RANGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH THOMAS POCK

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with restricted free agent defenseman Thomas Pock.
Pock, 24, spent a majority of the 2005-06 season with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL), registering 15 goals and 46 assists for 61 points, along with 99 penalty minutes in 67 games. He finished the season ranking second on the Wolf Pack in assists (46) and tied for fifth on the team in scoring with 61 points.
His 61 points ranked third among all AHL defensemen and also set a Wolf Pack franchise record for points in a single season by a defenseman. Pock also skated in six postseason contests with the Wolf Pack, notching three assists along with 15 penalty minutes. In addition, the 2006 AHL All-Star appeared in eight games with the Rangers, registering one goal and one assist, along with four penalty minutes.
The 6-1, 208-pound defenseman has appeared in 14 career games with the Rangers, registering three goals and three assists, along with four penalty minutes. In 117 career American Hockey League (AHL) games with the Hartford Wolf Pack, Pock has collected 16 goals and 51 assists for 67 points, along with 154 penalty minutes.
Prior to joining the professional ranks in North America, Pock appeared in 130 career games with the University of Massachusetts Minutemen (Hockey East), registering 44 goals and 58 assists for 102 points, along with 179 penalty minutes. He finished his U-Mass career tied for sixth on the school's all-time scoring list with 102 points.
As a senior at U-Mass, Pock was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star, was selected to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team and was tabbed a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate player. During his junior year, he was selected as a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and was also voted as the Minutemen's most valuable player.
Before attending the University of Massachusetts, the Klagenfurt, Austria native played for the Klagenfurt Athletic Club of the Austrian Senior League. He was also a member of the Austrian National Team at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah and at the World Championships in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

After enjoying a revival season that ended on a sour note, the Rangers were looking to make a few changes during the offseason.
They made a smart, big-money pitch to lure Devils winger Patrik Elias on the first day of free-agent shopping. The Rangers couldn't get Elias to turn in his pitchfork, but they forced their cross-river rivals to spend to the limit to keep him. I guess that's the next best thing to getting such a good player.
In the past, the Rangers might have just moved onto the next big name on the market. In the "new" NHL, you have to be more careful how you spend your money. The Rangers seem to have figured that out.
Despite missing out on Elias, they did grab two key role players from the Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes, signing versatile forward Matt Cullen and stay-at-home defender Aaron Ward.
Cullen, who might have been the best forward during the Hurricanes' Game 7 Cup-winning victory over the Oilers, signed a four-year deal worth $11.2 million. Cullen, 29, is a good skater who can play center or wing. In Carolina, he also played the point on the power play. He figures to be a second-line player in New York.
Ward, a three-time Cup winner, accepted a two-year, $5.5 million deal. The Rangers might have overpaid a bit for the 33-year-old defender, but Ward does bring some much-needed toughness and big-game experience to the Big Apple.
The Rangers' most interesting free-agent acquisition came a little later in the summer. On July 9, the club signed another three-time Cup winner, Brendan Shanahan. The 37-year-old left winger, who signed a one-year, $4 million deal, scored 40 goals for the Wings last season.
Shanahan is a low-risk addition. If things don't work out, the club can cut ties after the season.

Both guys are terrific at one-timing the puck from those positions. But who'll quarterback the power play and make those smooth passes to the two snipers? Will coach Tom Renney turn to Cullen? Would GM Glen Sather consider bringing back Rangers icon Brian Leetch (who remains on the free-agent market) to play such a role? Is young Fedor Tyutin ready for such an important job?
Another choice might be defenseman Karel Rachunek, who signed a one-year, $1.8 million deal after spending last season in the Russian Superleague. Rachunek, 26, has some offensive flair, but he probably isn't the club's first choice to quarterback the power play.
The Rangers also added a little size to the wing, acquiring 6-foot-3, 210-pound Adam Hall from the Predators. In 75 games with Nashville last season, the 25-year-old Michigan State grad scored 14 goals and dished out 15 assists.
Sather sacrificed role-playing pivot Dominic Moore (who wound up in Pittsburgh) to get Hall. He also allowed center Steve Rucchin, wingers Martin Rucinsky and Petr Sykora and defenseman Tom Poti to leave via free agency. Rucchin and Rucinsky were valuable contributors last season, but both missed time due to injury. Sykora didn't impress during his short time in New York, while Poti wore out his welcome with the fans. He was often, and sometimes wrongly so, singled out by the vocal home crowd for weak defensive play.

New York also might be without gritty winger Jed Ortmeyer, who was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism earlier this month. At this point, the condition isn't life threatening, but there's no telling when he'll be cleared to play. Ortmeyer, 27, is a quick forward who can block shots and kill penalties. If he can't play, the Rangers will miss the spark he brings to the team.
The Rangers' summer acquisitions should make the club a little more difficult to handle. Cullen and Shanahan have the ability to take a little of the offensive pressure off Jagr, who will be ready for the season opener after offseason shoulder surgery.
Still, despite the new recruits, the Rangers won't build on last season without the continued great work of Jagr and sophomore goalie Henrik Lundqvist. If either player falters, the Rangers will find themselves in a tooth-and-nail struggle just to make the playoffs.

The Islanders announced the signing of Sound Beach product Peter Ferraro to a one-year contract. Ferraro, 33, was selected in the first round of the 1992 NHL draft by the Rangers.
In 92 games for the Rangers, Boston, Washington and Pittsburgh, Ferraro, a 5-10, 180-pound right winger, has nine goals and 15 assists.
