i love the songs from ten and love to hear them live but I agree it sounds "over"-produced. another way to put it, you can listen to any other PJ album and it has a "timeless" quality, it sounds like it could have been made yesterday. Ten is the only album that sounds dated (i.e., it sounds like a early 90's album).

    Well said, good point.

Its kinda silly, but it almost seems like its not cool to really love this album on here...

But come on, this is, IMO an all-time classic rock album. Black, Alive, Even Flow, Release, Porch, Oceans...all on one album?

People talk about the Binaural sessions being PJ at their peak...but imagine Ten with Ledbetter, SOLAT, Footsteps, etc...

I get the production issues, i can't argue with them...id love to hear a BOB remix.

I love Ten but I think of all the Pearl Jam records it has the least variety in musical styles. Thus when ranking PJ records it comes in near the bottom.

    I love Ten.

    Always will.

But It's kind of like your first fuck in a way. You always remember it...but you've since moved on to other things.

    and agree again.

Ten was the bands most rehearsed album.. they knew the songs inside out before recording them... so it sounds polished.... but they are brilliant songs though... got me into the band.
so they played all these gigs and practiced too much?

  • ...about Ten.

I recently left a few CDs with my father. Among them was "Ten" and KoL's "Because of the Times".

My father has "decent" musical taste. I was stunned the evening he got drunk and told me about all the bands he saw live when he was in the Army (Fleetwood Mac, Kiss, etc.). He's always been a huge fan of Aerosmith, and completely loves nearly everything Kid Rock puts out (That makes my soul hurt).

He hated Ten, but has requested any music by KoL I can get him.

I spent almost an hour thinking about this while I was driving home after my last visit. I thought about how it was possible for my dad to dismiss the single most revolutionary album in my life (no album has had a bigger affect on my music choices since).

My father said it sounded "dirty" and he couldn't understand the lyrics.

So I listened to Ten, and as I did I realized that while I completely loved every moment of every song, I would resounding prefer a live version of any of those songs.

It is a wonderful album, it is classic, powerful, and great. Yet, going into it blind, as an album, it doesn't hold up to any of the post Vitalogy albums.

I cherish Ten, and every song, but when I grab a PJ disc, I normally go for No Code, Yield, Binaural, or a bootleg.

So, I decided that the next discs I give dad are going to be a bootleg show. I bet he loves it and never makes the connection to the songs he's already determined he didn't like.

    ...my 2 pennies.
If Adam and Eve had Taco Bell they would have never eaten that filthy fruit...
  • personnally I can't rank PJ albums. Each album has it's own feeling and meaning to me. I love 'em all and tend to periodically give each album a revisit. I love to revisit Ten.

As far as production goes.... c'mon Ten is rich with highs and lows and totally representative of the band at the time. I believe the production reflects the youth and energy of the band that drew us all in so long ago . It doesn't need to be remixed IMO.

Is it just me, or does Ten got a raw deal on here? It's like you're not a 'real' fan if you like Ten.
It's as though you're only a real fan if you love No Code!

What is it about Ten that some people don't like?! Don't get me wrong, it's not even my personal favourite Pearl Jam album but I can appreciate Ten for the master piece it is.

I know it'll forever be associated with the whole 'rise of grunge' and the 'Seattle scene' thing. I know it sold to the masses, had massive hit singles and that Pearl Jam were MTV's darlings for a while. But that doesn't make it a bad album.

As for the 'popular', 'hit' singles, nobody can tell me that Even Flow, Alive, Black and Jeremy aren't great songs. C'mon, they're classics.
Add Once, Why Go?, Oceans, Garden, Porch, Deep and, of coures Release and you've got an incredible album.
Hell, on the European version we even had Wash, Dirty Frank and Alive (live) as bonus tracks!!!

So what is it? Snobbery? Elitism? Or am I just wrong, and that Ten just isn't all that?!

Eh, who gives a fuck. Ten is a classic album. An exceptional album.

I couldn't give a rat's ass what anyone else thinks.

It's this Elitist attitude that you get with some of the fanatics of every band. You'll see the same crap on the Springsteen boards, U2 boards.....all of them. Just some dopes trying to make them themselves seem superior, or something. Screw 'em.

Having said that, No Code is my favorite :)

I think it is subconscious resentment for the lack of love for albums like No Code and onward in relation to how much praise and attention Ten still gets.

Ten is PJ's least favorite album from a "production value" standpoint,...

  • Ten is a classic... and as for it's being overproduced, we're talking Epic Records (home of Michael Jackson - still huge in 1991) at the close of -- let's face it -- the 1980s, when all records containing guitar music were overproduced. It's a relic of its time, but still fantastic.

The popularity of the record was mentioned above, but I don't think that the flack that Ten receives on this board is so much an aspect of "people not liking popular things" as "die hard fans who hate that albums post-Vitalogy don't get the same amount of credit, and so grow to resent Ten and Vs."
