He punched a 170 lbs female, age undetermined at that time, who was actively assaulting him while he was arresting another person. ...there's a huge difference in your above description, and what occurred.
 example: i've read on here...
"why didn't he call for back up?" --- he did, i saw him use his radio with my own two eyes.
example: they're teenagers... teens who are out of control wrestling a police officer.
the one young gal that got popped is a big girl and she assaulted him with force while he already had his hands full with her dumbass friend.
this is purely disrespect to the police officer.
When does he call for back up? At what point? I didn't see it.
Don't you think the officer is a little out of control as well? He is caught in a situation going back and forth with two teenagers who he can't control on his own.... Why wouldn't he call for back up? Why wouldn't he just mace them?
I didn't see the girls swing at him...They tried pushing his hands down and resisting arrest, but not attack him... If he felt threaten then he should have moved to a neutral position, so that he had a clear view of everyone, but instead he took it upon himself to rumble with everyone around him.... someone could have easily taken his gun!
This was a stupid situation and now the department will probably have to suffer because of this.... not only that but the officer could never really restrain the girls... its an embarrassment for the department and will probably have to fork out some money because of this.....
But you guys think it was the rational thing to do.... Yeah keep thinking like that and I'm sure a few more unprofessional incidents like this and Seattle will be broke! Because of law suites ....0

What occurred in the video was a police officer punched a girl.... and you have no problem with that because you have no problem with punching a girl in the face!
I have a problem with it because I don't feel females should be punched in the face by any man in any situation.
The officer put himself in a poor situation clearly unable to handle the situation because if the girls wanted to really hurt him they would have easily taken his gun or hit the officer from behind.... But no you refuse to see that because your first reaction is to protect the police officers actions, regardless of the situation....
 What a Joke!0

Think about it from a logical perspective... let's remove gender from the equation and see what we get.
 ...
 Officer witnesses two persons jay-walking.
Officer tells subjects that they will be receiving a traffic citation in violation of Penal Code XXXX2345.
 Subjects refuse.
What should the cop do... let them go? Do his job?
 Subjects refuse to submit...
 forcing officer to detain.
 Subjects resist detainment...
 forcing officer to restrain.
Subjects continue to struggle to resist restraint...
forcing officer to select 'use of force' to subdue the subjects... in order to restrain them.
First order of force... fist. After that, mace, taser, nightstick, service firearm.
 ...
Add the potentially hostile environment that is developing... a crowd begins to form.
The best bet is to retrain the subjects in handcuffs and secured in the back seat of the patrol car.
The best way to apply the handcuffs is the standing position, rather than wrestling the subject to the ground, where your head is closer to someone's hostile foot. Lose your head, when someone treats it as a soccer ball, means you may lose your gun... lose your gun and you may lose your life.
 ...
 Moral of the story:

While I agree that I would not hit a woman first, there are a few circumstance that I would hit a woman back. If she tried to hit the jewels, or if she continued to hit me in the face. Oh yeah I wold punch a woman.96 Randall's Island II

You train for these types of things ....act professionally, represent the community,.... take control of the situation,...Show strength, ...and protect the community....
Just a question, have you watched the extended and uncut version of the incident or just the three minute version? If you have only watched the three minute version you may want to watch the longer one. It can be found here: http://www.kirotv.com/video/23904902/index.html
Both girls committed assault on the officer. They both laid hands on him in a threatening and hostile manner. Moreover, at 00:20 black-shirt girl slapped and pushed the officer. Pink-shirt girl then pushed the officer at 00:25; she followed that by pushing the officer which then prompted the officer to punch her. Each of these escalating events, excluding the officers punch, constitutes assault.
 FROM: http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictiona ... nd+Battery
Two separate offenses against the person that when used in one expression may be defined as any unlawful and unpermitted touching of another. Assault is an act that creates an apprehension in another of an imminent, harmful, or offensive contact. The act consists of a threat of harm accompanied by an apparent, present ability to carry out the threat. Battery is a harmful or offensive touching of another.
You keep coming back to the fact that the officer shouldn't have punched a girl. I don't think anyone in this thread is advocating that people should just go out and randomly punch women in the face. But as I already said:Fifthelement wrote:. . .at that point the officer was not dealing with a woman; he was dealing with someone who just physically assaulted an armed officer of the law. He did what was necessary. He struck her once to stun her and then barreled into her to throw her off balance and prevent a subsequent attack from her. By asserting control over the situation in a firm and unexpected manner he was thankfully prevented from having to use a more aggressive method of control.
All-in-all, the officer did exactly what you said he should have done . . . "take control of the situation,...Show strength, ...and protect the community....""What the CANUCK happened?!? - Esquimalt Barber Shop0

The girl who got punched pushed the officer...I hope she was arrested, too...
And the I hope the soon-to-farmer never needs to call those fn cops, cuz you know, they all suck, fo reals...
I'm not trying to stir anything up..... but if your daughter or sister was getting in my face and pushing me....would it be ok for me to punch her? Knock her ass out?
Or what it have been cool for the police officer to shoot her?
if you were a police officer who was arresting some else, then I would have no problem with you attempting to do you job...
as for shooting her...I ask, did he shoot her...? the answer is no...I think you're being dramatic and naive. And that you're not looking at the situation for what it was...a police officer was attempting to arrest a combative person and another person put hands on and tried to push the officer...the officer responded...plain and simple...0

watch the video again...he did call for back up...
And I love you're critique of the officers performance...he should have this and should have that...
I'll say this, he did remarkably well given the circumstances...he could have easily tossed her to the ground and really done some physical harm to the fine, upstanding lady he was trying to arrest...in fact, I'm guessing he could have picked her up and slammed her to the ground...I'm sure the crowd would have loved that...

personally, i'd like to know what happened prior to the camera showing up on the scene. i wonder if opinions would change if it came out that he was simply going to give them a warning about jaywalking and was greeted with attitude.
one thing i've known for a very long time: never ever ever put your hands on an officer, even just a pat on the shoulder. these girls were grabbing him and pushing him. imo, i think he let them get away with a hell of a lot more than any other officer might have before he got really physical.
 oh, and i also like that every officer that talked to the guy with the camera said "you can keep filming all you want, just keep back about 5 feet from the cruisers."9/1/00, 9/2/00, 9/3/00, 12/31/00, 3/2/01, 4/29/01, 6/21/01, 7/25/01, 8/31/01, 9/1/01, 9/2/01, 4/18/02, 8/30/02, 8/31/02, 8/31/02, 9/1/02, 9/22/02, 3/22/03, 5/6/03, 6/29/03, 8/29/03, 8/30/03, 8/30/03, 8/31/03, 2/21/04, 4/2/04, 4/3/04, 9/3/04, 9/4/04, 9/4/04, 9/5/04, 2/19/05, 7/22/05, 9/2/05, 9/3/05, 9/3/05, 9/4/05, 1/22/06, 6/7/06, 9/1/06, 9/2/06, 9/2/06, 9/3/06, 7/6/07, 8/31/07, 9/1/07, 9/1/07, 9/2/07, 3/7/08, 8/29/08, 8/30/08, 8/30/08, 8/31/08, 7/11/09, 6/4/10, 6/11/110

You obviously can reason with daily situations all by yourself coming up with real correct data gathered.
