I agree with the theory behind much of the aclu's actions however it looks like they could pick their battles more wisely sometimes. However i'll have to look into this independently since we have fox news bringing us this story.

Your strong response to a relatively minor issue reflects how fox news attempts to manipulate others. Sorry you buy into it. Their conservative agenda underlies nearly every story. Listen to the words hannity chooses when talking about something. It's interesting, because he's intentionally twisting stories and choosing specific words to push an agenda, but on the surface, tries to make it look like he's just a regular guy, a straight talker, standing up for common sense and good ol' traditional American values.

Good points all around, Go Beavers!

And let's face it, not everything ACLU does works even for all of it's members- you can't please everybody. But rather than a quick verbal jab such as "kiss my ass", you would gain more by recognizing the valuable work they've done and becoming a member and voicing your concerns constructively. They do listen to members!

Very good point. Those that think it is offensive stay home and let those that enjoy graduation in a building with history alone. Damn these people act as though this is a strip club or something....

Here is an NBC report on the story, as I know quite a few dislike going to the Fox website.

    http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Fight-Over-Religious-Symbol-Could-Stall-NJ-Graduation-Ceremony-121698814.html

They report that their was one complaint by a woman last year who attended the graduation services. It also reports that she doesn't even live in the school district.

I can only imagine the emotional damage and suffering that was dealt upon her by seeing a total of four religious artifacts while visiting from out of town to attend a high school graduation. Thank the Lord that the ACLU has stepped in to prevent countless (if you can only count to 20) future victims from suffering the same emotional fate.

    Godspeed, ACLU, godspeed.

So like I said, become a member and voice your opinion so that you can do something actively. Just don't disclude in your thinking the many positive things the ACLU has done to fight racism, insure civil liberites, etc.

I only have enough free time to post ramblings on Pearl Jam message board, less yet join a group of scum-sucking lawyers in debate. :)

My biggest problem is that the ACLU operates on the theory of "slippery slope" and will defend anybody, even if it defies common sense. Perhaps the world needs this type of group to maintain balance, but I have big issues in their inability to operate outside of black-and-white guidelines.

I feel for the people losing out on their tradition but maybe their tradition is illegal. Public school...public money...public building. Having religious symbols present is not appropriate.

I think there would be a whole lot of hooting and hollering if a public school, funded by tax dollars, had its rite of passage graduation ceremony in an Islamic temple.

If their tradition is so important perhaps these citizens would like to hold an additional ceremony at this church on their own dime.

Yes, that's what's next. No German cars! You need to be afraid because soon you will have no freedoms whatsoever. You need to listen to people who know who the enemy is, buy their books, their t-shirts, their DVD's, see them on tour, and watch their news shows. If you don't listen to those people, you wont know who the enemies are that threaten your very existence, and then what will you do?

Many things change. Mistakes are made, wrongs are righted. Segregation/slavery are good examples of ways of American life that were around from the very beginning but are now unacceptable.

Besides, this is a taxation issue at the heart of it. Your god will not be taken away from you, they just don't want to contribute to his advertising budget.

One person does not want to contribute.
The rest of the tax payers want what they paid for. The trouble maker does not have to attend or at least practice some Tolerance.

This separation of church and state issue has gotten out of control. If you don't like it, then legislate something to that effect... but stop running to the courts. And I am definitely an ACLU fan, I just think they need to pick better fights.

Actually, that's a total lie. A big bag of bullshit that Christianazis have been trying to shove down our throats but it's a lie. Very few of the founding fathers were Christians. Most agreed it was what was wrong with the world.

This country was founded by people trying to escape religious persecution. Not institutionalize it.

I know... I said I was outa here, but this comment reminded me of this quote:

"I have found Christian dogma unintelligible. Early in life I absented myself from Christian assemblies."

    (Benjamin Franklin, in_"Toward The Mystery")

For more evidence that few Founding Fathers were practicing Christians check this out:
