Pearl Jam pulling a Radiohead

• I know some people commented on here saying it would be "suicide". I think at this point in their career it really doesnt matter what they release, they've been a band long enough to do whatever they want. I think if Of the earth is any indication of where they might go we might see a mixture of acoustic stuff that they seem to be pulling from ed's solo career along with strange songs like of the earth. I think they have a dedicated enough of a fan base that we would stay loyal to them even if they had a failed experiment. I like how their sound always changes similar to how radiohead sounds nothing like how they did on their first pearl jam doesnt either and i think we're blessed to have two bands that aren't afraid to express themselves the way they want. P.S. i really enjoy the new radiohead :)

i only said "suicide" because of the reaction to the new Radiohead album.

But, I do agree with your statement in terms of the band being well enough established to not actually lose its original fans. It may just take some time for such a big change to smooth over with some of the fans who are so attached to their "sound" that made them such an established band in the first place.

Please NOOOOOOOOO

Radiohead are free to ruin their genius with electronic wankery but please not Pearl jam.

(by all means this is a personal opinion, im aware some people like the electronic wankery...just not me).

Pearl jam defintely cannot pull what radiohead does. But they can experiment a little bit. Of The Earth is a great example of experimentation, and that song was generally loved by everyone.

If they do experiment in that way, alot of the contributions would probably be from Matt. He seems to be the one band member who is the most creative in experimentation. Have you heard the original version of "The Fixer"? I love that version more than the original.

To this day, I still can't believe that the band that made Vitalogy/No Code/Yield put out Self titled and Backspacer.
I am sorry but i hear absolutly no creativity when I listen to (st/bs) even the art work is very juvenile.
Hopefully their go back to their experimental / creative side.
• Couldn't agree more Heidijam. Maybe Mike can start playing an ondes martenot like Jonny in this vidhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4hZt--0Yno

• yeah
backspacer was very mediocre. they indeed need to go in a different direction. S/T to me blows BS out of the water. A band as good as Pearl Jam should never take a step back from a previous album. It should get better.

A new approach would be great for the band right now. Backspacer was a very safe album for them. At least S/T had some songs that were "different" such as Inside Job and even though WWS is just a flat out rocker, it sitll has hints of different guitar riffs like you hadnt heard from the band before.

I think many people will agree that albums such as Vitalogy, No Code and Yield are pretty much everyone's favorites. That is because they experimented with different sounds. Dont get me wrong I love Backspacer but I would love it, if Eddie sang the phone book. :D

I just think it is time to do something a little different.

I agree, they seemed like they went back to their roots with Avocado, and with BS, well, it sounded like an EV record rather than a PJ record. I would love to hear a more creative album in the future.
• People keep asking where Jonny is on the new Radiohead disc. My question is: Where's Mike on Backspacer?

The real Mike really hasn't been on an album in quite a while. It's almost like they have completely abandoned the guitar solo after Vitalogy. A couple here and there on each album but not enough in my opinion. In fact Stone probably has just as many.

It's not just Backspacer. He hasn't had a memorable solo since NAIS and that was 11 years ago.

There aren't any great solos on Avocado. Severed Hand and comatose are average solos. the days of alive, black, why go, Go, Animal, rearviewmirror, Corduroy, Betterman, etc haven't been heard in a very, very long time. I'm talking classic lead guitarist rock solo's.

Now we are left with fill in lead riffs that are great but they seem to have completely gone technical over traditional. Not my favorite thing but I still love the band.

Yep that's what I meant. They have gone with technical little lead riffs instead of traditional ripping guitar solos.
