Most Overrated Song Ever??

I can't reasonably name any song that at one point I actually liked but feel that it has been overplayed. Sure, Smells like teen spirit, Born to Run, Stairway to Heaven, Freebird etc. are all epic songs from their day and still stand the test of time. but I'm not sure that means they are overrated maybe overplayed but not overrated so I'll call out a big song that I just never got into.
Paradice by the Dashboard Light---Meatloaf
I never got this song and why it was so popular.the Minions0 -

The only good part is the "London is drowning and I, I live by the river" bit. That a truly great song like Train In Vain wasn't even listed on the back of the original album and London Calling gets to be the title track is mindblowing to me
Let me guess ... you weren't around in the late 70s were you?
I think songs like this ... you have to understand the climate they were released in ... why they meant so much to the people of that time.
I agree, London Calling isn't the greatest song the Clash ever did ... but, I don't tihnk it's the most overrated song ever ... not even close."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91
"I don't believe in damn curses. Wake up the damn Bambino and have me face him. Maybe I'll drill him in the ass." --- Pedro Martinez0 -
Born to run - Springsteen
Bohemian fuckin' rhapsoddy - Queen
Bat out of Hell - Meathead (possibly the most nauseating song ever)
I could go on!0 -
Hey Jude - Beatles
I'm a HUGE, HUGE Beatles fan but I truly despise this song....'The more I studied religions the more I am convinced that man never worshipped anything but himself.' - Sir Richard Francis Burton0 -

Love that song, surprised no one has mentioned a RUSH song so far.

Big fucking deal. Music that is relevant only to a single period of time and only to a particular group of people and social atmosphere doesn't really tick the boxes of why I love music. Great music transcends those things. Jesus, some of the most important music in my life is stuff that those who WERE there would normally say "you had to be there". 80s hardcore punk is music for Reagan's youth. I'm a near 20 year-old guy from Britain. Why does it speak to me? I'm not sure, it just does. It's timeless. London Calling is not, to me.jimed14 wrote:Let me guess ... you weren't around in the late 70s were you?
I'll agree with you that London Calling is not the most overrated song ever, that award goes to Hey Jude, but it puzzles me why it is so highly praised by seemingly everyone so I felt like agreeing with the peson who mentioned it first. It wouldn't even make my top 5 on the album."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 -
I think London's Calling is ok, I do think the Clash are the most over rated band ever though.
song wise, I vote...Hotel CaliforniaI came, I saw, I concurred.....0 -

Sorry, nothing irritates me more than the "you just don't understand it" attitude when it comes to music. Tell me I'm wrong and a fucking idiot if you like, just don't patronise mejimed14 wrote:whoa ... ease up man.

I want to say that it's not possible to determine the most overrated song ever, but "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has to be up there.
I just heard a bit of it yesterday and was struck by the fact that I don't find that song to be the least bit appealing. I'd rather listen to a cheesy pop song than much of anything Nirvana produced. I used to think I was at least a casual fan, but I'm coming to the conclusion that I was just fooling myself.0 -

s'all good ... my only point is that it's not nearly the most over rated song of all time ... perhaps for you, living in the UK, you think indeed, it's very over rated ... but, of all time? that's was my only issue."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

if I had to pick an over rated Metallica song, it would be Nothing Else Matters ...
Fade to Black was a *MUCH* better "ballad" like song ..."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91

Satisfaction - Rolling Stones
This one is on top every "greatest song ever" list and it's pretty crap.“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”0 -
Ooooh! Overrated and nasty. We need a puke smiley.goldrush wrote:November fckn Rain - Guns n' Roses0 -
weekapaug19 wrote:how can people say this??? it changed music. an overrated song is that crap on the radio today, where the artist is popular for 2 months with some crappy song (i.e. that i kissed a girl song) and in 3 months, that song will never be heard of again
teen spirit is one of the greatest songs ever, because it was the leader in a whole new wave of music, which PJ was a part of
I agree that it changed music. No arguement from me there. I think if you take that aspect away and just look at the song itself, its really not that great of a song. Especially to have the impact that it did. Every Greatest Song of the 90s list I have ever seen has it as #1. In my opinion, its not the greatest song that came out of the 90s. Hell, it's not even Nirvana's greatest song.0
