NO, it doesn't. What was the percentage of America that voted in '04? Wasn't it something like 45% of the population? I'll have to look that up to be sure. But no one is doing anything about that majority who choose not to vote. By choosing not to have a voice, that's exactly what you're doing. You don't have one.0 -

Then go do something. I'm all for Free Speech, people can't shut me up here in my corner of the world.
Protest in the streets. Write your new congressman. Write the local government. Do ANYTHING but sit back and proclaim that by not voting, you're saying something, cause you're not.0 -

You're telling them that you do not support any of the candidates and that if they want your support they will have to come up with something better.
I do not understand how so many people CAN bring themselves to give a blanket 2, 4 or 6 year endorsement for someone to do whatever they want. I almost always disagree on some very fundamental level with a candidate and do not want to vote for them to do something that goes against what I feel is right. The only people we should try to get even with...

Well, don't sit back and proclaim that by voting you are doing something.

No it doesn't. It makes you indistinguishable from the masses of apathetic voters, or lazy assholes.
Go vote selectively. Choose some ballot issues, local races, etc... Go submit a ballot with no votes cast. That may send more of a message. But staying home sends absolutely no message at all."I'll use the magic word - let's just shut the fuck up, please." EV, 04/13/080 -
I find it funny how people say "If you don't vote, you can't complain"........That is such a stupid argument. If nothing else, it would mean that you can complain against both candidates. What if the only two options were Hitler and Sadaam? I have a lot more of a problem with people voting just for the sake of voting when they have no idea of what the person they are voting for stands for. So many people just go to vote and when they get there see a bunch of names that they have never heard of on the ballot........yet still vote for one of them anyway. If neither candidate supports your ideology or morals or values...........don't vote for either one...........I also have a big problem with voting for "the lesser of two evils". Calling congressmen and reps seems like a better way of voicing your opinion than voting in some cases.0

MY opinion is that I have no respect for our political process - therefore I will not participate.
That may not be the only reason people don't vote, but that is mine. A vote against Politics being more important than the country.0 -

Hmm...I was under the impression that people do not know how you vote, so how is your opinion known through voting? The only people we should try to get even with...

Vote!
There are plenty of candidates to choose from... If you don't like one then write one in. Just make it heard that you voted!
It would be nice if we could really vote for who we wanted and didn't feel compelled to vote for Rep or Dem. If we had Instant Runoff Voting, we could vote 3rd party and still feel like we had a choice.

Alright, kiddies. I'm not going to jump into the fray by offering an opinion of those who think they're making a statement by not voting, but I will say that I believe it's important to be part of the process. I agree that making the smallest effort (voting on referendums or for just one candidate you are in agreement with) is enough to make a difference.
And to my fellow women, there's no excuse. Our right to vote was fought for and won by brave, committed people, and it's our responsibility to do a little homework and get out there and participate."Information is not knowledge.

This entire discussion shows that the real problem is the restrictive system we have in place for ballot access. If more choices were available, more people would vote.
The two parties have conspired to make it virtually impossible for non- Republicrats to get on the ballot.
I think it is criminal that restrictive ballot access & redistricting are allowed to continue unabated. These two issues allow for entrenched incumbents and no voter options.0
