    Those were the days.....I first went to the Starwood when I was 14 to see the Dickies. I was too chicken to go to hardcore shows at the Olympic Auditorium.

    The one time we ventured to see FEAR at the Stardust Ballroom, we got roughed-up by the L.A.D.S......my buddy had mouthed-off to a member who also happened to be a golden-gloves boxer.

    Remember the L.A. Street Scene? That was a great music event until the thugs spoiled it!

    Don't I know it :( If I could have witnessed ANY musical occurence ever it would be the DC hardcore punk scene, the LA one being second choice :D

    the only hardcore show i went to was agent orange in oc.....can't remember where though....i was just a shade too young to get out to shows and then like you said, the thugs took over and i had no interest in going

    There are some great movies that document early 80s punk:

    The Decline of Western Civilization (X, Black Flag, Germs and other L.A. bands)

    Suburbia ( story about some runaway punks in L.A., and has performances from a club called "Godzillas")...Flea is one of the stars of the movie...I remember when they filmed parts of it at a shop around the corner from my house.

    Urgh!, a Music War (shot at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1980....features punk/new wave bands from everywhere, not just L.A.!)

    Yeah I've seen Decline of Western Civilisation. Good film. John Doe from X said though that, even though his band were featured, most of the bands that were really important weren't, Penelope Spheeris was more interested in showing the kind of sleazy side of thing, Darby Crash and his addictions etc than covering bands like The Weirdos.

    I agree...seems like she put a lot of focus on the lifestyle, and not just the music.

    How could anyone not like Bad Brains? :eek: Sheer, pure, primal energy. They are the most "punk" band ever :) They did have some slightly dodgy homophobic views due to their rastafarianism though :o Unless you meant the original band in the thread and not the ones I posted...?

    Stiff Little Fingers are great. Alternative Ulster has some of my favourite lyrics ever.

    As for Husker Du, they were definitely punk to start with, even if they became a pop band, and their version of Eight Miles High is the very definition anyway, taking a hippie statement, chewing it up and screaming it back out at them :p

    It's a bit of a passion of mine. One day a few years back I bought Minor Threat's Complete Discography on a whim because something about the cover shot just arrested me. That compilation lit a fucking explosion in my heart :D

    HR does indeed seem like quite an individual. I've read some recent interviews with him and either he's acting it or he genuinely is losing his mind.
