To be fair, their main point about Trujillo's playing has always been that he reminds them of Cliff. So in a way, it's natural for them to try to write something like the early albums.
He reminds them of Cliff. Just like this album reminds me of old Metallica. I don't think it's good though. Cliff was a rare and special breed of bass players.

heard the single last night at a family get together. i wasn't really paying attention to it at first but when i figured out what it was i was amazed at how bad it was. Metallica hasn't made a good record since Load (i will stand by that record always) and based on this single, they haven't made a good one here. retire please.

Only problem with that is that Trujillo probably wasn't given ANY artistic room for his creative skills much like how Jason wasn't given much either. It's all James and Lars but I'll give this a listen on my stereo tonight when I get home.

I fucking love this song. I wasn't as impressed with Cyanide. In fact, the lyrics are pure shit... and the music is decent but not anything special. Which made me all the more surprised when I heard TDTNC. I was listening to it at work and I could not contain myself. This is the Metallica I loved as a kid.

how many songs did Jason cowrite for Metallica? three, four tops.
Blackened (pretty sure of this one)
one of the last two at the end of the Black Album
    Where The Wild Things Are

i think that's it...maybe something else on the Load/ReLoad records. for being in the band that long he shoulda had more songs on albums IMO.

RIGHT and he wanted to give more but many of his writings were shut down and another reason why he got the hell away from this band.

They aren't really in a no-win situation--unless you're talking in terms of popularity. They could've made a great original album. They are giving their fans too much input into their writing, which is terrible in my opinion. Of course the 80s fanboys cry for more thrash material. That's the Metallica I know and love best, but at least they were trying to mature and evolve their sound in the past 20 years. More than half of it is great. Metallica is living in the past now, making a shitty, nostalgiac (from what I've heard) album that will be praised for a bit then criticized.

They should've used this album to create fresh material in a new direction since this was Trujillo's first time recording with them.
I totally agree with this post. Very well put.

Am I the only one who thought (aside from the production) that St. Anger was actually okay (if you shaved two minutes off every song)?

There were some decent songs on St. Anger. I agree the songs were too long and St. Anger needed a different verse in there. On a whole i thought it sounded like a bunch of well produced demos. I can't wait for Death Magnetic and hopefully i'll get tickets for the O2 next month.

Well it's pumping through my Bose Series Quad sound right now I must say I'm being very critical here.....It's Solid more like damn good.

This is more of the Metallica the slow groovy, melodic, varied tempo driven thrash....old fucking School. The riffs between James and Kirk kind of remind of some Iron Maiden, this track passes the test going on the 10th time over. No catchy lyrics but it still works on repeated listening.

Lars kit sounds much better than the garbage can he played the last album. Time to crank it up a bit, let's if I can rattle the windows and make my neighbor frown and scowl like James. :)

Anyone know the name of the song that they play before Metallica come out on stage this year??

Its played before "Ecstasy of Gold" and sounds like Ac/Dc.

They definitely played it at Bonnaroo.

"It's A Long Way To The Top (If You want To Rock 'N Roll)" - AC/DC
    It's all about the music...

  • Try as I might, I can't get around that the lead singer is just not that good. Seems like he pretending to be a lead singer.

Back half of the song had good music.

St. Anger is definitely a favorate of mine. Yeah the production could've been better, but I think they were going for that garage, raw sound to begin with. Don't understand all the hate it gets. Dirty Window always gets me going.

TDTNC sounds very promising. It has a little bit of their first 4 albums in it... in a good way.
  • Lars is such a terrible drummer...he really drags this song down. He needs to hang it up.

The song itself is okay; it's certainly not bad but it is a bit underwhelming.
There's really no memorable riffs or melodies; and towards the end you realize that it's an obvious re-write of "One" for the Load era. I'm really surprised that more people haven't noticed that.

I don't know...I'm still going to get the album. Why stop now?

  • i didn't go through the whole thread, but is this being played on the radio now?
