You can begin by looking at 4 key events - The battle of Moscow, The battle of Stalingrad, the battle of Kursk, and the battle of Berlin. Each of these battles eclipsed D-day ten-fold. And in each of these battles more soldiers and civilians were killed than the U.S lost in the entire war.

Yeah but the key to the Russian/German battles is that both sides lost innumerable amounts of soldiers and it took its toll on both sides. The key to D-Day and the war in the Pacific is that the war took a definite swing towards the allies past that point. I think you are confusing numbers and sheer volume with outcomes.

You know what is so god damn sad? We can't vote for the president in USA. The president of your country will eventually decide how my future will be. I never voted Bush, but our soldiers are now in Afghanistan.

    Thats messed up...

well even us in the country don't really vote for the president with the electoral college.......or look at 2000 for that matter when the courts decided that stupid bush would be president

i do believe the russian winter had something to do with germany losing WW2... and by the way, being on then allied side of WW2 doesnt wash our hands of all the bad things done by our government
    Got Iraq out of Kuwait.
it is easy to ignore our cozy relationship with that brutal dictator for the decade leading up to that...
Spent hundreds of billions in humanitarian aid (tsunami relief, poverty, aids in Africa, Darfur, etc)
our foreign aid as a % of our GDP is very poor compared to most western countries
    Took Noriega out of power.
he was on the cia payroll for crying out loud... again, it is easy to overlook the cozy relationship for the years prior to "removing" him...
    Jazz.
dont forget rock and roll my friend! and hip hop :D
Allowed their citizens the freedom to uselessly post on message boards such as this without the threat of censorship. Go to Pakistan or China and make a thread about how useless the government and country are. See how long your posting career lasts.
the censorship being done in china is being done by american companies such as yahoo and google... and perhaps you have missed the whole data mining issue involving our telecom companies and the NSA
Allowed millions of immigrants into our country over time, which is what our country has been based upon since its inception.
listening to all the anti mexican immigrant hatred lately i would say we may be losing that... but hopefully not
But I mean, other that that what else? Clearly we've done nothing to help the world over time.
who ever said that? honest self reflection doesnt mean you just focus on the positives good friend...
We've made mistakes. So have every country in the world. When another country gets in the power seat like the US is in right now, let's see how they react.
not a believer in the "well they would be worse" mentality... we are the superpower currently. and we need to do much better
I don't condone all of our actions, and I am vehemently against the war in Iraq and our current administration,
    good!
but for the love of god...our country as a whole (especially over time) is not some big monster leaving a trail of destruction in its path.
some would argue that... native americans, south americans, central americans, mexicans, middle easterners, asians... ask them how they feel about this... i bet you get a different answer. take a trip to Vietnam or Chile and tell them all the good we have done

dont get me wrong, i love living here... but i think we have become an aggresive empire that uses war and the military to achieve goals for our elite interests... and that must stop. period.

dont ever be afraid to call out your government for its heinous acts, that is how this country was formed after all. dissent is how this was all created, and dissent is how we will be able to progress into the 21st century and beyond

for example... a husband that buys his wife flowers every day, yet beats her once a month is still a bad husband... you cannot ignore the negative actions... especially the negtaive actions of our own government

I am the first to speak out against our government. But this thread was about how completely vile the US is and always has been, and I take offense to that. I'm just merely pointing out we've done our fair share of good as well.

Yahoo and Google have to comply with China's laws. And considering I'm essentially a data warehouse & mining analyst, trust me that the NSA/Telecom issue is not lost on me.

Depends on what angle you take when you ask the questions I suppose. Like I said, we are not guilt free. I'm merely pointing out that this supposedly atrocious country is not entirely evil.

We make mistakes and then try to rectify them. We also had a relationship with the bin Laden family before we realized the direction they had taken. Let's not forget Brian Wilson taking in Charles Manson. It happens.

I have to say that Kenny Burrell, Ray Brown, Jimmy Smith, Grant Green, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Harris, Red Garland and Jack McDuff; certainly make a good argument. Since we are on the subject of Jazz.

But let's not forget my favorite kind of Jazz. Jazz with a nice helping of bluesy cream!!!!

  • I'm over this argument about who "won" WW2.

The fact is that it was won by all the allies, and any one country wouldn't have achieved it. Our history books down here in Australia naturally concentrate on what our country did because its our history, but that doesn't mean it was more important overall. Without the big contributions of the US, Britain and Russia and the contibutions of smaller countries and not forgetting things like the French Resistance it wouldn't have been achieved.

    And who wins wars anyway?

It's called inflated head pass the kool-aid syndrome.

It's bad enough to read about, but even more pathetic to witness in social environments.

Any serious historian knows that the battle of Moscow, and even more so, Stalingrad, were the turning points of the war. To say otherwise is just plain stupidity and ignorance. D-Day is almost an irrelevance compared with Stalingrad.

And Germany's defeat in the East had nothing to with the Russian counter-offensives and their encirclement of the entire German 6th army at Stalingrad, or their routing of the germans at Kursk, or their capturing of Berlin?
Seriously, it's kind of disgusting that so many people in the West are so completely ignorant of the achievements of the Ivans in World war 2. It's also kind of insulting to the 30 - 40 million Russians who died in the war, compared with 400,000 Americans.

I wasn't posting about why Japan never attacked the Soviet Union, but rather why the Soviets never supported their Allies in the theater of the Pacific leaving the UK and America to fight a two front war. And then that the Soviets jumped in two days after Hiroshima after the war was over in all practical terms for their own gains.

It just seems odd that while many of the Allies were fighting in campaigns all over the globe that the Soviets were pretty much only fighting for their own best interests until it became convenient for them to enter the Pacific theater. It seems odd that a country would totally respect a neutrality pact with a country that was at war with its Allies. If the Soviets never would have attacked Japan at the end I wouldn't even have brought it up.

The Soviets also cooperated with Germany in the invasion of Poland in 1939 and only after Germany invaded them in June 0f 1941 did they join the Allies.

I mean there was more to WW2 than just Europe.

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that they were busy destroying 3/4's of the German army on the Eastern front?
