I really have never heard or experienced one good thing about unions.
I am sure teachers unions are not too bad.

we actually caught a housekeeper, not once but twice, sleeping in a guest room. we tried to fire him both times, the union would not allow us.

    what gives?

  • More power to you if thats what you are into or if thats what you need to be protected at your job but I have nothing but bad things to say about the ones in my area. I sell a lot of things to the Casino's in Atlantic City and the guys at the loading dock are all Teamsters. LAZY! So fucking lazy and it baffels me. If I worked at a loading dock I would not make my day by long as hell by waaaalking slowwwww, checking in the deliveriessss at the pace of a turtleeeeee. They are just so fucking lazy. it really drivs me nuts when I go there everyday.
I think the reasons why unions started back in the day was for good reason. It was to keep people from being taken advantage of at the work place but now it seems like they just take advantage of it.
    Anyone else experience this?

My father was in a union for 30 plus yrs where he worked. He worked in a steel mill and busted his ass. They went on strike one yr over money of course. IMO the union fucked my dad and all the rest of the workers for a cheaper deal. But I will never say that to him. I think unions are good and bad.

  • I do not belong to a union, but I work along side of one as a project engineer.

The union has such an old school mentality that just breeds laziness. If you ever want to witness the old saying; "this is the way we have always done it", watch a union at work. Oh, and the line; "that's not part of my job"...yeah, I hear that daily.

In this day and age, a union is just a hinderance of progression.

I would hear this relentlessly! Fucking burned me up. I spent half my days on the site standing around with my thumbs up my ass because I had to wait for this union to get back from lunch, this other one to get back from another site...Fucking ridiculous.

Aaaaand it's another reason why my city's ass-backwards, and usually the last to come up to speed in anything because everyone needs to have their hand in on the cash.
  • I slack off a little sure - but as most of the people working in a non-union position and posting here, I do my job. As for the comment, it's not part of my job, I don't find that at all. We all work together, there's very little competition amongst staff and back stabbing is minimal. We're not all sucking up to the bosses for promotion...the boss doesn't have any say, we apply for a better position.

As for sleeping on the job - shit like that does happen, but not as often as you're led to believe. It's one story taken out of context and repeated over and over again, much like welfare rip-offs.

Thats not my job line was used daily when I worked in the casinos. I was a food and beverage manager and if you asked a bus boy to do something to help during the busy times that was not his job....forget it. And you can make him do it, but then he will file a grevience and its a bunch of bull shit.

Hell yea! If you are a manager in the casino you bust your ass. The problem is that you are not allowed to do a union members job. Even if its busy. WTF?
So I ask another member to do it because we are short staffed and you get a hassel.
I would always get in trouble for helping guys to stuff and the shop steward would give me a hard time.
    No laziness here.

i am not nor have i ever been in a union. my husband has been in a union almost his entire working life. in his line of work it is pretty much a given. his union really does nothing for him tho, and for years he has considered leaving, but for various reasons has not. eh, at the very least the dues are an annual tax deduction. bleh.

that said, calling union workers lazy is insulting to say the least. that is like saying anyone who misuses apostrophes or grammar is unintelligent or lazy. basically, it simply is not true. there may be plenty of lazy union workers, but i'd hazard a guess and say there are many lazy workers period, unionized or not. beyond that, i would say more are NOT lazy than are, but it's all a matter of opinion until some scientific study is done to show being a union member makes one lazy.

as mentioned, my husband has been in a union for 20+ years and he is ANYthing but lazy, gets commendations often and is highly valued. most public school teachers are unionized, and say what you will about time off and the like - as a former teacher i know all too well how needed it is! :p - to dismiss such an educated base of workers, most who work ridiculously hard for their students is well, baseless.

unions aren't nearly as needed as they once were, and some are abused/abusive....but i do not think they are entirely without merit. i think certain professions do still need some representation and protections, but as with most things...no one system is 'perfect.'

btw - BOTH 'you're's in your sig should be written as 'you're.'
you are saying 'you are'....not 'your ........' just sayin'......

I'm surprised you're not allowed to do the job, especially bus-boy that's just cleaning tables basically.

I guessing the reason for him not to help - the company would have to call someone in, extra shift, overtime or hire another person, even if part-time.

I didn't say I agree with everything a union is, however, if I have a choice, I'd always choose working for one. :)

Thank you. It burns me to no end! I am lead on a ton of projects at my company and you have no idea how many fucking loop holes I have to go through to get anything done. And the sad part of it is that everything I do is to benefit the company and make the employees lives easier, and they still fight it! Sometimes over 10 fucking cents an hour!!

well that is your personal experience, nothing more, nothing less. certainly does not make it fact. and as i said, i would guess there are PLENTY of 'lazy ass bums' in all lines of work, unionized or not. there are abuses on both sides of the union issue, so again, certainly not truly defending them....but they are here, some still see purpose and thus get support/members.....and so it goes.

and doubtful, unless you are in federal law enforcement.

as our dear conor would tell you :p.....it's a personal annoyance of mine when people parade personal opinion as fact, or present an 'always' view of something when clearly, it isn't 'always' the case, not by a long shot. are there lazy ass bums in unions? you bet. are most union members lazy ass bums? i personally think not. c'est la vie.
