Of course it's a more enjoyable listen than St Anger but really, it's a generic and lifeless retread of AJFA. Even the "thrash" section, while fast, sounds like James practising in the studio to a metronome.
The only absolutely positive thing I can say is that the leads are better than those on the Black album because there's no fucking wah on every note.
Everyone whinged that they wanted old Metallica back, that they stopped being good after the eightes and thats what they're getting.
I'm not saying you did by the way Jeremy, just stating what the feedback has been like from the fans regarding their material for the past umpteen years, now there is gonna be so many whinging that they sound dated.
Who'd be a rock star?:p
I really like that. And thats coming someone who would have to say that St Anger was the biggest piece of cack thats ever hit my eardrums. Sounds like a return to some sort of form to me. Still not sure about the drum sound though
"...though my problems are meaningless....that don't make them go away...."
I was quite a doubter as well and I really don't care for the band. I like what they've done here.
one problem - did they auto-tune Hetfields voice in some places? I think they did

Would just like to say that Masters of Reality's s/t is one of the best albums out there, not just on this list but out there in general, being really getting intop the music of Chris Goss lately and this album kicks some serious backside.:)
The new Metallica song is rocking, I'm digging it, not as much as the Noisettes album I'm listening to as I type, but on the strength of that one song the album is already better than St Anger.
Finally had a chance to listen...I'm really into it. Once all the instruments get going in the intro it has a similar feel to the original Unforgiven with vocals that are reminiscent of the Load era. And then then there are clear elements of Justice creeping in...leading to that Kill/Ride/Masters thrash section at the 5-minute mark, leading back into Justice era drums and a kick-ass Kirk solo!
All in all, it's sort of like a career retrospective, taking only the best parts from each era. Although, like others have said, Lars' kit sounds very odd (specifically at the very start - I guess it really does draw from ALL parts of their career, lol).
Wow...that sort of sucked. I'm not disappointed because I had ZERO expectations for the album but I wasn't impressed.
The first half sound like Nickelback.
Finally when they kick it in to full gear, the riffs sound dated and tired. Compared to other good metal bands out today..see MASTODON...this just sounds ameturish.
However, it was good to hear Kirk solo again, but the solo isn't even memorable or has a great hook.
Also, this was one of the worst drumming performances I've heard Lars do in a long time (his kit still sounds horrible!).
Lars Ulrich fucking sucks man. He drags the whole fucking thing down. The fact that his drums sound like shit doesn't help either.
However, I must say, that was pretty cool. Very reminiscent of the Kill 'Em All days. Glad to hear some nice solos, too. This song alone puts all of St. Anger to shame.
I pledge to you a government that will not only work well, but wisely, its ability to act tempered by prudence, and its willingness to do good, balanced by the knowledge that government is never more dangerous than when our desire to have it help us blinds us to its great power to harm us.

I like it. There may be some needless wankery in there but it is loads (pun not intended) better than St. Anger.
Sounds like some kind of weird cross betwee the Load albums and Justice.
Happy with it on first listen.
I totally agree i sumed it up for someone that it was like load and Justice with a tiny hint of Ride the Lightning...basically an overview of their whole band history. Between this and cyanide and what ive heard on mission metallica the album sounds great. Def better than the crap on rock radio today.
"Being undecided...it's dangerous. And I'll give you a perfect example: people with mullets, that's indecision."-EV
I still can't get over how amazingly shitty Lar's kit and drumming sounds.
it does sound a bit tinny. if you concentrate and listen to just that it really ruins it for you. but ive listened to this 3 or 4 times and just cant believe how bad ass the end is. they sound great. hopefully this tour is a beaut.

I listened to it once last night and heard it on the radio today and unfortunately i was underwhelmed.
do the people who like it listen to metal?
It seems pretty watered down and tame. the thrashy part has some okay jams but mostly uninspired. The first part of the song is tough to get through.
I heard another song they did on you tube called cyanide. I liked it a little better then this one.
I listen to Pantera, Machine Head, American Head Charge, Biohazard, Slayer, Sepultura, some Marilyn Manson, some Cradle of Filth, System of a Down, NIN, Down.
I have tried Mastodon and cant get into them dont see what the fuss is have listened to Remission twice now and the guys voice just annoys me, what I dont get with them is they get lumped into the stoner and southern scene.
When it kicks in, the song really rocks, but I don't know if I would consider a "back to our roots" for the simple fact of Lar's drumming. AJFA era Lars would have had the double-bass click going note for note when the thrash part kicks in. To me, when I think of early Metallica what sticks out is the tight as hell drums, and anyone who's seen them lately live (like any 'Roo veterans, unite!) can attest that the little dude could still easily pull off the old school style. He was beating them drums so hard he looked on the verge of a stroke the whole time, even during Nothing Else Matters.
To sum up, I like the direction of song writing, but the drums really hurt it.
It was OK. unfortunately, not being St. Anger does not make something good. this singing in the beginning was a low light and lars sounds like he is in marching band, but the rest sounded good.
this song is awesome...when i heard the level of the solo wizardry at the end i almost cried.FINALLY!!! i wish eddie would let mr.mccready shred like he used to.
James sounds like he's straining to hit the high notes. It sounded ok to me, but the media player quality kind of sucked. It reminded me of a demo recording.
"In certain trying circumstances...profanity furnishes a relief denied even to prayer." - Mark Twain
I agree. Lars' drums sound fucking awful. The rest of the song is decent. I would say that upon first listen it's the best stuff they've done in a long time.

That may be on the basis that it's singularly not Frantic.
YES!
a lot better than anything from St Anger

Easily one of the worst drumming I've ever heard in a song. Have you also seen his kit lately? no wonder it sounds like shit, it looks like shit.

The song is really good, way better than St. Anger crap.
james doesn't have the voice anymore, it's sort of sad.
they played bleeding me in 98 here in van, couldnt believe it! love that song.
I don't think he ever did.
