Columbus, Oh. The LC Pavilion. Little concert venue that has capabilities for indoor or outdoor shows using the same stage. Saw them there 2 years ago outdoors. Good time.

It's great having the material, but I think 20 tunes is too much for Croweology, too much for one listen anyway. Everything just blends together a little too much.

It's not really Luther's finest hour and it kinda highlights for me why people still point to the Marc Ford eras as the best.I'm pretty sure Luther cant hang with MF and takin the electric outta his hands makes it more apparent. This is coming from somebody that likes the new stuff stuff as much as anything they've done. In his defense classic rock style lead isn't his thing so it's prolly as much bad song selection by Chris and Rich as anything.

Luther is a perfect fit for them for the direction they have taken with Warpaint and BTF/UTF. But I don't like his tone on the older songs. He can play the notes and that's great, but he doesn't get that searing, overdriven, Strat sound that Marc gets. I think you nailed it though with the lead style comment - he isn't from a classic rock background.

I am not sure how Marc would have worked on the newer stuff or if it would have ended up like it did. When he left the second time they basically scrapped a whole album's worth of ideas and came up with fresh ones for Warpaint. Guess we will never know.

Marc has been and always will be one of my all time favorite players, but I like Luther a lot and think he fits the band.

Definitely dig what he does on the newer stuff. I'm also glad he doesn't just slap a jcm800 into his rig for Ford-era stuff, and puts his own flavor on it instead.

I agree he fits the band for what they are doin now, and they are aging alot better than their peers as far as new music goes. It seems to really have a natural flow to it. Not like SOME band we all know and love(and gather around here for).

You guys have both pointed out the great, and crucial differences between Marc and Luther. They're both incredible players int heir own right...and they both have different styles and flavors.

I definitely agree that Luther is probably the best pick the brothers could've made for the direction that they've taken from 2007 forward...Marc however, made a huge contribution to putting the Crowes on the map, where they've been...and will remain to be for years to come.

I don't think Luther has ever tried to fill Marc's shoes, but taking over lead guitar duties in The Black Crowes isn't exactly a small job...and I respect, and give Luther huge props for being successful, and effectively infusing his own style, sound, and presence into the band.

  • Went to opening night of the tour on Friday in Milwaukee. All I can say, is that everyone who gets a chance to see the acoustic/electric shows are in for a treat! Great energy from start to finish and Chris' voice sounded stronger than ever. There was something for every Crowes fan. Old songs, new songs, greatest hits, extended jams, solos, etc. Acoustic set highlights for me were Remedy(opener), She Talks to Angels(holy shit! Chris fuckin' nailed it!) Whoa Mule, and My Morning Song. During MMS, it truly felt like Chris was the preacher, and the crowd was his congregation! During the electric set, highlights for me were Progress Jam/Thorn, and the high energy I Ain't Hidin'/Jealous Again/No Speak No Slave/Hard to Handle ending that left the crowd wanting more, even after 3 hrs!

If it is truly the last time I get to see The Crowes live, I'd have to say they are definatley going out like champions. Enjoy the shows fellas!

We had a really long thread going about them for awhile, but I guess we migrated to this one!

I hate visiting any board related to the Crowes. Most of them bitch more than PJ fans.

I saw that set on Facebook and was blown away. You got a killer show!!

I can't wait. I am seeing them three nights in a row in September. The first show is the acoustic/electric split set. The next two are electric only.
