framed poster thread

Hey Ladies and gentlemen,

I'm looking for some help in the northern NJ area. i have a few posters to frame at a reasonable rate. I have been to michaels on 2 occasions and feel like i am getting ripped off with their supoosed "50-60% off discount."

Can anyone recommend a shop that can beat their prices? Send me a message on here if you could suggest anywhere. Thanks

I love that poster. It really is one of the best. Plus it was my first show. I wish I had picked one up, although the idea of carrying around that thing outside on what was a super hot day in a huge outdoor venue (plus I think security was spraying people with fire hoses) doesn't seem like it really would have worked. The only poser that really comes close to being as good as that one for me is the 98 Dallas poster with the slushies and the magic bullet. If I ever get a big fat raise, an error in my favour on my tax refund or if I win the lottery (which might be tough since I never play the lottery and would have to find a winning ticket on the street) you better believe I am buying that poster and getting a sweet frame for it.

That kind of sucks. But other than the dry mounting how was the quaility and the materials used? And how was the price?

Dry Picture Mounting
With this technique the image is permanently attached to the mount board. It is often used in cases where the image will be float mounted or left un-framed on a thick aesthetically pleasing mount board. The dry-mounting process cannot be reversed so it is not a conservative technique. Over time bubbles can form in the artwork depending on environmental conditions, and the skill level of the person. It is generally not recommended for Polaroid and Inkjet prints since both are sensitive to temperature.

Dry mounting works by placing a special adhesive tissue between the photograph and the mount board. It is then placed in a special press that will apply pressure either mechanically or with a vacuum to press the artwork against the mount board while applying a high temperature to activate the adhesive in the tissue.

Dry mounting itself does not hurt the image significantly. The primary reason it decreases the value of original artwork is that it prevents re-framing which is more of an issue for very long periods of time. The decrease in value will be much less significant for items that are not one of kind originals. It is not possible to prevent acid components from leaking into a picture frame over time and contaminating the mat and mount board. For this reason museums reframe original artwork now and then in order to completely remove those acidic compounds. If the artwork is dry mounted, then you can not replace the mount board. Long term conservation is compromised In that case, a museum will go through extra effort to keep the mount board from getting contaminated such as providing an additional backing that can be replaced and by keeping the edges of the original backing away from the edge of the photo frame.

thanks! so, when I scotch tape my posters to the mat, it's a half assed dry mount? :shock:

I'm sure people will shudder that I do this but I don't plan on ever "un-framing" my posters....it works for me
