I don't have a wide screen TV, and I can't stand full screen movies. You loose some picture and that cheesy pan and scan could be the most annoying thing ever.
I don't even notice the black box on widescreen movies.

agreed.
i don't even get why they offer the CHOICE on some dvds, to be fullscreen or widescreen. it's lame. a dvd should be EXACTLY as the director filmed and edited it for the screen. full-screen does cut out a great deal of the framing of each shot....so yea....everyone needs to learn to dal with the minor black bands above/below....it is sooo NOT distracting in the least, and many tvs nowadays are widescreen too......and hell, i just like to see my flicks *exactly* as they are meant to be seen. so i fully endorse your rant.
I am 22 years old and a film enthusiast. Full screen may be available for the older generations or those with poor eyesight. My father, age 49, suffers from both. He hates widescreen and even uses the zoom option while watching HD tv. He obviously misses the point and is too proud or cheap to buy proper eye glasses.
It's cute how some people think that widescreen means that it's just for widescreen tvs.
The reason widescreen tvs have become people is because that's the format of FILM. Notice how when you go to a cinema, it's widescreen and always has been? That's the format of the film the movie is shot on. Yes, when you watch a movie that has been formatted full-screen you're not seeing the same thing you would have in a theatre- nor are you seeing it as the director and cinematographer intended. Often times there are other things going on "out of frame" in the full-screen version that you miss out on.
Before I learned the difference back in high school I found the black bars annoying as well. Ever since then I barely notice them- it's worth it to get used to them.

Obviously it's a matter of opinion, but I agree... I find "pan and scan" MUCH more annoying...

The best example of the MOST annoying fullscreen movie I know would be the original Ghostbusters. I thought it's how it was made! But when you see the action sort of slow down/stop, and the camera pans from the right to the left to show the other actors.. well that's not a camera move.. that's the whole screen that you can see on widescreen but on fullscreen you miss a whole actor half of the time. Next time Ghostbusters is on fullscreen, look out for this, I seriously never noticed until I saw it on widescreen. It's like you're missing soo much!
A widescreen movie on an older TV just produces black bars, which seemingly go away after a while. When I first got my new TV i hated that it had black bars on the sides during normal, fullscreen programming.. now I don't even see them.
Also it's like people that appreciate vinyl so much more because "it's how music is supposed to sound"... thats how I feel about widescreen :P
I guess I was naive in thinking people didn't watch fullscreen anymore. Oh well, goes to show you that there's more to the world than just my apartment
Abraham Lincoln once said, "If you are a racist, I will attack you with the North."
Seriously.. wtf! Who buys fullscreen stuff? Why make this crap? Call me picky, but i just can't watch a DVD in fullscreen if it's meant to be in widescreen.

I bring this up because in the haze of holiday shopping I decided to get myself 'The Simpson Movie' today at Circuit City. Firstly, their "new" releases are in a cube-shaped shelf system in the middle of a high-traffic area. (In my store they're between the video games and the Verizon shop, which is about 7' of space with a 4' cube of movies in the middle.
So basically I found myself plowing through 10 people to get to the side with the movie on it.. I had to reach around a mother who was carrying her child and talking on a cell phone to grab the movie. I even thought as I grabbed it "I wonder if there are two versions, full/widescreen, NAA they don't make fullscreen anymore." Plus there was only one row of movies (that I saw), so I figured all were the same.
I got home, wrapped some crap, got a beer, popped in the movie and BOOM, hello disclaimer! So basically I won't watch it. $15 well spent I must say.
I guess it's overall my fault for being impatient, but hell, why are they still producing DVDs in fullscreen at all? I have a widescreen TV now, but even when I didn't I was still buying the widescreen versions.

Why don't you get HD movies instead of widescreen ?

i don't appreciate an 8 inch black bar on the top and bottom.
You better appreciate an editted version of the film you're watching? And so far as I know, it used to be that a full screen version would appear on a widescreen tv with the bars on the left and right instead. Now, at best you're not only seeing an editted version but one that's heavily distorted to fit the screen. Perhaps this has changed but this is how it used to be at least.
Because I don't want to shell out $400 on a HD DVD player just yet.
May as well wait until HD DVD is finished off anyway, then all your favorite movies will only be on one format. Price should be a bit lower by then too.

Same here, sometimes I feel like the black bar takes me more space than the picture.......I have some of the both but I much prefer the full screen
You may "feel" the bars take away from the picture but by watching stuff that has been re-formatted for fullscreen viewing, you are in essence missing 20% of your movie/tv show.
i hate wide screen too!! and i do have a wide screen TV, its so annoying how the picture looks like its stretched.
If it looks stretched that's because it's formatted for fullscreen and you have your TV set on widescreen. Look for a "format" button or something like that on the remote and mess with it until the picture looks good.
Check out this site and tell me you still prefer full screen.. trust me, you don't even notice the letterboxes (the black bars) after 5 minutes.
i hate wide screen too!! and i do have a wide screen TV, its so annoying how the picture looks like its stretched.
Definetly the wrong format or display settings, because widescreen is most def. not stretched.
With a widescreen TV, you can stretch the 4:3 to fill up the entire screen...this is "stretched". The widescreen 16:9 won't and shouldn't be stretched unless you tell the TV to do it.
Seriously.. wtf! Who buys fullscreen stuff? Why make this crap? Call me picky, but i just can't watch a DVD in fullscreen if it's meant to be in widescreen.

You know widescreen comes with a disclaimer, too ("the black bars at the top and bottom are normal...")
Even before I bought a 37" widescreen tv, I preferred widescreen dvds (and vhs for that matter). I love the way dvds "enhanced for widescreen tvs" look on the new tv. The only thing that bugs me (just a little) is when the movie has a greater than 1.85:1 ratio on a standard def dvd, it still has back bars. They aren't bad, but I wish they'd just adjust it like they do the HD and Blu rays.
The real question is, how much was the Simpsons movie at Circuit City this week? I'm gonna get it Friday, but I didn't get a Sunday paper to compare prices.

Sorry, but formatted full-screen makes me cringe.
i think it has changed because when i pop in a fullscreen dvd i don't have the bars to the left and right. and it's not on zoom. it looks just like the programs i watch on tv.
i don't know a lot about dvds, but some of the widescreen movies i have are different than the other widescreen movies...it drives me nuts. so much that i hit the Picture Size button to zoom in once....then it looks like the others.
i don't know what the feck is going on.
btw, i just appreciate the fact that im able to watch movies in my own home. i have just recently come around to accepting widescreen.
ill watch whatever.
Esther's here and she's sick?
hi Esther, now we are all going to be sick, thanks
I feel your pain.. I just ordered Man Vs. Wild season 1 and its non-anomorphic.. Its widescreen, but meant for full-screen TVs, so now I have to watch it all stretched out, while loosing some resolution..
if you like widescreen and the black bars dont bother you, watch wide screen.
if they do bother you, buy full screen..
either way, read the box before you buy it, and you surely wont waste everyones time with your rants.
having said that...
I am in the widescreen camp...
and one word can perfectly sum up why pan and scan/fullscreen is awful.. and that word is... Multiplicity. Watch it folks, and you'll understand the major advantage of widescreen.
