Hence, the last full fan club arena show in Seattle was in 2000.
Same goes for Portland.
10C seniority wasn't used for the 2002 Key Arena shows, a limited number of tickets were made available to 10C members otherwise. the remainder of the tickets went on sale via Ticketmaster,...To quote the 10C from Newsletter #8: "Please understand we have a lot of members and it is very hard to please everybody. You're getting a little too picky, The Key Arena shows fit plenty of people, were announced well in advance and no one had trouble getting into them.
That to me constitutes a proper show.
I dont care how Ten Club allocated the tickets.0 -
The 2002 shows were regular shows. Just not regular 10c shows.
The 2nd show didn't even have 10c tickets and the first had about 1000 pairs randomly drawn (I scored row 5, my best at any pj show).
In 2000 only the first show had fan tix as well.
so its cool this time there are for both nights.
I still count the gorge shows at seattle shows. You've got half this bbs complaining that they don't get shows in the same state or a 12 hour drive, and people complain about a 2.5 hour drive. I've never seen a band do a show in seattle then do the gorge.. I really enjoyed shows at the gorge, so I wouldn't go back and trade them for key arena shows anyways.
The seattle shows are the closest to me (other than calgary, but I'd like to see a full setlist actualy pearl jam show).
hopefully i get tickets. I was at key arena in 2000, 2002, gorge in 05/06, may as well keep going to the seattle shows

If a band refuses to play a venue and then cant find any other venue to play at, isnt that having problems getting a place to play. its not like we are talking podunk town here. This is a major city. A major touring spot and the bands hometown. So yeah, they had trouble getting a place to play.
If Radiohead only decided to play venues that had environmentally sound LCD lighting, which isnt out of the question, wouldnt you say, radiohead had major problems getting a place to play?0 -
i live in eugene oregon. and portland is 1 to 1 and a half hours away. I dont drive, so I dont really pay attention to the time, when others are driving me. When PJ plays Portland I cant say "Pearl Jam is playing Eugene". Because they arent. They are playing at a venue thats an hour to 1 and a half hours away.
Same goes for Seattle. The Gorge isnt seattle. Its out of the way. It isnt hard to get a taxi to and around Seattle. Its hard to get a taxi to the Gorge. That tells you something.0 -

no....having a problem with 1 particular venue is completely different from finding a place to play.
They've had no problems being booked at Benaroya, the Crocodile, and the Showbox.0 -
the last seattle shows were 2000. plain and simple0

refusing to play/choosing to pass up the chance to play Key Arena when the opportunity presents itself and not being able to book Key Arena because of logistical/financial/production faults or troubles are two different scenarios,...

If I remember correctly the statement "we have had trouble finding places to play" was uttered by Jeff during an interview on a Seattle radio program. They didnt talk too much about the band, more about sports. It was a conversation about the fact that the Sonic were leaving.
I think the quote I am refering to is pretty much verbatim0 -

they werent going to play key arena. lets go on from there. For whatever reason they werent going to play Key. Lets move on to the next point: If you refuse to play Key, where else can you play in Seattle? They had trouble finding venues to play at.
I dont understand why thats so hard to comprehend.
The reason for them not playing key is trivial. The fact is the didnt play Key from time period A to now, and the fact is, trying to find other venues to play OTHER THAN THE KEY, they had trouble finding places!0 -
my point is for pearl jam to play, you really need an arena/stadium. You have the Key Arena. Other than that, in Seattle, NOT THE GORGE, what other big places could they play?
The Showbox, Benaroya and others arent Arenas/stadiums to my knowledge.0 -

PJ played Key Arena in 2002, a proper arena and tickets were sold to the general public as well as being made available to 10C members via a seating lottery; however, since you're rejecting the very existence of the shows at that particular time and place as PJ @ Seattle-proper shows, how exactly do you define a PJ @ Seattle-proper show in an arena whereby tickets are sold to the general public and are also made available to 10C members (with or without seniority for seating)? and does the Benaroya Hall concert in '03 not count as a PJ @ Seattle-proper show either (where all tickets were made available to the general public without fanclub tickets even available)?!
this delusion is simply overwhelming,...

lol. I tend to agree. The 2002 shows were sold to ticketmaster like any other concert. They just lacked the usual 10c distribution methods.
It'd be like saying the 2nd 2000 show wasn't a proper show because it didn't have 10c tickets. If its a full blown arena show, and the ticket are available to the public, thats a real concert.
I also don't follow all the hate for the gorge. I'm willing to agree thats its not technically a Seattle show, but gorge shows tend to be played in lieue of seattle (you never see both), so a few shows at the gorge were pretty cool, I wasn't expecting them to do the gorge and seattle, no bands do that.
So while its been nearly 7 years since the last key arena show, I think the gorge shows made up for it (especially the 05 show, that was awesome).
There's alot of fans that don't get shows nearly as close as the gorge is to seattle, and the gorge is an awesome venue. While they don't need to play it every tour, its cool if they do it once and while.0 -

I agree with zod. I do not feel as though we as a region have been skipped in 6 1/2 or 9 years, as we just had three shows at The Gorge in 2005 and 2006 and as you said (and I have said before), The Gorge is for Seattle area folks. We are the ones who primarily travel there for show, and a band never plays Seattle and The Gorge both on the same leg of a tour.
On the subject of whether or not the 2002 Key Arena shows were "proper":
Some would say that the 2002 shows were more "warm up" shows than "proper" shows. There was no 10c seniority, no official bootlegs, and it was 2 months before the actual 2003 Riot Act tour kicked off in Australia. And in comparison to the 2003 official boots, the Key Arena shows were kinda...not on par with the rest of that years shows.0 -
All that said....
I am waaaaay fucking stoked for the two upcoming Seattle shows at The Key with Ben Harper and Relentless 7 opening up!! I cannot wait for the shows. And, it will be a lot cheaper than the Gorge, as just going to the Gorge costs more money than Seattle. And to get to sleep in my own bed after each show, well that's just nice.
Bring on SEPTEMBER!!!!0 -
I would be interested to know why Seattle did not build a new arena. I am not saying that they should or shouldn't have. I would just like to know why. My understanding is that Seattle has a large amount of wealth and modern industry.0
-
Well, it depends on what time period you are asking about. When we remodeled The Coliseum into The Key Arena about 12 years ago or so, the current owner of The SuperSonics didn't even want to make the new facility NHL friendly, which pretty much shot our chances of an NHL team. And what we got was a venue that outdated itself in less than 10 years according to new NBA standards...err should I say cock sucking David Stern standards.lostdogs77 wrote:I would be interested to know why Seattle did not build a new arena. And then the other side of it, I think is, the region ponied up for a brand new baseball park and brand new football stadium, both to replace the multi-use Kingdome, which was just 30 some years old. And The Safe and Qwest Field were not that long after remodeling the Coliseum into the Key, so we thought we were good for all three major sports. And I think when we were asked to pony up AGAIN for a greedy NBA owner, the tax payers of WA had had enough! The state legislators refused to entertain the idea to extend the hotel and rental car tax in Seattle that is currently going towards paying for both the Safe and Qwest Field, and they totally shafted the Sonics fans.
I could now go on a complete tangent on how pissed off and bitter I am over the Sonics deal, but I will save you that.0 -
Thanks for the great explanation! It is just a shame that all of these facilities have to be 100% public funded while the owner of the sports teams and the players are/were getting paid maybe a little too well. It just seems weird to me that Seattle does not have a "current generation" arena and that they lost the Sonics.0
