    These guys still rock.

Seems like Eddie doesn't. He wants to be more of a folk singer type. And I have no problem with that. Except I like the old Eddie.

I dunno. He wrote Severed Hand, which I have trouble sitting still for. He's into Life Wasted. As far as old "rockers" go, he's been screeching the hell out of Blood the last couple tours pretty well.

But that "old Ed" isn't coming back. He's 43 years old for God's sake. There's nothing sadder than a 43-year-old man pretending he's still 25. Just look at Steven Tyler.

That's it. I've officially had it with this thread. :)

How could you ... why ... but ... I ... look at the words, man!

    Calm down dude. :)

The lyrics are beautiful, no question - the musical arrangement, I don't know, doesn't cut it for me.

I think what we're all saying is that Ed needs a new formula for coming up with a set list. Between the number of times we all watch the DVDs and go to concerts, there are certain songs we're just over - not to mention that the band is WAY over them.

I do, however, love this band live for the energy they put out, and take on from the audience. You can't get to that energy level without some of the headbangers and songs we're over.

Well that would depend on what kind of 25 year old you were wouldn't it? 25 year old Ed was a fiery, angry, world weary grunge man. Pure rage mixed with insight. 25 year old Keith Richards (Steven Tyler's not as good of an example; he was a tool then and he's a tool now) was a decadent, indulgent rock star. Ed definitely still has that anger. But he has also found love and peace. I think he's currently in a conflict between those two poles. He knows his fans want him to rock out, but he's not sure if he wants to. His recent tour was a way of testing the waters, trying out the folk singer persona a little. It's possible he might decide to go completely in that direction. But I don't know if that's where Mike, Jeff, Stone, and Matt want to go (Stone maybe, but I think he still loves his thrashy grunge riffage). I mean just look at Mike when they sit down to do an acoustic set, he can barely stay in his chair.

Therefore, Pearl Jam may be in its last years.

I couldn't really think of one. I just opened this thread to tell everyone they were wrong ;)

Seriously ... if I had to pick a song, it would probably be one of those I don't really count as actual PJ songs, like Sweet Lew or something.

Most all of their actual material does at least *something* for me.

Breakerfall - Awful opener, and how this made Binaural in front of Sad & Fatal is still a mystery.

Deep - Worst song on Ten, although the verse is tolerable. Should never be played again.

Small Town - I don't hate this song, but its never moved me. Should be played less live

Do The Evolution - Not bad by any means, but overrated.

And a few more...Ghost, Help, Help, Life Wasted, Rats & Thumbing My Way

They used to rock the hell out of Rearviewmirror around '96 or so. It was maybe one of my top five songs. Now it seems like they're rushing to get through it, Ed doesn't even bother with half the lyrics, etc.

I dont think ed is really sick of any of the songs they play. He still seems into it to this day for even flow or alive. Plus, how can they be rushing throught RVM when they jam out longer now then they used to.

On a side note, why are so many people getting up in arms about this thread? It has NOTHING to do with "hating" Pearl Jam. It's as though some people can't understand that during the course of ANY bands career, they are bound to have a few songs that even the most die hard fan isn't into. I, as well as the other posters on this thread, are just sharing songs that we could do without. What's the harm in that?

Of course, I could always point out that anybody who insists that EVERY song put out by their favorite band is a classic which cannot be scrutinized is a fan-boy, nut-swinging tool, but that would ALSO be generalizing.........

Wow, I LOVE watching people get all excited about their musical tastes--awesome! IMO, I agree with some of the posters regarding Eddie and the band's convictions when performing songs. Its clear that they play alot of songs because they feel they are obligated to (even flow, small town, betterman), but I bet they still dig it because they enjoy watching the crowd get off on it. Then, there are the songs that they really want to play, and they dont have as much interest in what the crowd thinks. Whether someone likes it or not, Eddie sings Come Back with SO MUCH emotion, does this alone make it a "good" song or not? Same with No More and all the songs of the new record- its clear the band loves playing the new stuff. I think Eddie drives himself batty trying to come up with set lists that work for everyone!
I hold the pain, release me!

Eh, I'm still gonna disagree. Ed hasn't sung the "I couldn't breathe" bit on RVM in like 10 years. He seems bored during Evenflow. "Go" has become a shell of its former self. Animal, too.

I'm not complaining. I still think they are great songs. I just think it's human nature ... you sing certain songs over and over, and you lose the emotion behind them. Ed is 43 years old now. I don't expect him to be in touch with the same emotions now as he was when he was 25.

But I think it's a reason certain songs sound better in concert now than others.
