I kind went scratched my head when I heard about this but whatever I guess. I'm a fairly new fan so I guess it really doesn't bother me too much.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.
  • You know... I guess I can't blame them for making a quick buck. Can't say I wouldn't do the same.

But I tend to think taking advantage of quick popularity will end their 15 minutes that much sooner.

When their original fanbase goes away (made with the 1st three albums) because of this change, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Hope I'm wrong, but think this is kinda the beginning of the end for these guys. The next album will tell.

I'm gonna hold out on passing judgment until I hear it.

They're good musicians and will hopefully do something creative that'll appeal to they're diehards and they're newer fans.

    I'll try to be open-minded.

Name me 5 bands that have allowed their album to be remixed by R&B and rap-metal producers?

You liked the band when they had long hair and looked Rock and Roll?

You like the first two albums and the EP? How do you explain "California Waiting"? That song is PURE pop rock.
    1. B'OB has produced with PJ since 1993, and,
    2. Eddie had a mohawk before that. Did you expect him to let his hair grow back uneven?

As much as they've sold out image wise. Why wouldn't you let famous and acclaimed artists remix your music. That's easy money for KOL. If it sucks it's not KOL's fault since they didn't do the remixes.

according to this KOL are influenced by Radiohead for their new album...what a trendy thing to say. Radiohead does remix work, but they never sold out of changed their whole style to get played on Top 40. So KOL fail

  • I read an interview of Caleb a few days back and he made a remark along the lines : "We toured with the Strokes and i thought they were very cool...and then saw some pictures of them with Timberlake and didn't like it...but now i get it..we are all musicians (or something like that) !

I don't think it's a trendy thing to say. Trendy would be saying you were influenced by Animal Collective or MGMT

This is ridiculous. If they wanna do a remix album who cares???? All I know is that I really dig KOL's music. I could give a fuck who is listening to it and what radio station is playing their songs.

Radiohead is still the trendy band to follow. It's like when Avril Levine and Miley Cyrus claim that they are their favorite band. They are the one band you can claim to like and follow to show others you are deep into music. Radiohead seems to be that one band that nobody has a bad word about- like even if you don't like their music, you don't say they suck because they are so widely regarded that someone might put you in your place. This is why bands like Kings of Leon use their name, it's why Avril Levine says they are her favorite band: it's makes their otherwise meaningless music more meaningful. Kings of Leon saying that Radiohead are their influence for their new album all of a sudden makes their new album sound more exciting and musically relevant.

Or maybe they actually mean that one of the songs was influenced by Radiohead.

Trent Reznor, from a very recent (couple days ago) interview with eyeweekly:
I really have no personal issue with Chris at all,” he begins. “The thing I said on Twitter… it goes deeper than what have may appeared on the surface. We were on [Interscope]. And I have had Jimmy Iovine, the president of that label, come up to me on every record from With Teeth onwards saying I should do some sort of urban thing — it was Timbaland for a while, then it was Pharrell for a while — because ‘that’s how you sell records.’ The idea seemed so preposterous and insulting.

"I’m not talking about ‘let’s go make a record with Dr. Dre,’ because that would be kind of cool. What he’s talking about is making your record sound like what’s on the radio, whether it’s appropriate or not. And that’s what Chris did. I think that when somebody who is respected like he is goes that route, it sends the message that it’s OK to give up any kind of core values you had to be the fashion of the moment. I don’t think that’s OK. I think it’s harmful. If I have one major fight in the world of the music business, it’s trying to keep art first and commerce second.”

I can't be arsed to go through this entire thread, but I'll give my general thoughts.....

So I'm watching KOL from Reading (they headlined a few hours ago and I recorded it while I was out). They sound as good as ever, great vocals, the older stuff sounds as good as always.

The last album, in my opinion, should have been an Ep - songs like Revelry, 17, I Want You and Be Somebody, were weak compared to the rest of the album. If you took those songs out it would have been wicked, and still would have sold shit loads of copies.

What shocks me most is the audience they draw over here in the UK. I've always seen them as a rock band, so I was a tad shocked when I saw them, and 90% of their audience was comprised of NME-loving, Indie wankers. By far the worst audience I've been a part of.

I couldn't care less who has remixed their music. Pearl Jam worked with Cypress Hill before. Cornell with Timbaland and Linkin Park. I'm sure NIN has been remixed by people who wouldn't be deemed cool.

As far as I see it, they are just riding the wave, yeah they've gotten more commercial as they've gone along, but I think a lot of that has been down to the fact that they've gotten better as song writers and musicians.

Finally, those who lump Because Of The Times in as newer, and therefore not as good, are crazy! Arizona is easily one of their best songs, along with songs like Black Thumbnail, Fans and Knocked Up. Then you've got stuff like Closer, Cold Desert and Manhattan from the latest record - all top draw stuff.

Anybody remember when Pearl Jam did a song with Cypress Hill?

I'm not going to judge the dudes off of one album that focused on drawing a larger audience. They spent a bunch of years not making a ton of cash. That puts a band in the position of actually having to get real jobs.

i'll give them time and have faith that they will remain honest to themselves.

Ever since Aerosmith and Run DMC worked together in the 80s there have been crossovers like this. PJ worked with Cypress Hill as part of a rap/rock crossover album. Rick Rubin ran a hip hip label and still made Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond cool for a whole new audience. Cornell has done his own thing and NIN have been remixed by a ton of people.

KOL's 'The Notion' ep has a CSS remix of The Bucket on it and I quite like it. I don't think it will have any effect on how their next studio album will sound and I'm interested to hear what the remixes will sound like
