i think it just came down to experience. girardi already had the head coaching title... mattingly did not.

Donnie Baseball ran out of pitchers and had to call the game while managing in the Arizone Fall League.
This on top of...
Not noticing a team batting out of order during a spring training game and walking off and back on the mound and having to take his closer out of the game which resulted in a loss.
I love Mattingly as much as everyone but I think we can all be thankful Cashman and the Steinbrenners picked Girardi over him.
Fuck That, i want Donny B.0 -

Agreed. The New York Yankees is not really the place to learn on the job.
Don't know. Good question. Xavier should be able to get it.0 -

Buck Showalter, but he was managing in the system for at least five years before getting the job following the 1991 season. Stump Merrill and Bucky Dent as well, but those guys were stop gaps until the Yankees could get their act together.
Ralph Houk also. He might be similar to Mattingly. He played parts of eight seasons with the Yankees and coached the previous three seasons (1958-1960) before taking the job. Houk also managed the Tigers, Red Sox and also became a Yankee GM in the mid-1960s.
Dick Howser, but he was a third base coach for a decade before getting 1980. Gene Michael and Lou Piniella also were first-time skippers and in Lou's case, there was a Lou 2 because Billy 5 ended prematurely in 1988.Reading 2004

The CEO of the Texas Rangers called New York Yankees fans "violent," "apathetic" and "an embarrassment" for their behavior during the American League Championship Series in an interview on Monday with ESPN Radio in Dallas.
Responding to a question about Rangers fans' demeanor during the postseason, Chuck Greenberg digressed into a critique of Yankees fans which included an unflattering characterization.
"I think our fans have been great," Greenberg said on the "Ben and Skin Show" on 103.3 KESN. "I think particularly in Game 3 of the World Series they just blew away anything I've seen in any venue during the postseason. I thought Yankee fans, frankly, were awful. They were either violent or apathetic, neither of which is good. So I thought Yankee fans were by far the worst of any I've seen in the postseason. I thought they were an embarrassment."
Greenberg praised Rangers fans for backing their team in Game 2 of the ALCS after having blown Game 1 at home, in which they took a 5-0 lead only to lose to the Yankees 6-5.
"I thought where our fans were really amazing was in Game 2 against the Yankees," he said. "Because Game 1 was a real gut wrencher, you know, it was a tough way to lose. I thought our fans were spectacular and you'd be amazed how much our players picked up on that passion and enthusiasm."
Previously, Kristin Lee, the wife of Rangers pitcher Cliff Lee, had said that Yankees fans cursed her, spat at her and threw beer at her while her husband was shutting down the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium.
The Rangers went on to win the series in six games and currently trail the San Francisco Giants, three games to one, in the World Series with Lee pitching in Game 5 Monday night in Arlington.
Yankees president Randy Levine declined to comment in a statement issued through a spokesperson: "At this time, we are honoring the commissioner's policy regarding respecting and not distracting from the World Series."0 -

The time has come already
If he wins the job I am reading they will look for him to catch about 100 games. I still hear he is a pretty horrible catcher but it can't get worse than Posada at this point I guess. A DH/Catcher platoon of those two could be pretty solid though.0
