LANOIS: 'ONE OF THE GREAT, INNOVATIVE U2 RECORDS'
June 06, 2008
posted by: m2
Daniel Lanois showed up on Dave Fanning's RTE Radio show Wednesday
night, and Fanning made sure to slip in a couple questions about the
U2 album progress. I'll put Lanois' comments in quotes, and paraphrase
Fanning's questions in italics:
"We're on the home stretch. We're gonna deliver in about three weeks
or a month, and then hopefully they'll have that record out in the
fall. It's going great."
Are you telling me that all the tracks are done, more or less?
"Yeah, yeah, yeah - it's all done and we're just finishing the vocals.
Bono's in great form, singing fantastic. Everybody's in high spirits."
Is it anything like the previous stuff?
"I think we can safely say it's one of the great, innovative records
from U2."
You can listen online here.

ALBUM, TOUR NEWS FROM DUBLIN
June 08, 2008
posted by: m2
We're getting several emails tonight from U2.com regulars telling us
about various threads in the Zootopia forums. Seems there's a lot of
activity lately outside Hanover Quay, and fans are asking questions
and getting information like this:
* The band has one week of work left on the album.
* Brian Eno told fans about a new song called 'Moment of Surrender'
and said it's "the best thing" he's recorded with U2.
* Sam O'Sullivan told fans the band is on a tight schedule because the
album has to be ready for October.
* Tour will start in March and will visit North America and Europe.
(no idea on source)
So there you have it. Thx to our Zootopia friends (C, A, etc.) for
sharing the news so we can share with our readers. For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside

No freebies to come with the new U2 release
09 June 2008
Coldplay and Radiohead have been distributing their music in new ways
by giving fans their music for free, but do not expect the same from
rock giants U2.
Their new album is due out this year and U2's manager Paul McGuinness
explained to 6 Music why they would not follow in Radiohead's footsteps.
He said: "There will be events around the release of the album but for
U2 physical sales are still an enormous part of our business and we
still sell a lot of actual CDs.
"We will obviously work with whatever technology is available to make
the release of the new record as interesting as possible."
Mc Guinness feels Radiohead's free giveaway and pay-what-you-like
scheme was not a very business-savvy move.
Speaking to 6 Music, he said: "We should all be aware that Radiohead's
honesty box release of their album to some extent backfired."
Continuing: "Even though it was available on their own website for no
money at all, if that was what you preferred to pay - 60 to 70 per
cent of the people who downloaded the record stole it anyway even
though it was available for free."
With regards to an actual release date McGuinness revealed they are
hoping to put the record out in Autumn 2008.
"The exact date is not clear yet but I would think towards the end of
October," McGuinness said.

Hot Press Magazine
Paul McGuinness reveals U2 release date
U2 manager Paul McGuinness has been dropping hints about the release of the new U2 album, which is provisionally planned for October.
Paul McGuinness has told the BBC that the release date for the new U2 album is “not clear yet but I would think towards the end of October. We will obviously work with whatever technology is available to make the release as interesting as possible. But for U2, physical sales are still an enormous part of our business and we still sell a lot of actual CDs.”
Asked what he thought of the ‘pay what you like’ online release Radiohead gave In Rainbows, McGuinness profered that it “to some extent backfired. 60 to 70% of the people who downloaded the record stole it anyway, even though it was available for free.”

LONDON: Irish rockers U2 are selling a painting by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat valued at up to 6 million pounds (US$12 million; €7.7 million), Sotheby's auction house said Thursday.
Sotheby's said "Untitled (Pecho/Oreja)" will go under the hammer in London on July 1 and is expected to fetch between 4 million pounds and 6 million pounds (US$7.8 million and US$12 million; €5 million and €7.5 million).
It was bought by members of U2 in 1989 after being spotted by bass player Adam Clayton in a New York gallery and has hung in their Dublin studio ever since.
Basquiat was one of the most prominent American artists of the 1980s, lauded for his strong use of color and the social commentary in his work. He died of a heroin overdose in 1988, aged 27.
"Untitled (Pecho/Oreja)," painted when the artist was 22, combines a stylized human head, reminiscent of a ritual mask, covered in marks and doodles.
In May 2007 a Basquiat painting sold for US$14.6 million in New York, a record for the artist.

something designed by ... BONO!", your chance is coming soon.
@U2 reader Claus V. points us to news from the Danish company Vipp,
which recently announced that Bono will design a new pedal bin (trash
can/waste basket) to be auctioned off for charity on September 18th in
New York. Money raised will help children in need in NYC and
Chernobyl. Use the link for more info...

THE ALBUM IS FINISHED!
July 05, 2008
posted by: m2
U2's new public relations director, Daniel Lanois, told Le Journal de
Montreal last week that the band has finished recording the new album,
and all that's left is to "finish up some mixes." You can read the
interview en Francais, or rely on this translation from our good
friend Beth:
"It's going to be different in several ways, but I think it's similar
from one point of view, namely that it's going to push the known
limits in the sound arena, the way Achtung Baby did in the past.
"Currently we're working within clearly defined creative periods. We
meet somewhere and we work for two weeks on everything we can. Then we
all go do whatever for three weeks, before getting together again. It
requires some administration, but for the creative process it's as if
everything were fresh every time we reunite."

Bono and crew dine out after finally finishing album
By Barry Egan
Sunday July 06 2008
BONO hosted a swish party last weekend in Town Bar & Grill. Since he
is in the restaurant every other Friday night with the Simon Carmody
Community (Guggi, Gavin et al) I can only assume he subscribes to the
faithful party ideology. But I digress. All the other members of U2
were also present. Well, they would, wouldn't they? The soiree was to
celebrate the completion of their long-awaited new album.
Also in attendance those well-known U2 fans Mary Harney and her
husband Brian Geoghegan as well as Ian Dempsey, Mark Kershaw and one
of the Irish Models in party mode.

if this is true, thank god. i love u2 and dont think they have a bad album in them, but the last one was not nearly experimental enough for my tastes....my favorite U2 moments have been the strangest, the ones most people dont like very much, like Zooropa.I've faced it, a life wasted, and I'm never going back again.

HOW ABOUT A 6-CD BOX SET?

All of a sudden, it's like Christmas in July. Allegra points us to
this 6-CD Amazon.com exclusive box set, which contains all three
upcoming re-issues (Boy, October, and War), plus, mysteriously, "room
for a fourth" according to the product description. It's all packaged
in a "hardbound shell", and includes a replica poster (which, sadly,
will be rendered useless by being folded to fit into the CD-sized
packaging). It's available in two weeks, says Amazon.com. And I'm not
seeing it on Amazon UK or Amazon Canada.

U2's upcoming DVD release of U2 Live at Red Rocks - Under A Blood Red
Sky has just been classified on the British Board of Film
Classification web site. Have a look at the entry.
http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classified.nsf/ClassifiedWorks/20FC86CF102F3D1E8025747F0050BC0D
Didya notice the running time on that DVD release? 171 minutes, 12
seconds! Huzzah!
The entry shows a Red Rocks concert at 1 hour, 21 minutes, and then
the concert again with commentary, and then an extra "featurette." The
running time on my Red Rocks VHS comes in at a paltry 55 minutes, so
does this mean we're getting the complete, unedited concert? How great
would that be?
We're guessing this is the deluxe DVD release listed on Amazon, as
opposed to the standard DVD release.

REMASTERED ALBUM NEWS ROUNDUP
July 21, 2008
posted by: m2
Lots of little bits of news to pass along about the remasters, so
let's do it all in one post, shall we?
* Sean, a reader in England, tells us that "U2 Live in Paris" audio is
available on the UK iTunes Music Store, and was added at the same time
as the three new, remastered albums. It's the 18-song set that
appeared as the bonus DVD on the deluxe Joshua Tree box. Look for it
on your iTunes now if interested, or check tomorrow if you're in North
America.
* Peter L. tells us that "Angels Too Tied To The Ground" isn't listed
on the remastered War CD sleeve, suggesting it was a last-minute
addition to the bonus CD. He also tells us the bonus CD tracklisting
is messed up.
* Speaking of that, the deluxe Boy sleeve has a problem with its
tracklist, too. Allegra told us about it, and I wrote about it (with
photo) on our blog.
