The minute one might say something like that, you can't help but thinking in

    John Lennon

and then immediately comes to mind

    Bob Dylan, and then

    Neil YOung, and then

    Roger Waters, and then

    Pete Towsnhend, and then

of course Beethoven, but then again, you can't think of

    Duke Ellington, and then

    the GREAR DAvid Bowie...

    and this does not end.

    etc. etc. etc.
I could easily say a great deal of them are overrated, too. Just because they were around in the '60s and '70s, doesn't mean they're the greatest musicians ever. I am also not saying Kurt is/was, either.

Not his fault that people labelled him as the "spokesman of his generation" and thought of him as basically the second coming of Christ, especially since he never wanted to be the spokesman for anything. As a musician, no, he isn't the best, but as a songwriter, he's very skilled. Overrated? Possibly. I don't see how he couldn't be, with the way some people revere him. But I don't understand how anybody could call him "mediocre". Ah well, different strokes, I guess.

You're paraphrasing me. I said much of his material was mediocre; not that he was mediocre as a musician (or a musian  ). Seriously: Kiss Kiss Molly's Lips...

We're all biased here, but Nirvana could never touch Pearl Jam, except maybe in the drummer dept.
    Molly's Lips was a cover.

Hmmmmm sorry mate, have to disagree with you there. He was neither the greatest musian or musician  (sorry, couldn't help myself). This statement Kurt said about what Pearl Jam were doing in his opinion comes to mind also "Pioneering a corporate, alternative and cock-rock fusion" and I just can't help but think, what an idiot. Besides what about people like Leadbelly?? Great, great grandfathers of blues who started the whole ball rolling? It's too bigger call to make being that there are way too many genres of music for there to be one greatest musician.

Kurt was great, not the greatest, not the worst, just great, that is all.

When it comes to musicians/songwriters in the 20th century, no contest:

    Lennon/McCartney

OK, now that we got that out of the way:

Kurt was definately a musical legend in the 90's and basically was the leader of a musical genre. But as the greatest musician of all time: I have to disagree. I love Kurt and love his music, but the best is a stretch.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

You know I'm agreeing with you. No one revolutionized music in the 20th century more than the two of them...in fact, all four of them.

  • kurt was without a doubt the most important musician of the 1990's and Nirvana the most important band of that decade.

For all our love of PJ and Ed and our love of Chris Cornell and Layne and Jerry and Shannon, the truth is when the history books are written, 50 years from now, we will love those bands and people, but we will remember Kurt and Nirvana. Thats just the way it goes.

Ive been a member here for 7 years. I have seen in that time many many posts on kurt and nirvana. Nearly all, without exception turn into kurt bashing threads. I have to suggest this is partly because of the fact that as I said the reality of the matter is, whenever people think of grunge or of the 90;s, or of important music in the 1990's, despite the fact we all love the musicians I listed above, the images will always be kurt, his death and Nirvana and Nevermind. Thats the truth and anyone who denies that truth is blind or naive or an idiot.

yes there was hype, yes there was media promotion and all that. But grunge was HUGE. It wasnt just a media hype thing. It legitimately was a big deal to people. And I also think people talk about the power of Ed's words and music now. you see that all the time here, on this board, People saying PJ's music has changed their lives. I agree, my life too has been altered by this band.

But conversely, or along with that, I do think people's live legitimately were changed by kurt. I think he did legitimately speak for alot of teens at the time, and alot of people viewed him as speaking for the voiceless.

His death, and the shocking nature of it also will always be a part of it. There has never really been a musician before of since who has been that huge and killed himself so bluntly and directly.

No band or musician really equals the impact at the time of Nirvana and Kurt. No equals at all.

i agree it was awful, and I feel bad for frances bean. But the guy was 27. Im 26 right now and am lost and confused and really dont have any direction at all in my life. to expect someone, anyone, to have their stuff together and be able to figure themselves out, to find themselves IN GENERAL is tough, let alone doing that while dealing with chronic stomach pain, a horrific childhood, and being in a band that was the biggest band in the world. Add onto that kids viewing your music and lyrics as being somehow a voice, that you were and are speaking for them and their generation, that must have been an incredibly tough thing to deal with.
Read some interviews with Ed around that time, 1994. Ed has mnay times said that he was headed down the same road as kurt, that it was just pure luck that he made it out.

Sorry my friend, but I respectfully disagree. Around the second half of the 1970's, there was a band called Joy Division and a guy named Ian Curtis (the singer of the aforementioned band).

  • Everybody has an opinion on polls like this. When I hear greatest musician, I assume that means a musician with a great deal of technical ability. So I wouldn't have Kurt, John or Paul on the list. Any 12 year old can play the Nirvana Catalogue on guitar. Kurt made a living by ripping off The Pixies, and he would be the first person to tell you. George Martin(The 5th Beatle) had as much to do with The Beatles sound as anybody. The Beatles didn't even play any of their complex songs live(or anything live after 1966). We all have our favorites. The Beatles were great songwriters and The White Album is one of my favorite albums. Great musicians like Miles Davis and Bela Fleck would cry reading this thread.

Obviously you are ignorant and have no idea how the mind works (or doesn’t work) when in a state of extreme depression….do you really think cowardice or bravery come into play with suicide? Also, let us not forget his heroine addiction…not that it’s an excuse…but who are we to judge?
