Epic means out of the ordinary for all intents and purposes when it's mentioned here regarding setlists. It can also mean impressive, but that's a matter of opinion. Meaty setlist and crowd energy aren't out of the ordinary which is why I mentioned that other shows have had more obscure offerings.
and Newark is still becoming pretty IMPRESSIVE!
wowowowowowoooww
yeah, but not to get into an arguement over weak crowds, but there def. sounds like there has been some duds of late (from fanviews in the forum). even the band's energy has gone up and down. so it seems other cities aren't a guarantee like NYC is. that's been proven 6 straight MSG shows.
'98 you had the breath campaign. epic.
'03 marathon night 1. curfew breaking. dvd. epic.
'08 ace frehley/black diamond. epic.
msg 08 wasn't epic at all. Most people laughed or boo'ed when ace came out. Why do you think mike got on the mic and said come on everyone its ace frehley of kiss, ahhhhh fuck me. I woulda rather seen warren hayes with pj and them do a grateful dead cover then do black diamond with ace.
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight
Sammi: Wanna just break up?
"Epic" is the most overused word on the message board... and the most annoying one too!
as annoying as +1? I used the word because I agree that it's annoying. Sorry you couldn't tell that. Now I'm off to bed after reviewing Newark... which is BY FAR BETTER THAN ANYTHING COMING LATER THIS WEEK!
knew you were being sarcastic, wasn't really refering to you anyway... I know what " " means. Hope you got some sleep, you seems a little grouchy! j/k
"I knew all the rules, but the rules did not know me. Guaranteed."
aside from 98
the best shows usually happen elsewhere
plus, MSG sound isnt all that great
whats makes MSG special is the energy of the crowd and its location-seeing PJ in the heart of NYC is spectacular in and of itself-regardless of the songs played
EDIT:
the only thing more annoying than the word "epic" is when people refer to the band as the "boys"
god I hate that
MSG is epic because its where Wrestlemania 1 was held. Nothing can beat that!
MSG 08's were totally overrated going into them and after them.
MSG 03 2 > 1
This year though I will be in the first 3 rows for both shows and that REALLY plays a huge part on how you feel about the show- especially with the interaction of the band like them giving you stuff or acknowledging you.
The most energy I ever felt, making it one the most epic of my 33 was Milan 06 with the crowd clapping after Black ended- an unbelievable surge of chills that I dont see ever being topped.
Also, I think NY's are just proud people, we WANT the best shows.
"The world is dangerous, feel safe here tonight..." EV 9/17/06
38+6 shows at the age of 27 and counting...but still no Undone
EDIT:
the only thing more annoying than the word "epic" is when people refer to the band as the "boys"

I have probably been guilty of this one in the past, but I agree.
While we're on the topic, a peeve of mine is when people during the setlist threads post a whole string of overblown emoticons in response to a song that's not really all that "epic".... i.e., played quite often
For example:
NOT FOR YOU!!!! WITH MODERN GIRL TAG!!!!
Um, yeah. Its a good song, but damn. Maybe I just get jaded.
msg has always had solid, meaty setlists. mix that with the band's energy, crowd's energy and yeah... you have a pretty epic show.
i've never asked for first time songs/openers, etc. like you mentiond. just want a SOLID setlist with TONS of energy. and all but maybe one MSG (9/10/98 comes to mind) show has delivered.
i'm probably in the minority... but look at the 2003 MSG shows. i would take night # 2's setlist over night # 1's anyday.
I agree specifically about combining what is usually a very good LONG setlist with the bands energy they love playing their,... and the crowds energy... some of the best crowds have been MSG crowds...
9-11-98.... 7-8-03 he had it right... other than that 1st msg 98 show... every other one has been pretty awesome...
THat being said... I did think the 2008 MSG shows kicked ass... but were rather NORMAL setlist wise... they were long... but i think alot of the setlists from this small tour have eclipsed MSG 08... but Id say just about every MSG show does end up being "EPIC" which is by the way the most over used word on this board! haha
I have been to ten shows, including one at MSG in 2003. And if i were to rank all my shows in order, that show would be ranked somewhere 8-10, no lie. I think all of the shows in cities like NYC, Philly, Chicago, Boston, etc get all this hype, mainly from people who live in those places and don't think there is life outside their big city, and a lot of these fans don't realize how amazing this band can be on a weekday night in the midwest/south/overseas, etc. It's really too bad, because a lot of these fans in these big cities, think we don't know what were missing, but the truth is, they have no idea what they are missing.

I have seen them 17 times, and Even Flow still does it for me.
MSG = epic always. ;-)
Thank you for saying this! Even Flow is one of the best songs live.
I don't really love the competition about which shows are the best and which are "epic" anymore... every show is epic for somebody, and shows that have literally changed my life have been regarded by some as mediocre.

im torn on this thread... i agree that to a certain individual one show is EPIC to them and is not EPIC to a diff person... god i hate that fricken word! haha
I also agree that the band brings amazing energy every show whether is in St Louis or Boston or pHilly or NY ...
HOWEVER...
MSG BOSTON n PHILLY shows... you can be in denial if you want but facts are facts... they consistently get UNBELIEVABLE Shows every tour... this years BOSTON SHOW ( Monday nights ) was unreal...
Boston 06 - Leash and Ed said the 1st boston show was one of the best crowds ever...
Boston 03 - 3 shows... 95 songs acoustic sets...
We all saw the 4 shows PHILLY got to close down the spectrum... the last 2 specifically were mind blowing...
And MSG has had some amazing shows also... 9-11-98 , Both 2003 MSG shows were awesome... definetely not overrated as the above quote says... IMO...
And also... the FANS/CROWDS of the northeast are the loudest By FAR... and i think... I know the Band and Ed specifically notices that and that also makes a difference in the show. When I say Northeast, I also mean Hartford and Buffalo and stuff too as far as the crowds goes... no idea what happend with the NEWARD Crowd last night... guess everyone was still hungover from Boston.

I don't really feel that I am in denial, because I have actually been to a show at MSG, and find it to be overrated. Obviously Pearl Jam went above and beyond in Philly last year, and in Boston in 2003 and this year, but my point is that a lot of people who have only been to shows in one area of the country, and think that they get the best shows, might not be fully appreciating what the band does night-in-night-out. I have travelled deep in into Ontario, as far as east as NYC and far west as Chicago, so at least I can relate my experience, and as I said, the show I saw in MSG ranks as one of my bottom shows. That doesn't mean it was a bad show, it just means at least 7 of the 10 shows I have been to were more enjoyable for me, and are bootlegs I return to more often.
It's all an opinion thing of course, but I think what some people dont understand, is how old and annoying it gets to see people from NYC or Boston acting like they are the center of the universe about everything, be it music or sports or whatever, to the solid majority of us who don't live there, don't care that we don't live there, and probably won't ever live there.

hahaha, "jamily" is a close second
haha this morning on the local radio station the two DJs were playing word association with current events, and the first one goes, "pearl jam concert" and the second one goes, "epic." hahaha
I have always HATED "jamily." Glad that one kind of died out.

Anyway, there's nowhere I'd rather be than MSG.
I am with you on this one. I have said before that I could care less what they play. They could play row, row, your boat and it would still be a rocking good time for me and I would sing along at the top of my lungs and come out smiling from ear to ear because I just experienced the best live band sing it.
i bet msg 1 set may not be as good as newark, but everytime i have seen pj on their last show of tour leg its always good only saw them 2 time to end leg, holmdel 03 and state college 03 but both were amazing especialy state college. sc is my favorite show still out of 31 shows. ny night 2 should be really good i wouldnt be shocked if they play till midnight. fuck curfew when you got cash right? play till 12:30 or somethin lol no where else to go friday night
...Up until this past weekend I would have agreed with you. For the first time ever, I was seriously bummed out by the set list at Hartford. However, for me it wasn't an issue of rarities vs. hits. It was an issue of the show not having a certain energy. I felt like the set list at Hartford was just boring, like it just didn't work out the way eddie expected it to. It had something to do with Jeremy and Daughter, but not necessarily because they're hits, but because they just seem like some of their less exciting live songs. ...
You call Daughter a less exciting live song ????? Haven't heard a bigger blunder for a long time...
Daughter on "Live on two legs" is probably the best single live record of Pearl Jam ever, easily in top 10.

that one shocks me... i was at Hartford the consensus was that the energy was amazing... even ED mentioned it multiple times... that show rocked i thought was a great party!

I know I didn't get when mentioned that it was such a special show...I just didn't feel it at all. I've seen them 23 times, and that was the only time I felt disappointed.
But yeah I don't like Daughter live...of all the shows I've been to, I've only run out to use the bathroom during a set once, and it was during Daughter in Mountain View in 2003. I'm not the biggest fan of the more folky acoustic songs. I like them, but the rockers and/or the really powerful anthems do much more for me at show. As for Jeremy, I feel like they're playing that out of obligation or something sometimes, it's more of a sing-along. And nothingman and lowlight are just songs I've never really liked in general, and when they play them live it just feels flat to me and sort of a low point, so I was disappointed that the show contained all four of those songs. Also I was on the floor, in the second to last row in the first section. I've enjoyed the floor vibe at times, but I'm really short, and not only can I not really see the stage, I sort of feel like I'm in a hole, and the guy behind me kept poking my head with his arm and the guy next to me was really distracting and kept talking loudly with his friend or singling loudly in my ear, so in general, I think it just the wasn't best show for me. But that's ok, it was still good, and I've had so many amazing pearl jam shows, it doesn't bother me that I wasn't blown away by one.
You are right, MSG does not always = epic...It was SICK! It was not just the set list, but the energy was off the charts. I saw them on Tuesday in Newark and it was not in the same universe...
i was at newark and tonight msg and will be there tomorrow i like the newark setlist better but the energy at the garden was unbelievable if it had newarks setlist with that energy would have been the greatest show for me
Did anyone catch ev say something to the effect - you better bring it tomorrow? PJ was stellar and it was a good concert. Epic? Not by any means. You peeps better rock it out tomorrow or else. And if you did tonight, keep on keepin on!

i thought he said something you better bring it tomorrow night or come tomorrow night because you didnt hear anything yet

I'm thankful for every show I've been to, all the while realizing that I'm fortunate to get a chance to see the greatest band in the world. This is a band who gives all of themselves at EVERY show for the FANS. The setlist really shouldn't matter.
And nothingman and lowlight are just songs I've never really liked in general
Yikes really? Those were some main highlights of that show for me. Anyway the only complaint I had in Hartford was the amount of Backspacer. I said to my buddy during the encore after their 7th! BS song that if they play The Fixer I was gonna be kinda disappointed. And they did, and I couldn't help but feel a little bit bummed out. But the energy there was off the charts imo so I don't know where you were sitting but I was half way up the second section and it was still rockin up there!

Sammi: Wanna just break up?
haha this morning on the local radio station the two DJs were playing word association with current events, and the first one goes, "pearl jam concert" and the second one goes, "epic." hahaha
I have always HATED "jamily." Glad that one kind of died out.
I am with you on this one. I have said before that I could care less what they play. They could play row, row, your boat and it would still be a rocking good time for me and I would sing along at the top of my lungs and come out smiling from ear to ear because I just experienced the best live band sing it.

But that's ok, it was still good, and I've had so many amazing pearl jam shows, it doesn't bother me that I wasn't blown away by one.

i thought he said something you better bring it tomorrow night or come tomorrow night because you didnt hear anything yet
great room
great crowd energy
great time with the best rock n roll band on the planet
but Newark was musically better
and I hate the sound at MSG
Yikes really? Those were some main highlights of that show for me. Anyway the only complaint I had in Hartford was the amount of Backspacer. I said to my buddy during the encore after their 7th! BS song that if they play The Fixer I was gonna be kinda disappointed. And they did, and I couldn't help but feel a little bit bummed out. But the energy there was off the charts imo so I don't know where you were sitting but I was half way up the second section and it was still rockin up there!
