    but who's to decide what's too dangerous for our needs? People push the boundaries all the time to get their kicks... some people think a parachute jump is too dangerous, some have done 20 of them and are getting bored with them, some find it's simply not enough

    Maybe I'm reading that wrong, but that sounds awfully lonely. I guess if I felt that way, just running out alone wouldn't be that big of a deal, either. To me, friends & family are everything so of course the idea of me doing what Stick is doing is absurd.

    Yes danger is definitely something that differs from person to person. As for your example though, when you go sky diving there are safety procautions that are taken. Parachutes are checked and rechecked. Emergency chutes are packed and checked and rechecked. You tandum jump with a certified instructor. Before you even get onto the plane they teach you how to land and what to do in case of an emergency. So even if you are under taking something as dangerous as sky diving you are still prepared for emergencies. Mountain biking across country with no destination in mind, with limited funds, limited supplies, and during the winter months is not only dangerous but reckless. Does he have any hunting skills, survival skills, does he have emergency funds so if he gets stuck he can access that money to help himself. Is he carrying any type of protection, there are some sick motherfuckers out there. So even though activitie slike sky diving or mountain clibing may be dangerous people do not go about it in a reckless manner increasing the dangers they may face and leaving a wide open window for tragedy.

    Thats clearly a key...those of us who have family and friends we are close to will find what Stickboy is doing to be a bit off the wall, but if he is having such a rough patch in life, it probably makes sense to him. Hopefully he'll be smart and safe along the way. Some people can survive like this, most could not. And there's a lot of things to worry about besides just the elements. I think lots of people get inspired or enamored by something like "Into the Wild", but there is a lot of negative stuff that doesn't get glamorized as much aside from the obvious end for McCandless.
    When I read "On the Road" as a teenager, the idea of hitchhiking across the country sounded enticing, until I though long and hard about the downside of such a trek.
    I hope it works out for him, and I hope it wasn't just folly because of a movie.

    I am not positive, but his myspace profile says he is 35. He may be younger though, like 25-35.

    I worry about a gator getting eli while he is sleeping, or biking in the dark... there are some crazy animals lurking around Florida! I can just see a gator with it's mouth wide open, eli about to bike right into it, then seeing the gator and him flicking a burning blunt into the gators mouth, then escaping unharmed!!!
    I wish I could get on a bike and join Eli for a day!

    Well, people have been doing this for years and years before Into the Wild came out. :)
    Just because someone takes off on a bike doesn't mean they're bums! He's a resourceful dude and will be able to work for supper.

    I have a friend right down the street from me who did a cross country bike trip this year. He and a friend flew to Frisco, put their back bike tires into the Pacific then road to the Atlantic ocean. Does that mean Into the Wild took after Tom? :D They had a bit more of an organized schedule, though.
    They were definitely not in shape before they left, and three months later arrived with amazing stories of great people and experiences.

    I loved doing stuff like this and there is a feeling of exhilaration along with a feeling of fear and of wonderment when you meet amazing people and see beautiful countryside. You'll never see or experience this by sitting in a cubicle in front of a computer watching youtube videos!

    It's not lonely. He will meet lots of different people during his journey, from different walks of life. He'll have great conversations with them, maybe some of these may enlighten him. He will definitely learn from all of these people. He will also have time to reflect, to put things in perspective, etc.

    And... what an adventure.. you and your bike :) (and the odd gator or bear). In a way, I envy him...

    Well I would rather have a long happy life then a short reckless one, but that's just me. I also don't feel that you need to put yourself into such a precarious situation in order to live life to the fullest.

    Ok....so now after I read all of these...

    This is NOT like Into The Wild....he went on a bike ride....that's it. Hopefully he'll be ok.
