IMHO, the stooges, the Ramones and the NY Dolls were just offshoots of 70's rock.

I went and checked out Strung Out's website...they sound like every other band that calls themselves "punk" today.

    not impressive....TO ME

Im partial to the bands I grew up listening to

Black Flag(and I love them even more now that I became friends with Greg Ginn)
    JFA
    Dead Kennedys
    Circle Jerks
    DRI

    Social Distortion.........
Light green to green, dark green, brown..
    Every life is falling down
Brown to black, it's coming back

or Face to Face... for me it's a tossup
Minneapolis 98, Chicago 00, San Fransisco 00, Fargo 03, Thunder Bay 05, St Paul 06 (night 2), Chicago 08 (EV) both nights

    Don't it make you smile?

saying the ramones were an offshoot of 70's rock is as assinine as saying PJ was an offshoot of seattle grunge. the ramones were pioneers of US punk .... how can they be an offshoot.

All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all

I don't agree however songs like Mind of My Own and Ultimate Devotion are some of the best songs punk has to offer. Saw them live a few months back...

Ok holy shit, I just listened to Strung Out. It's not punk for a start. It's not good either...

    The Ramones

Stiff Little Fingers are a fave of mine but certainly not the best of all-time.

Strung Out is definitely far from being the Greatest Punk Rock Band of All Time...

I think the guys from The Clash, Social Distortion, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Propagandhi, The Melvins and dozens of other bands would have something to say about that.

And above all that, the best punk rock ever will not be found in a CD store, it will be found in a dingy bar, being played by a group of people you've never heard of and most likely will never be heard of by anyone.
Hello, I love you. Won't you tell me your name?
  • Having conducted extensive research (I spent at least three minutes on youtube), I've come to the inevitable conclusion that Fountains of Wayne are a better punk band than Strung Out.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

Those were the days.....I first went to the Starwood when I was 14 to see the Dickies. I was too chicken to go to hardcore shows at the Olympic Auditorium.

The one time we ventured to see FEAR at the Stardust Ballroom, we got roughed-up by the L.A.D.S......my buddy had mouthed-off to a member who also happened to be a golden-gloves boxer.

Remember the L.A. Street Scene? That was a great music event until the thugs spoiled it!

Don't I know it :( If I could have witnessed ANY musical occurence ever it would be the DC hardcore punk scene, the LA one being second choice :D

There are some great movies that document early 80s punk:

The Decline of Western Civilization (X, Black Flag, Germs and other L.A. bands)

Suburbia ( story about some runaway punks in L.A., and has performances from a club called "Godzillas")...Flea is one of the stars of the movie...I remember when they filmed parts of it at a shop around the corner from my house.

Urgh!, a Music War (shot at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1980....features punk/new wave bands from everywhere, not just L.A.!)
