    either did I ;)

Doesn't seem to be a whole lot about god in it though.

    There are a few exceptions.
I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire
  • I think any country with the words:

"And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air"

contained in their first verse of their national anthem should consider changing their national anthem.

To be fair "Deutschland über alles" "Germany above all" is no longer part of the German National Anthem post-WW2 and saying it will get you banned from german forums.

I didn'y know that. What do they sing now ??

Oh that's right, the chicken dance song !!
    Music is not a competetion.

I think we should have a choice. Sing the anthem or not. Nothing wrong with having one. Nothing wrong with ignoring it.

Gee you folk have real problems understanding that they're called PRAWNS!!! :D Shrimp???!! pfft! PRAWNS people!! PRAWNS!!! :D:p

Supposing I was gonna drink beer, which is fairly unusual, it's be Cascade or Boags. Just because CUB had a big worldwide push for their shitty beer doesn't mean that we drink much of it here! It's the beer we send overseas!! ;)

Now about Skippy. Unfortunately, in some parts of this country Skippy has reached plague proportions. I hate to see them killed off but if they are starving because there are too many of them, I'd rather see them culled humanely than die out from starvation or be hit by cars.

    move to Scotland :D

from wiki "Scotland does not possess a legally recognised or confirmed anthem of its own."

it does however have 2 unofficial anthems that are sung at sporting events and/or slayings

    Flower O Scotland
    O Flower of Scotland,
    When will we see
    Your like again,
    That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
    And stood against him,
    Proud Edward's Army,
    And sent him homeward,
    Tae think again.

    The Hills are bare now,
    And Autumn leaves
    lie thick and still,
O'er land that is lost now,
    Which those so dearly held,
    That stood against him,
    Proud Edward's Army,
    And sent him homeward,
    Tae think again.

    Those days are past now,
    And in the past
    they must remain,
But we can still rise now,
    And be the nation again,
    That stood against him,
    Proud Edward's Army,
    And sent him homeward,
    Tae think again.

    O Flower of Scotland,
    When will we see
    your like again,
    That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
    And stood against him,
    Proud Edward's Army,
    And sent him homeward,
    Tae think again

    OR

    Scotland The Brave
    Towering in gallant fame,
    Scotland my mountain hame,
    High may your proud
    standards gloriously wave,
    Land of my high endeavour,
    Land of the shining river,
Land of my heart for ever,
    Scotland the brave.

    High in the misty Highlands,
    Out by the purple islands,
Brave are the hearts that beat
    Beneath Scottish skies.
Wild are the winds to meet you,
Staunch are the friends that greet you,
Kind as the love that shines
    from fair maidens' eyes.

    Towering in gallant fame,
    Scotland my mountain hame,
    High may your proud
    standards gloriously wave,
    Land of my high endeavour,
    Land of the shining river,
Land of my heart for ever,
    Scotland the brave.

    Far off in sunlit places,
    Sad are the Scottish faces,
    Yearning to feel the kiss
    Of sweet Scottish rain.
    Where tropic skies are beaming,
    Love sets the heart a-dreaming,
Longing and dreaming for the homeland again.

    Towering in gallant fame,
    Scotland my mountain hame,
    High may your proud
    standards gloriously wave,
    Land of my high endeavour,
    Land of the shining river,
Land of my heart for ever,
    Scotland the brave.

It's a generational thing I suspect, Hinny. I mean there were a whole stack of folk back in the Chisel days that used to call Khe Sahn the unofficial national anthem!!

Think, I'm glad we no longer sing God Save The Queen, which I can remember doing every morning at assembly with a picture of HRH in front of us.

And that even though I don't really care for it, we should keep Advance Australia Fair, and I'll keep mumbling along sometimes, when the mood strikes me to. :D

um because a majority of us, back in the day when cate and I were growing up, had English, Irish and Scottish ancestory. and we got stuck singing all kinds of stuff, like Scotland the Brave and the like. :o

haha somebody tell Wikipedia....that's where it's from

The wikipedia article also states that the music of the German anthem is from the 'Roman-German' anthem 'Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser' which is complete bull. Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser was the Austrian anthem and became 'Gott erhalte, Gott behüte' when Kaiser Franz Joseph died in 1916 (the next and last Kaiser wasn't called Franz anymore ;)). Joseph Haydn, the composer lived all his live in the province of Burgenland (on the Hungarian border which wasn't a border back then) and Vienna and nowhere near anything German. There was an American Football game between Hamburg and Vienna last year and when they started playing the anthems, the entire stadium started singing 'Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser' when the German anthem started. It wasn't even meant to be mean, but we still learn that one in school, so it's an automatic reaction.

We don't take ourselves too seriously though. Our 'new' anthem starts with

Land der Berge, Land am Strome (land of mountains, land on the stream)
so people sing Land der Zwerge, Land der Gnome (land of dwarfs, land of gnomes). It doesn't help that there's a Land der Hämmer in there since hammer is also another word for idiot in some parts of the country :D
You can tell a man from what he has to say - Neil & Tim Finn
They love you so badly for sharing their sorrow, so pick up that guitar and go break a heart - Kris Kristofferson

There's been quite a big anthem debate over here since the singing of God save the ***** in Croke park :o

    A Soldier's song

    Soldiers are we,
whose lives are pledged to Ireland
Some have come from a land beyond the wave,
    Some to be free,
    no more our ancient sireland
    Shall shelter the despot or the slave;
tonight we man the Bearna Baoghal
    In Erin's cause.
    come woe or weal;
'Mid cannon's roar and rifle's peal
    We'll chant a soldier's song.

    We'll sing a song, a soldier's song
    With cheering, rousing chorus
As round our blazing fires we thong,
    The starry heavens o'er us;
    Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the mornings light
here in the silence of the night
    We'll sing a soldier's song

    CHORUS

In valley green or towering crag
    Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
    That's floating o'er us,
We're children of a fighting race
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march the foe to face,
    We'll sing a soldier's song

    CHORUS

Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!
    The Long watched day is breaking;
    The serried ranks of Innisfail
    Shall set the tyrant quaking.
    Our camp fires now are burning low;
See in the east a silvery glow,
Out yonder waits the saxon foe,
    So sing a soldier's song.
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life
Had I not found this love with you
