Camper Van Beethoven - Pictures of Matchstick Men (Status Quo)
Johhny Cash - Rusty Cage (Soundgarden)

I already loved the original versions of all of these songs but I think the covers are much better
I can't believe that I forgot Ryan Adams' version of "Time (The Revelator)" by Gillian Welch, a great Crazy Horse-style cover of an already great song.

I'm saying this with the disclaimer that I smoked a shit ton of weed this weekend and when I heard this at 2am last night I was far from sober. I also realize this is more of a collaboration than a cover.

I don't remember the original artist on all of these...omitting Hendrix covering anyone as he ripped the head off whatever he was covering and made it his own.

Susan Tedeschi - Don't Think Twice It's Alright (Dylan)
Susan Tedeschi - Angel from Montgomery (John Prine)
    Ray Charles - Georgia
Black Crowes - Hard to Handle (Otis Redding)
    Allman Brothers - Statesboro Blues
Ben Harper - The Drugs Don't Work
Michael Jackson - aint no sunshine (he was 12 if you've never heard it....be prepared)
    Eddie Vedder - Hard Sun
Mindy Smith - Jolene (Dolly Parton)
Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold (Sting)
Annie Fitzgerald - Heavenly Day (Patty Griffin)
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes - Annie's Song
Jeff Buckley - Mama You've Been on My Mind (Dylan)
Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends
Madeleine Peyroux - Careless Love (Bessie Smith)
Shawn Colvin - You're Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go (Dylan)
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Little Wing

I'll flip it a bit, and say that Gillian Welch's cover of Black Star is as good (maybe not better) than the orignal by Radiohead.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Not better than the original but phish doing while my guitar gently weeps is fucking incredible. That is one of the best songs in the history of music though so you can't top it.

    Totally.

I'm also going to go out on a limb here and confess something:

I love, love, love Manfred Mann's "Blinded By The Light" (that guitar solo is fucking ace)...I think it completely eclipses Springsteen's version. Sorry Bruce, but it had to be said.

    great call.

I agree -- with both choices.

Nobody sings this song like Bryan Ferry does.
With all due respect to Bryan Ferry and his attempt to sing the song, he just doesn't match the passion and pain John sings the song with. Not many, if any, singer-songwriters dig deep down in themselves and writes a song like this and matches it with the pain they were feeling when they wrote the song. Nothing can come close to the original.
