic, hard concrete treatment.

it paid off...she now takes up most of our bed.

I forgot to mention the blankets and chaise lounge cushions we tried in her kennel...she chewed those, too . and, like sophie, it was a behavior that just suddenly came on after not doing it. :?

Bugsy did this at first when he was a puppy. For a while we thought we could just gate him in the kitchen w/ some puppy pads instead of putting him in a crate - he chewed up the puppy pads instead of using them for their intended purpose. We tried giving him beds - whether in the crate or not, and he would chew those too. We gave up on letting him have a bed for a while.

Years pass and he got over it. He knows what his bed is now. He has a bed out of the crate and inside the crate. Maybe Sophie is just getting bored in there? Is there a good durable toy that you know she cannot destroy that you could leave in the crate with her? That way, if she wants to chew, she chews on her toy.

I think maybe what also helped, in addition to passing the teething stage, was teaching the dog what the bed was. We go to our bed, Bugsy goes in his bed at night. (Its nice to have a puppy in bed with you, but eventually they grow and take up too much room and its just easier to make them sleep in their own beds at night from the beginning).... Also...if you ever notice her chewing on anything that she shouldn't be - catching her in the act - chewing on her bed or blanket while you are there, take it out of her mouth, say NO and give her something that is acceptable to chew on. Do NOT give the dog old shoes, socks or anything that is not specifically a dog toy, or that could cause some confusion.

Im sure this is just a puppy being a puppy. There are some really good durable toys out there that you can stuff some treats in too...so that can help give her incentive to chew on a toy that she may not initially care for.

Sophie eat part of the towel.

She has 8 bones to chew on, and 2 chew toys, 1 of which is her favorite. So if she is getting bored, maybe i will try to tie and hang something from the top of the kennel, to keep her busy.

Hi Monty, looking good and happy.

    How are you doing PJaddicted?

I'm actually doing really really well. Today is 2 months. I miss him beyond words, but I'm smiling more and crying less. He was one in a million, and died far too young....but how lucky am I that he chose ME to be his best friend through his short life? We will meet again I'm so sure of that fact!

    My best friend....miss you Petey.
