Not his fault that people labelled him as the "spokesman of his generation" and thought of him as basically the second coming of Christ, especially since he never wanted to be the spokesman for anything. As a musician, no, he isn't the best, but as a songwriter, he's very skilled. Overrated? Possibly. I don't see how he couldn't be, with the way some people revere him. But I don't understand how anybody could call him "mediocre". Ah well, different strokes, I guess.

thats a bold statement, and he has some very good competition for that title.

You're paraphrasing me. I said much of his material was mediocre; not that he was mediocre as a musician (or a musian  ). Seriously: Kiss Kiss Molly's Lips...

We're all biased here, but Nirvana could never touch Pearl Jam, except maybe in the drummer dept.

but Dave Grohl, IMHFO, is the greatest living drummer around

He was great, but not the best of all time. There should not be such a distinction in music. It diminishes too many others.

When i was a kid and the adults in my life would talk about how The Beatles or Elvis revolutionized music at there time periods. I would always roll my eyes, probably because of how many times i heard it, the first time i heard Nirvana, i understood. I knew half way into Smells like Teen Spirit, everything had changed and that was before i ever heard the word Grunge or of a band named Pearl Jam.

So that what Kurt means to me.

Say what you will about Kurt Cobain or 'Nirvana'... I believe that Nirvana, primarily due to 'Nevermind', will remain a fixture in the story of Rock and Roll for a long, long time. That one record changed the course on popular music... for all we know, the Hair Bands of the late 80s would have progressed through the mid-90s or beyond.
Greatest musician... I don't think so. Huge impact on the music world... most definately.

no need to diss Kurt people...he was a good guy...a bit fucked up, but who isn't?....and he's gone now...so respect the dead, man!

but yeah....he is definitwly not the greatest of all time...that's just stupid...and he would of told you that himself i bet!

    thats a big claim

indeed it is. nirvana are my favourite band and have been for a while and as much as i love his work i dont think kurt is the greatest musician of all time.

just the other day i heard sliver on the radio and it was such a breath of fresh air... it was like a little toy surprise amongst the usual stuff that makes me go blaech. i mean the songs about a little boy whose tummy hurts who just wants to go home... how cool. 8-)

I love Nirvana + Kurt Cobain - heard them and they led me towards PJ and a lot of other good music
Nirvana and Kurt Cobain's talent shouldn't be tarnished or tainted because of how his life ended. That was his choice and I don't think anyone will understand how he felt or did understand.

as to this Greatest Musician - I mean MUSIAN  - business
how do we define who the Greatest Musician is? technical skill? songwriting? personality? style? amount of MTV awards? Grammys? Concerts? Cds sold? Units shifted? the list goes on and on
i know it's all personal opinion but imo there can't be just ONE who is the best, there are loads who are AMAZING. Choosing the best musician is like choosing one of your children as a favourite or something. Every musician is different and so they can't be compared like that.

I say, watch the 'Live At Reading' DVD and draw your own conclusions about how great that little band from Seattle was.
