i don't think no code has any filler. but then, no code did for me what you say ten did for you. saved my life. it is a perfect album in my estimation, and i think time will be very kind to it.

but ten is a classic album and was my intro to the band. that said, i think the production hurts it. i don't enjoy listening to it. song-for-song, it might be their best. every song on there is amazing. in that sense, it is their strongest set of songs. but as an ALBUM, i think it suffers and my reason is the production. i don't find it charming. hearing the remixes on their greatest hits album is a revelation. those songs are among their best, but it's so hard to listen to that album because it sounds awful to me. so overblown. i can really only handle 'why go' anymore.

you're spot on here. stone has always been their strongest songwriter. his riffs are awesome (though jeff of course threw in a few great ones for good measure, like jermy and why go). the band was at their best when stone and jeff came up with great tunes and ed managed to match stunning lyrics to them. it does feel forced sometimes now... either ed trying to bring emotion to someone else's words or the rest of the band going through the motions on ed songs that really don't need more than one guitarist and a drummer. the band sounds thinner than ever before, it doesn't sound like the passionate collective effort of the early days.

*EDIT* i'll add that rateyourmusic does NOT have ten as their best album. far and away the best reviews go to the greatest hits album, with benaroya behind. to most people i know, greatest hits is all they want. pearl jam was bigger than ten, and most people would rather have the highlights of their career than just ten.

so, the lyrics aren't all Eddie's? I thought he wrote almost all of them.....
    no????????
Baby, You Wouldn't Last a Minute on The Creek......

Together we will float like angels.........

In the moment that you left the room, the album started skipping, goodbye to beauty shared with the ones that you love.........

stone wrote the lyrics to mandkind. since then, all band members have contributed lyrics of their own. none of the following songs are ed lyrics:

    no way
    pilate
    low light
    all those yesterdays
    gods' dice
    evacuation
    nothing as it seems
    of the girl
    rival
    cropduster
    ghost
    you are
    get right
    help help
    all or none
    parachutes
    inside job

i think the last album was a step back towards the old days actually. which might be why it was such a step up from where they'd been headed.
    and like that... he's gone.

Ed wrote the lyrics for Evacuation, Cropduster, and Parachutes, and co-wrote the lyrics for Ghost, You Are, and All or None, but otherwise you are correct.

wow, so is that why ( would you say???) that like the songs on the one cd that sounded like a lot of old (I don't know), songs, like from anothers decade and so different from their others?

oh, c'mon help me....someone.......what is that cd I am thinking of?

    what do you think?

maybe it is a thing that you would need to be a bit older to appreciate? I am sure that some people love Ten and are young, but I think you might need to have aged with this band if you are going to think that Ten is a great cd.

just my thoughts..........mix and stir.......and pour????????

    I don't know..............

Young one!! If 31 is young, then great!

Glad I got some people's juices flowing on this topic. Also glad I'm not alone in my thinking.
Like I said, Ten's not my favourite Pj album, not sure what that is, but I think Ten gets a hard time.

Loads of people seem to criticise the production. But it think that, whatever the band members say now, that's exactly whet they wanted to sound like at the time.
Listen to Mother Love Bone, Bad Radio!!! Stone & Jeff's love of Aerosmith. Mike's love of Foreigner!!!
Eddie may like to make out these days that he's spme punk rocker, but listen to Bad Radio. It's hardly Black Flag or The Stooges!!

Keep the love of Ten flowing. If only album #9 is somewhere near that level, I for one will be happy!!!
    Cymru Am Byth

PJ albums, at the moment!! -
    1,Vs 2,Vitalogy 3,No Code 4,Yield 5,Ten 6,Backspacer, 7Pearl Jam 8,Binaural 9,Riot Act.
  • Ten is boring and mainstream. No Code is wonderful. I'm an elitist.
