Just heard the new Metallica single, "The Day That Never Comes" on
http://www.metallica.com

*head explodes*

OMG...I was not expecting this! At nearly 8 minutes long, this is a monster. Starts out slow and melodic, ala Welcome Home Sanitarium. Nothing Else Matters, etc.
Then shifts into a thrashy breakdown, reminiscent of Kill em All, Ride the Lightning, followed by some monstrous duel riffing between Kirk and James. Guitar solos are back!!! Kirk shreds fantasically near the end. I need to collect my thoughts and listen to this a few more times.

I think the "Tallica boys are back....

damn that sounds good, too bad i'm waiting for the cd to actually come out before i listen to any of the songs (i made a pact with my brother). I have heard the Iron Maiden cover they just did recently and I liked it.

I was impressed until it got close to the 5 minute mark............and then my mind was blown  If this song is anything to go by then the critics are spot on with their statement that this album is the missing link between "And Justice For All......" and "Black".
    Welcome back Metallica!!!
  • Wow...that sort of sucked. I'm not disappointed because I had ZERO expectations for the album but I wasn't impressed.

The first half sound like Nickelback.

Finally when they kick it in to full gear, the riffs sound dated and tired. Compared to other good metal bands out today..see MASTODON...this just sounds ameturish.

However, it was good to hear Kirk solo again, but the solo isn't even memorable or has a great hook.

Also, this was one of the worst drumming performances I've heard Lars do in a long time (his kit still sounds horrible!).

  • Hopefully it was just my computer speakers(worst way to listen to music), but that sounded awful...jesus, just plain awful.

The first 4 minutes sounded like something off the Load or Reload albums. And then it got SO MUCH BETTER. The second half is killer.

Nice way to introduce the new album to the world. There is much to look forward to. Strong work.

  • I ddn't hear anything reminiscent of St. Anger, which is a very good thing, IMO.

I will admit to the drums still sounding a bit funny.

    Basically my thoughts.

Of course it's a more enjoyable listen than St Anger but really, it's a generic and lifeless retread of AJFA. Even the "thrash" section, while fast, sounds like James practising in the studio to a metronome.

The only absolutely positive thing I can say is that the leads are better than those on the Black album because there's no fucking wah on every note.

Absolutley amazing live band. What a show!!
It was my 3rd time seeing them.

The only new song they played was "Cyanide".
Seems cool but could do with another listen.

Im liking the new single. Just listened to it.
    Back to there best.

Anyone know if they'll be releasing different formats of the new album

Metallica is definitely in a no-win situation. They try something different, everyone writes them off for doing so. They go back to their roots, which everyone was begging them to do, and people call their sound old and dated. I find this reaction fascinating.

I agree, and it is unfair, but that's the inevitable position that a spent band is going to find themselves in. They haven't made a good album for 17 years. They don't owe us anything and we don't owe them anything. Call it quits.

  • This song is not good.

The riffs are boring, the lyrics are boring, the vocals are half-assed, and there are no hooks.

the solo is the only decent part. and even that isn't all that good.
