Why do they still make DVDs in FULLSCREEN? A rant.

    No, I'm not talking about the two sided disc. It's a menu option within the DVD.

    1) Not everyone has a widescreen TV. Those of us that don't may prefer the full screen version. Shocking, isn't it?!

    2) It's no one's fault but your own for buying the version you didn't want. If you're so pro-widescreen you would think that would be something you'd be 100% sure got when buying a movie.

    I didn't know they had too many of those. I have one that I'm aware of that gives you the option, then makes you flip it over ;)

    I bring this up because in the haze of holiday shopping I decided to get myself 'The Simpson Movie' today at Circuit City. Firstly, their "new" releases are in a cube-shaped shelf system in the middle of a high-traffic area. (In my store they're between the video games and the Verizon shop, which is about 7' of space with a 4' cube of movies in the middle.

    So basically I found myself plowing through 10 people to get to the side with the movie on it.. I had to reach around a mother who was carrying her child and talking on a cell phone to grab the movie. I even thought as I grabbed it "I wonder if there are two versions, full/widescreen, NAA they don't make fullscreen anymore." Plus there was only one row of movies (that I saw), so I figured all were the same.

    I got home, wrapped some crap, got a beer, popped in the movie and BOOM, hello disclaimer! So basically I won't watch it. $15 well spent I must say.

    I guess it's overall my fault for being impatient, but hell, why are they still producing DVDs in fullscreen at all? I have a widescreen TV now, but even when I didn't I was still buying the widescreen versions.

    you can probly take it back and exchange it. i did that with a lotr movie i bought from target once.

    Widescreen is def. the way to go IMO.

    Yeah, it can be a little "small" on a CRT, but it's still better then having a chopped up picture.

    I have a 50" widescreen TV so widescreen is the the only option.

    I always watched widescreen even before I had a widescreen tv. It's the way the movie is shot and supposed to be viewed.

    I agree, with the OP, I don't like reformatted, colorized, remastered, fucked with etc.

    Give me what was original and how it was meant to be seen and heard.

    agreed.
    i don't even get why they offer the CHOICE on some dvds, to be fullscreen or widescreen. it's lame. a dvd should be EXACTLY as the director filmed and edited it for the screen. full-screen does cut out a great deal of the framing of each shot....so yea....everyone needs to learn to dal with the minor black bands above/below....it is sooo NOT distracting in the least, and many tvs nowadays are widescreen too......and hell, i just like to see my flicks *exactly* as they are meant to be seen. :) so i fully endorse your rant. :p

    I am 22 years old and a film enthusiast. Full screen may be available for the older generations or those with poor eyesight. My father, age 49, suffers from both. He hates widescreen and even uses the zoom option while watching HD tv. He obviously misses the point and is too proud or cheap to buy proper eye glasses.

    It's cute how some people think that widescreen means that it's just for widescreen tvs.

    The reason widescreen tvs have become people is because that's the format of FILM. Notice how when you go to a cinema, it's widescreen and always has been? That's the format of the film the movie is shot on. Yes, when you watch a movie that has been formatted full-screen you're not seeing the same thing you would have in a theatre- nor are you seeing it as the director and cinematographer intended. Often times there are other things going on "out of frame" in the full-screen version that you miss out on.

    Before I learned the difference back in high school I found the black bars annoying as well. Ever since then I barely notice them- it's worth it to get used to them.

    Obviously it's a matter of opinion, but I agree... I find "pan and scan" MUCH more annoying...

    The best example of the MOST annoying fullscreen movie I know would be the original Ghostbusters. I thought it's how it was made! But when you see the action sort of slow down/stop, and the camera pans from the right to the left to show the other actors.. well that's not a camera move.. that's the whole screen that you can see on widescreen but on fullscreen you miss a whole actor half of the time. Next time Ghostbusters is on fullscreen, look out for this, I seriously never noticed until I saw it on widescreen. It's like you're missing soo much!

    A widescreen movie on an older TV just produces black bars, which seemingly go away after a while. When I first got my new TV i hated that it had black bars on the sides during normal, fullscreen programming.. now I don't even see them.

    Also it's like people that appreciate vinyl so much more because "it's how music is supposed to sound"... thats how I feel about widescreen :P

    I guess I was naive in thinking people didn't watch fullscreen anymore. Oh well, goes to show you that there's more to the world than just my apartment :D
