I say Sex Pistols, I know everyone else is waaaaay too cool to mention them. But, it is a simple truth. They were an act. A good act but an act. All of the first wave of English bands were just posers.
I do agree on The Clash though, just in case you think I'm defending them"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 -

The Clash --- UK
Dead Kennedys --- US
Operation Ivy/Rancid ---- Todaythe Minions0 -
I will say The Minutemen. Not only were they a punk band, but their punk attitude and way of thinking wasn't just an act for the stage. They believed in what they were doing.0

I'm not a scholar of punk jjust knows what I like. And the Clash to me are, well they were trying to be something, they had an agenda....and to be honest, apart from a handful of songs they pretty much missed all their targets for me.
The Pistols were a proper band, never mind what Maclaren has 'fabricated' over the years from his imagination.I came, I saw, I concurred.....0 -

Hey now! I wasn't too cool to mention themI love the Sex Pistols.
I do have to admit that I think my punk knowledge is a little amateur for this thread.0 -

I dunno, they're like Billy Corgan for me. Great tunes, just hate them as a band. It shouldn't affect the music but it does for me. Plus I mean, watching the fat gits playing that stuff now is so pathetic and it just taints what I used to think was a brilliant rock album.
Still, Bollocks is better than London Calling."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 -

its funny how one claims The Clash were overrated...then offer The Sex Pistols as the alternative.0 -

there is a great documentary about the Minutemen but I cant think of the name now.....but it involves Mike Watt driving around San Pedro in his van and telling the camera about places they played when they first started...its a great movie for any fan0 -

That's a great documentary. I have watched it a dozen times. If you get the DVD, there is a second disc that has two of their live shows.0 -

They were a killer pop band but the whole "fuck the establishment" thing just doesn't hold up with how tailored and contrived it was, in a different way to The Clash but still kind of... fake. I mean, Lydon was a fan of Can and Captain Beefheart and Van Der Graaf Generator and stuff like that but he went around wearing "I hate Pink Floyd" t-shirts as if his band were saving rock from prog. I've got nothing against commercialism but when it's pretending to be something else...

I totally agree. Nevermind the Bollocks was the first punk album I listened to as a kid, and it threw me off because I thought all punk would sound like that. Nevermind the Bollocks pretty much was recorded as professionally as a record could be during that era. I remember getting a Misfits album after that and being turned off at first because it sounded like it was recorded in a shoebox in comparison to Nevermind the Bollocks.(Side-note, I grew to love the Misfits as I became older, regardless of poor recording equipment)0 -
