    Many things change. Mistakes are made, wrongs are righted. Segregation/slavery are good examples of ways of American life that were around from the very beginning but are now unacceptable.

    Besides, this is a taxation issue at the heart of it. Your god will not be taken away from you, they just don't want to contribute to his advertising budget.

    This separation of church and state issue has gotten out of control. If you don't like it, then legislate something to that effect... but stop running to the courts. And I am definitely an ACLU fan, I just think they need to pick better fights.

    how is this high school graduation venue a civil liberties risk ? I aprove of the cross on the building and you do not then who's civil rights are being affected, for that matter any cross on any building or piece of land ? if the cross is removed then my civil rights are being affected right ?
    the aclu has done some good thing's but this is waaaay out of their control it's not a cut and dry right or wrong matter that they can determin legal or moral issue's that are being abused,
    so again I say F-em !!!

    this is also a volger display of power in my opinion, at this point they no longer represent the people as a whole,only the best interest of their(aclu) agenda, wanna bet that millions of dollars are used to do this and where do those millions come from ?..the people that contribute to the aclu fund maybe.in my opinion thay are over stepping their bounds.

    Since you are bringing up the way the country was founded, the bill of rights was never meant to apply to the states. There were state sponsored churches well into the 1800's. So this would have been perfectly acceptable by the founding fathers.

    The cross in and of itself does not my violate civil rights. We have the right to freedom of religious expression. The fact that it is being viewed because of a state sponsored function may be considered unconstitutional under the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment and subsequent legal decisions.

    I'm not going to get into 'intent' because that's difficult to prove. I've read some of the congressional convention debates and there were people, Madison, who wanted to put in restrictions on the states but it was thought that those restrictions would be better placed in state constitutions. So, in that essence, you very well could be correct, there were certain people that wanted restrictions on the states. That being said, that wasn't the constitution that was passed. The constitution, as passed, was a restriction on the federal government, not the state government.

    I don't believe for one second that the first amendment was meant to cover someone's 'right' to attend a graduation ceremony and not have to look at religious(muslim, christian, hindu etc.) symbols.

    I guess the ACLU should start issuing lawsuits to children in public schools that are wearing or displaying religious symbols as well. Technically, the state is funding their education, much like they are paying for this graduation site.

    No, it's just fine for students to wear things that represent them and their faith. But it's NOT ok for the school to display religious symbols or endorse one religion over another.

    I think we are on the same page with your first paragraph, but....

    The bold comment is really just the surface issue, don't you think? The legal argument is that a state sponsored event is being held in a church, and that will be up to the courts to decide if it is unconstitutional or not, I guess.
