there is still huge debate among historians about the reasons why the bomb was used. it really isn't as cut and dry as "show of force".
I'm not saying it's cut and dry but the same ends could have been achieved through different means, without having to risk over a millions troops to invade by land. Sure dropping two bombs is a lot easier than dropping over 1,000 as would have been needed to fire bomb two cities. Again I know there are people and historians out there that would agree and disagree with me, but I believe the driving factor in our decision to use the bomb was to show the Russians that we had the ability to develope and deploy a nuclear weapon.

Dresden stands out as one of the more horrific nights the German people were subjected too., though. It was barbarism, plain and simple. THe toughest bully showing the rest of the bullies how far he will go.
I know that but my point is that the fire bombing of Dresden or Tokyo killed more people and caused more damage than the bombing of Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
