  • he was sitting next to my wife and i at the 2nd msg show and was surprised we travelled all the way from uk to see pearl jam,he admired our dedication!
im not a fan of coldplay at all and are very hyped up in the uk but what a gentleman he was and what impressed me is that he knew most of the pj songs rocking out to most of the set.
    COYS!
  • I've seen Coldplay several times, the last two of those being for free. The first was their free Brixton Academy gig where Chris accidentally broke a 1966 Gibson ES335 and then gave it to me! The second time was a couple months later at a BBC Radio gig in front of 250 people. Because there was no big stage set-up we actually got a bit of spontaneity from them. They're a good live band and they've gotten better, but I agree about the fact that they should be putting on longer gigs. I enjoy the music and all that, but I won't be going to any of their £50 per ticket (not GA!!) gigs here in December. It's just a bit too predictable and over-produced.

Oh and here's a photo of me with the guitar if anyone's curious.

I hate this attitude around here. This guy says something praising PJ and you gotta be negative and knock him.
Most people on here think it's cool to knock bands that have a hint of mainstream in them.
No wonder people hate PJ fans.

Wouldn't surprise me if 90% of The Who/Tom Petty/Neil Young/etc fans hate PJ
    Like a word misplaced...nothing said...what a waste

    coldplay is good band
first two records were great and the third was pretty good
the "new" one is just awful though-very disappointing

lose the production Chris and go back to writing cool melodies

I dislike Coldplay, not because it's 'cool' to hate them at the moment (i didn't realize this)... I just dislike them because I don't prefer their music. To me a lot of it sounds the same and I just don't really like the vibe I get when I hear them. I saw them on SNL the other night and thought it was kind of corny and the song they played first kind of annoys me, mostly because it sounds similar to one of their earlier hits. I respect them as musicians and I understand the appeal, I just don't care for them musically.

I don't mind coldplay, just Chris Martin is so annoying to watch when performing.
  • That's a nice thing of Chris Martin to say, although I've never been a Coldplay fan. Nothing to do with 'being trendy' or whatever, they just don't appeal to me (similar reason to the one I gave in the Counting Crows thread - too miserable and mopey for me). I've just had a thought that may have unfortunately negative implications for the greatness of my favourite band: should I trust the judgement of an individual who named their child after a fruit? :D

Maybe just me, but I think the reason people "hate" Coldplay is because they're so over-exposed (not unlike U2) and they're marketed as this god-like band because their music appeals (read...can be sold to) a very wide range of people....when in reality, they're not a good live band and in general their music all sounds the same.....(again, just my opinion)....

we need more rock bands and less PR driven Coldplays.....
  • my girlfriend talked me into going to see coldplay live. i didn't want to but she has gone to many concerts for me. i really really enjoyed it. it was great. ended up seeing them again a few months later (with fiona apple who i like a lot). i even enjoy listening to them now. the last cd was very good.

That's not very fair. Why should everyone like the same bands? Why should we all like Coldplay? Allow people to like what they want...even if it IS just Pearl Jam, which probably means they have some kind of problem and deserve kindness rather than derision.

i used to have the elitist attitude that nothing is ever gonna be as good as pj. i just started getting into other bands in the past year and am blown away by what ive been missing. the same people that have such an elitist attitude are the same ones that sat down and wouldnt even applaud my morning jacket back in 2006.

im just saying there is other really good music out there besides pearl jam and that people should open up their minds.
  • I was the same way. Thought no one could compare to pearl jam and wouldn't give any other band a listen. Bad mistake by me. I have found numerous bands that I find as enjoyable as pearl jam.

    1. Incubus
    2. Idlewild
    3. Coheed and freaking Cambria - my goodness people give this band a chance. Some of the most complex and intriguing guitar parts I have ever heard. Also, by far the most nicest band I have ever met.

I REALLY don't care for this band...who needs a pretentious rip-off band whose lead singer sounds just like Geddy Lee from Rush? No thank you.
