I was waiting for the sarcasm when I opened up this thread...
He did have some nice shining moments, but also quite a bit of mediocrity. Sorry.

Not his fault that people labelled him as the "spokesman of his generation" and thought of him as basically the second coming of Christ, especially since he never wanted to be the spokesman for anything. As a musician, no, he isn't the best, but as a songwriter, he's very skilled. Overrated? Possibly. I don't see how he couldn't be, with the way some people revere him. But I don't understand how anybody could call him "mediocre". Ah well, different strokes, I guess.
thats a bold statement, and he has some very good competition for that title.
no one is the greatest, but maybe the best/greatest in there genre/field etc

You're paraphrasing me. I said much of his material was mediocre; not that he was mediocre as a musician (or a musian ). Seriously: Kiss Kiss Molly's Lips...
We're all biased here, but Nirvana could never touch Pearl Jam, except maybe in the drummer dept.

The minute one might say something like that, you can't help but thinking in
John Lennon
and then immediately comes to mind
Bob Dylan, and then
Neil YOung, and then
Roger Waters, and then
Pete Towsnhend, and then
of course Beethoven, but then again, you can't think of
Duke Ellington, and then
the GREAR DAvid Bowie...
and this does not end.
etc. etc. etc.
