WASHINGTON - Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, confessed to that attack and a string of others during a military hearing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, according to a transcript released Wednesday by the Pentagon. "I was responsible for the 9/11 operation from A to Z," Mohammed said in a statement read during the session, which was held last Saturday.

The transcripts also refer to a claim by Mohammed that he was tortured by the CIA, although he said he was not under duress when he confessed to his role in the attacks.

In a chilling list of attacks — some of which were carried out, some not — Mohammed claimed responsibility for planning, financing and training others for plots ranging from the 1993 truck bombing of the World Trade Center to the attempt by would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with explosives hidden in his shoes.

He said he was involved in planning the 2002 bombing of a Kenya beach resort frequented by Israelis and the failed missile attack on an Israeli passenger jet after it took off from Mombasa, Kenya. He also said he was responsible for the bombing of a nightclub in Bali, Indonesia. In 2002, 202 were killed when two Bali nightclubs were bombed.

Other plots he said he was responsible for included planned attacks against the Sears Tower in Chicago, the Empire State Building and New York Stock Exchange, the Panama Canal and Big Ben and Heathrow Airport in London — none of which occurred.

He also said he was involved in planning assassination attempts against former Presidents Carter and Clinton, attacks on U.S. nuclear power plants and suspension bridges in New York, the destruction of American and Israeli embassies in Asia and Australia, attacks on American naval vessels and oil tankers around the world and an attempt to destroy an oil company he said was owned by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on Sumatra, Indonesia.

In all, Mohammed said he was responsible for planning 28 attacks. The comments were included in a 26-page transcript released by the Pentagon, which blacked out some of his remarks.

    continued....

Haven't we know about him for more than three years now? Does this somehow justify the hundreds of other uncharged men being mistreated?

Does this mean anything at all?

maybe there is some grey area i'm missing but when someone admits to doing something, chances are they are guilty.

there are 5 people in this thread who say he only admitted to being involved in 9/11 because the US tortured him

funny how the only presidents they plot to assassinate are the ones who tried to make peace and use diplomatic means to resolve mideast tensions. yet they act like im CRAZY when i say these guys love gunslingers like reagan and dubya cos it's good for their politics and recruitment. for all the neocons cry like little girls about appeasing, pussy dems, it's their john wayne diplomacy that serves al-quaeda best. having dubya in office was the best thing they coulda ever hoped for.

not at all and especially not under the conditions he was being held. that is why our constitution is so particular about due process and speedy trials. you hold somebody and abuse them for years and you can get them to say anything. most of the people here in america that have been exonerated from death row by dna evidence were convicted based on confessions that were coerced under conditions that feel like playground recess compared to what they did to this guy. shit, even the military has admitted that if you want real info, torture is not the way to get it. how long has he been in custody? and not a word. now all of a sudden, as someone pointed out, he's confessing to being the MASTERMIND of essentially every international terrorist attack of the last 15 years? im sorry, im not buying it. havent we been told for the last 6 years that OSAMA was the mastermind for these? how many masterminds can you have?

is he guilty? probably. was he involved? most likely. did he do everything they say he did? i rather doubt it. im thinking this is like vietnam era body counts... err on the high side to make us look like we're doing a better job than we actually are.

So now the US government should have no problem at all showing the public the film from the (at least 3) cameras of the big plane smashing into the pentagon. Among other things that they can now explain to the public. As we know that beatings, drugs and isolation always helps in getting somebody to tell you something you and your public really, really, really, want to hear. Glad that the whole story is somehow explained with this confession.
You've changed your place in this world!

no, 5 people, now 6, are skeptical of the true extent of KSM's level of involvement based on the fact the fucker was most likely tortured, which lead to him confessing to a ton of shit...

I heard he was involved in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa...at least he said so...

Right, which equals "fuck america. 9/11 was an inside job!!!! long live Osama!!!"

    Give me a break.

If you can't recognise the glaring problems with this supposed confession it's not as if anyone here can explain it to you. But that doesn't make them America hating al-Quida followers.

    ...

ie you think he's completely innocent and never even harmed a fly!

it's that failed, black & white, absolute, one or the other logic they love...you're with us or against us, the confession is 100% true or you think he deserves a nobel peace prize and has a shelter for abused and neglected animals
