The Tragically Hip (new and improved official thread)

Once upon a time this was the longest running non-Pearl Jam thread on this forum. I fully intend to restore it to it's original glory. With the Hip on tour this summer and a new album on the way, I figured this was the right time to bring it back. Speaking of their upcoming 13th album, it appears that the Bob Rock experiment is over, as the band are producing the new record themselves at their home studio. Their first self-produced album since 1996's "Trouble at the Henhouse". I can't wait to hear the results!
2011 summer tour dates:
06/24/11 Watertown Fairgrounds: Watertown, NY United States

That is easily the best version of Fully Completely ever captured on film. The manic energy on display from both the band and the crowd is just insane. Gord has certainly mellowed out a bit since those days. But check out his 3-minute long rant in the "Hundredth Meridian" clip that I posted above from 2009. The dude is still crazy as a fuckin' loon, and on a good night he's still the most entertaining frontman in rock n' roll. I love it."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. Great pic, Restlesssoul! Gord is such a fantastic guy. When I was living in Ottawa I went to a poetry reading that he did at the National Library. He hung around after the event to meet fans and sign copies of his book. I was lucky enough to be able to chat with him for a good 10 or 15 minutes. He signed my copy of Coke Machine Glow and underneath his name he wrote "...in conversation with Casey." It was very cool. I've also been able to meet the other 4 guys a couple of times over the years, and they're all class acts. Just totally down to earth and very gracious of their fans."I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Another great clip from the old Heksenketel video. Best version of "Blow at High Dough" I've ever seen. My favorite part is the shot of the crowd near the beginning, right after they hit that big heavy downbeat and the song kicks into gear. Awesome.
On another note, I finally bought my my tickets for the Edmonton show on July 14th. My friend and I decided to splurge and bought the $105 VIP tickets (only $30 more than the regular GA ticket). Apparently if you fork over the extra money it gets you into some kind of special seating area in front of the stage complete with private bar service. How great is that!"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

Yeah dude, night 2 is one of the coolest concert experiences I have ever had. So many great memories, Steph playing the guitar during Bobcaygeon, and then the hand to the heart. You getting the Hanky snatched back and the comment from Gord, the 4 of us rocking out at the stage, getting the setlist at the end.{if (work != 0) {

Wow! That thing must be incredibly rare. I don't think I've ever seen it before. It's amazing some of the cool stuff you can find on Ebay. Here's another one I've never seen:

I had the pleasure of seeing Gord last year in Calgary on The Grand Bounce tour. It's a very different vibe from a Hip show. He's not as hyper as he usually is, but he still breaks out a few rants during certain songs and chats with the crowd quite a bit. His solo gigs have much more of a relaxed "coffee house" vibe to them, as the music is more mellow and experimental. His band is pretty awesome, particularly the adorable Julie Doiron who plays bass, guitar, and adds some gorgeous background vocals on many of the songs. He doesn't play any Hip songs either, which is interesting. Perhaps he doesn't feel right playing Hip material without the other guys. But he does break out some really cool covers. Here's a killer performance of the Rolling Stones' "Ventilator Blues":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N4mmuM6Ods
And here's a great version of "Yellow Days" off his latest album. Love his intro to this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6p2eEFf ... re=related
Anyways, if you ever get the chance to see him solo, I'd highly recommend it. It's a completely different side of him that we don't get to see too often.Post edited by direwolf74 on"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce.
