More power to you if thats what you are into or if thats what you need to be protected at your job but I have nothing but bad things to say about the ones in my area. I sell a lot of things to the Casino's in Atlantic City and the guys at the loading dock are all Teamsters. LAZY! So fucking lazy and it baffels me. If I worked at a loading dock I would not make my day by long as hell by waaaalking slowwwww, checking in the deliveriessss at the pace of a turtleeeeee. They are just so fucking lazy. it really drivs me nuts when I go there everyday.
I think the reasons why unions started back in the day was for good reason. It was to keep people from being taken advantage of at the work place but now it seems like they just take advantage of it.
Anyone else experience this?

Living in the city of unions, it's hard to keep my point of view without getting ready to fight, but I can't stand them. I used to work for my buddy's granite business doing various things and we got a contract to supply the new Symphony House on Broad Street with all the granite in the residences. When we got there we had to wait for one union to take the granite off the truck and up the elevator. Another to install the granite, and another to do adjustments. Fucking ridiculous. Unions run Philly, and is part of the reason why the system here, along with the politicians, are so corrupt.

was in a union then i was promoted so I guess I switched sides. But to your point I was training this new guy in our freezer , for the time he was on probation(90 days) til he joined the union(at 60 days) he was a good worker , then goot the union card and mistakenly thought it would protect him. Turned into a backtalking , slow working little jerk.
From what I can see the union at my work is primarily for the health benifits and twice yearly raises. They will stick up for the member but it's a pretty broad contract.Still at will employment.

Oh the union is UFCW. not that that matters

You shouldn't really complain working a few months out of the year pushing a peanut cart around for $250,000...sounds pretty fucking sweet to me ;)..

Edit: And of course finding time out of the busy schedule to post about gypsies and such ;)..

You work year around a dick? lol..:)..and I'm confused, I guess you meant that now you work year-round but then in your next sentence it appears you work 70 hours per week for 8 months out of the year?? That's not year-round..and actually that's just about the breakdown for me as a teacher..lol...so maybe it's not exactly what you thought ;)..

didn't work out too well for the hotel to say the least.

we actually caught a housekeeper, not once but twice, sleeping in a guest room. we tried to fire him both times, the union would not allow us.

    what gives?

My father was in a union for 30 plus yrs where he worked. He worked in a steel mill and busted his ass. They went on strike one yr over money of course. IMO the union fucked my dad and all the rest of the workers for a cheaper deal. But I will never say that to him. I think unions are good and bad.

  • I do not belong to a union, but I work along side of one as a project engineer.

The union has such an old school mentality that just breeds laziness. If you ever want to witness the old saying; "this is the way we have always done it", watch a union at work. Oh, and the line; "that's not part of my job"...yeah, I hear that daily.

In this day and age, a union is just a hinderance of progression.

Oh, and the line; "that's not part of my job"...yeah, I hear that daily.

I would hear this relentlessly! Fucking burned me up. I spent half my days on the site standing around with my thumbs up my ass because I had to wait for this union to get back from lunch, this other one to get back from another site...Fucking ridiculous.

Aaaaand it's another reason why my city's ass-backwards, and usually the last to come up to speed in anything because everyone needs to have their hand in on the cash.
  • I slack off a little sure - but as most of the people working in a non-union position and posting here, I do my job. As for the comment, it's not part of my job, I don't find that at all. We all work together, there's very little competition amongst staff and back stabbing is minimal. We're not all sucking up to the bosses for promotion...the boss doesn't have any say, we apply for a better position.

As for sleeping on the job - shit like that does happen, but not as often as you're led to believe. It's one story taken out of context and repeated over and over again, much like welfare rip-offs.

Thats not my job line was used daily when I worked in the casinos. I was a food and beverage manager and if you asked a bus boy to do something to help during the busy times that was not his job....forget it. And you can make him do it, but then he will file a grevience and its a bunch of bull shit.
    Fucking hate unions
