    My votes are

"Old Time Rock & Roll" by Bob Seger and

"Rock & Roll" by Led Zeppelin

Whenever I hear a band covering those songs and when I see people getting happy and running to the dance floor, I just want to vomit all over the place.
  • My vote goes to Bruce Springsteens' Born to Run.

I'm shocked and stunned! That song is the biggest, most uplifting anthem ever recorded!
  • Imagine by John Lennon, easily.
    +1

London Calling by the Clash is another one. Take that song at face value and it's really not that good.
Agreed. One of the most mediocre songs on a frighteningly mediocre record.

The only good part is the "London is drowning and I, I live by the river" bit. That a truly great song like Train In Vain wasn't even listed on the back of the original album and London Calling gets to be the title track is mindblowing to me :D
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
  • My first thought was Smells Like Teen Spirit. it's a piece of crap.

how can people say this??? it changed music. an overrated song is that crap on the radio today, where the artist is popular for 2 months with some crappy song (i.e. that i kissed a girl song) and in 3 months, that song will never be heard of again

teen spirit is one of the greatest songs ever, because it was the leader in a whole new wave of music, which PJ was a part of
  • I can't reasonably name any song that at one point I actually liked but feel that it has been overplayed. Sure, Smells like teen spirit, Born to Run, Stairway to Heaven, Freebird etc. are all epic songs from their day and still stand the test of time. but I'm not sure that means they are overrated maybe overplayed but not overrated so I'll call out a big song that I just never got into.

    Paradice by the Dashboard Light---Meatloaf

I never got this song and why it was so popular.

Let me guess ... you weren't around in the late 70s were you?

I think songs like this ... you have to understand the climate they were released in ... why they meant so much to the people of that time.

I agree, London Calling isn't the greatest song the Clash ever did ... but, I don't tihnk it's the most overrated song ever ... not even close.

    Born to run - Springsteen
    Bohemian fuckin' rhapsoddy - Queen
Bat out of Hell - Meathead (possibly the most nauseating song ever)

    I could go on!
  • Hey Jude - Beatles

I'm a HUGE, HUGE Beatles fan but I truly despise this song....

Big fucking deal. Music that is relevant only to a single period of time and only to a particular group of people and social atmosphere doesn't really tick the boxes of why I love music. Great music transcends those things. Jesus, some of the most important music in my life is stuff that those who WERE there would normally say "you had to be there". 80s hardcore punk is music for Reagan's youth. I'm a near 20 year-old guy from Britain. Why does it speak to me? I'm not sure, it just does. It's timeless. London Calling is not, to me.

I'll agree with you that London Calling is not the most overrated song ever, that award goes to Hey Jude, but it puzzles me why it is so highly praised by seemingly everyone so I felt like agreeing with the peson who mentioned it first. It wouldn't even make my top 5 on the album.

Sorry, nothing irritates me more than the "you just don't understand it" attitude when it comes to music. Tell me I'm wrong and a fucking idiot if you like, just don't patronise me :)

Smells Like Teen Spirit. I really think Nirvana was a great band but I don't think this is one of their better songs.

I want to say that it's not possible to determine the most overrated song ever, but "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has to be up there.

I just heard a bit of it yesterday and was struck by the fact that I don't find that song to be the least bit appealing. I'd rather listen to a cheesy pop song than much of anything Nirvana produced. I used to think I was at least a casual fan, but I'm coming to the conclusion that I was just fooling myself.

s'all good ... my only point is that it's not nearly the most over rated song of all time ... perhaps for you, living in the UK, you think indeed, it's very over rated ... but, of all time? that's was my only issue.

Fade to Black was a *MUCH* better "ballad" like song ...

  • Satisfaction - Rolling Stones

This one is on top every "greatest song ever" list and it's pretty crap.

I agree that it changed music. No arguement from me there. I think if you take that aspect away and just look at the song itself, its really not that great of a song. Especially to have the impact that it did. Every Greatest Song of the 90s list I have ever seen has it as #1. In my opinion, its not the greatest song that came out of the 90s. Hell, it's not even Nirvana's greatest song.
