"Man Shot Dead While Attacking Neighbor"
Candace J. Samolinski

Robert J. Metz made it a point to know most everyone in his neighborhood, beeping his car horn whenever he drove by anyone who was outside.

If somebody was building something, the 47-year-old construction worker was there to offer advice and often lend a hand.

But his happy-go-lucky demeanor masked a mental illness that was slowly consuming Metz, relatives say.

Maria Pittaras, 28, was something of an enigma in the neighborhood. She moved to the Turtle Lakes subdivision at the Pasco- Hillsborough counties line about a year ago, just around the corner from Metz and his wife, Carolyn, Pittaras' father recalls.

Neighbors didn't see her outside much; she did most of her real estate-related work from home. She kept her yard immaculate and occasionally entertained friends with outdoor barbecues, neighbors say.

Pittaras and Metz weren't friends, but their worlds collided early Wednesday morning. Pasco County sheriff's deputies say Metz donned a mask and crept into the woman's bedroom, awakening her with a knife to her throat.

She managed to grab her gun from her nightstand and shot the intruder; he died almost instantly. Sheriff's officials later determined the shooting was in self-defense and won't bring charges.

The violent episode, the first of its kind there, has divided a neighborhood already grappling with increasing property crimes. But the young woman's father feels no ambivalence.

    Nope.

He had no business entering her house, period.

You hold a knife to someone's throat, you present a threat.

She did what she had to do.

Why is this question even being asked? I mean, seriously... WHO is going to say, "Yes... she should have let him attack her before shooting him"?

in a lenghty thread last week; many people stated that the law should be left to the police. and that people should not take the law into their own hands. it was called vigilante justice.
the man had a brain tumor which caused his erratic behavior. i posted this because the neighbours are divided. half believed she should've just let him rape her; while the others believe she did the right thing.
had she allowed him to rape her; the criminal justice system would have either delt the appropriate punishment or found the tumor saying he was mentally incompitent.
i didn't ask the question; the neighbours did. i'm just trying to get some feedback here.

Last week's thread is better than this weeks thread, as I like the crunch of apples and hate peeling oranges.

I believe the argument was you have the right to protect yourself if you were under threat but the guy in the other thread wasn't under direct threat by the criminal(s).

Anyone who believes she should of "let him rape her" should be beaten without mercy instantly.

well fuck that i'm not saying you are wrong but those neighbors saying she should of let him rape her are fucking retarded, i say good nfor the woman to have protected herself ,if anyone tried to do that at my house to my wife or daughter i would hope they could also protect themselves like this woman has. plus if the man's family knew he was off why didn't they step up to the plate and notify the powers that be that this individual was not taking hi's medecine anymore ....

Wait... you mean there's a difference between a woman, under attack, to defend herself with deadly force... and a mob of neighbors armed with torches and pitchforks marching over to the criminal's home, dragging him into the street and castrating him before dousing him with gasoline and tossing a lit road flare on his body?

These would be people from the more affluent neighborhoods. In the poorer parts of town they'd try to use Ripple.

anyone that believes the lady should have just lay there and allowed that person to rape her is fucking retarded. what is fucking wrong with this world that people can believe that.

    Of course not.

There is no comparison with the Horn situation.

Answer: The Pittaras case occured in 2000. The Gun Advocate webloggers have dredged this case up to attempt to hold it in comparison to the Horn case.

i see. there is NO comparison.
the next time the aliens visit these people, perhaps they should ask them to kindly remove their anal probe before they leave.
  • Of course this was justified... And who said the law should be left to the police when someone is being attacked by a knife wielding intruder?!?!? You might need a dictionary, but self-defense is not the same as vigilante justice.

At least you picked a current event story for your half-ass comparison  This one happened during the Clinton Administration.

her neighbors said she should have let him rape her? where? i'd love to see that quote.

also, there is a huge distinction between self-defense and vigilantism. as you yourself pointed out last week, big difference between home invasion and burglary. she had no choice in the matter, the man came into her home and she could not avoid the situation. joe horn chose to involve himself in a situation on someone else's property. not even the same ballpark.
