In 1991-92 Cornell was perhaps the best singer in rock history. 93-96 he was great, Superunknown being one of the best vocal performances on any album by anyone EVER (put temple of the dog on this list too).
Cornell is better now than he's been since his solo tour (which he was QUITE good on). But I don't think anyone can touch his Soundgarden days.
I don't doubt he is one of the best rock singers ever, I just don't equate great singing with high pitched heavy metal wailing (even though most of the time it was really cool). I know most people on this board disagree with that.
As for Hunger Strike, yeah, SB wasn't that good, he sang the verse real well, better than on the TOTD record, but the high part... ughhh. I heard some Audioslave versions that were much much much better. I think it'd go over really well-- if it... ever... went... over.0 -

That dude was fucking superhuman.
Yes. Many, many times. And I agree, he was great on those albums, but to say the best ever... ? Gimme a break.
Its funny though that because I disagree you assume I haven't heard it...you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.0 -

Pearl Jam and toast wrote:Well I was just using a turn of phrase.. that is to say.. "Cmon if you've heard that album you gotta agree with what I'm saying because his performance is THAT good".
Well, as long as you love his voice, that's what counts.you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane.0 -

Sound alright. Mercury is definitly the best, even though I am by no means a Queen fan.« One man's glory is another man's hell.

Agreed.
Just give a listen to Smokestack Lightning, Jesus Christ Pose, or Say Hello to Heaven or anything from that era..then get back to me and try to tell me he was no good then, heh
Although I still feel he has it in him to perform superbly today."Everyone wants to be the sun that lights up your life, but I'd rather be your moon so I can shine on you during your darkest hour when your sun's not around."0 -

Fixed it for ya there.
Oh, and I'll match 1988-1992 era Chris Cornell against anyone else's voice in the history of rock. You dispute? Sit down, and actually listen to Hands All Over or Entering or Nothing To Say, or Beyond The Wheel. And then come back on here and tell me if anyone else could do it quite like that.
I think you'll astonish yourself.
Love,
